Currently, there are around billion dollars worth of repairs needed in America's National Parks. The Great American Outdoors Act sends around billion over the next five years to improve maintenance. PROJECTS EXPECTEDIn Colorado, it means Rocky Mountain National Park will get improved sewage systems; in Montana, Glacier National Park will upgrade their camp grounds; in Arizona, the Grand Canyon will get drinking water pipelines fixed; in the Everglades of Florida, storm-damaged buildings can be repaired; and at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, 100-year-old trail heads will be updated with better parking lots and easier entrances. LAND AND WATER CONSERVATION FUNDApart from improving the maintenance in America's National Parks, the legislation also, for the first, permanently funds the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Starbucks is exchanging its iconic green straws for recyclable strawless lids.The newer tops were modeled after the lids the coffee company has used on their hot drinks.They will have a drinking spout and contain about 9% "less plastic than the flat lid and straw historically used for iced beverages."“We developed and trialed several prototypes to arrive at this milestone,” said Andy Corlett, director of global packaging solutions and innovations, in a press release. “A recyclable, strawless lid becoming the standard for iced drinks is one small way we can give more than we take from the planet. SPRING VALLEY (CNS) - A 48-year-old man who went missing during an outing near Sweetwater Reservoir two weeks ago has been found dead, authorities reported Friday.A search-and-rescue team came across the body of Edward Leonard in a remote spot near the Spring Valley-area manmade lake on Thursday morning, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Department.There was no immediate evidence of criminal involvement in Leonard's death, authorities said.Leonard had been missing since July 2, when a friend dropped him off at the reservoir to go fishing, officials said. (KGTV) - The Solana Beach City Council is the latest local government body to take up the gun control debate in the wake of recent mass shootings.On Wednesday night, the council passed Resolution 2018-036, which calls upon California Congressmen and women to pass gun safety regulations.Included in the resolution is official opposition to the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017, currently making its way through Congress.That bill would force states to honor Concealed Carry Permits from other states, regardless of how strict or relaxed each state's regulations are.Other parts of the Solana Beach resolution call for:- Raising the minimum age to buy a gun to 21- Banning the sale of military-style semiautomatic and automatic weapons- Banning the sale of high capacity magazines that hold more than 10 cartridges- Universal background checks- Mandatory safety training before buying a gun- A 10-day waiting period before taking possession of a gunYou can read the full text of the resolution here.The resolution makes Solana Beach the second city council in San Diego County to take up the issue.
