SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — PETA is taking aim at SeaWorld once again, this time hoping to put a stop to the parks' dolphin shows.Officials held a press conference Wednesday to call out the park for what they called "dangerous," "circus-style" dolphins shows. The group argues trainers use dolphins "as surfboards" and have caused "open wounds and extensive scarring" on the animals."SeaWorld ceded to public pressure and said that it would phase out its circus-style orca shows, but dozens of other dolphins are still packed into shallow tanks, forcibly bred, and used as surfboards and launch pads in its shows," Heather Rally, a PETA Foundation veterinarian, said. "PETA is calling on SeaWorld to end these demeaning tricks and stop standing on dolphins' backs and faces."Rally, "Blackfish" director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, and behavioral biologist Dr. Toni Frohoff presented a report Wednesday in regards to their observations at the parks. The three argued that the shows, which are performed at all three of SeaWorld's parks, risk damage to dolphins' lower jaws. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Monday identified the suspect who reportedly threatened officers with a knife before being shot in the Midway District last week. According to police, Ryan Bowers, 23, was shot by Officer Matthew Steinbach after raising a knife toward officers. Police responded to the 3100 block of Cauby Street just before 10 p.m. January 3 after a caller said Bowers cut his own throat with a knife before it was taken away. According to police, that’s when Bowers pulled a knife out of his jacket and raised it toward officers. The officers drew their weapons while telling Bowers to back up, which he refused to do. “Fearing for his safety, one officer fired his weapon at the male striking him at least once,” police said. Officers administered medical aid to Bowers until paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. 1036

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police arrested a suspect following an early-morning shooting in the Gaslamp Quarter that left one man dead. The shooting was reported at around 2 a.m. Monday on Market Street at 5th Avenue, according to San Diego police.According to several witnesses, the shooting erupted following an argument outside of a venue between two groups of people. Witnesses told 10News the victim swung a folding sign at a group of men when one person in the group opened fire.The 33-year-old victim suffered at least one gunshot wound, and police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.RELATED: Friends remember father killed in Gaslamp shooting After the gunfire, witnesses said two men got into a cab and left the scene. However, police stopped the cab a short distance away and detained the men for questioning.Jonathan Hernandez, 23, was arrested after the shooting and booked into jail for murder. Shaun Spearman, a friend of the victim, told 10News that his friend “just had a heart of gold, always took care of people.”Spearman continued, “He’s the one that deescalates things … I’ve seen him, multiple times, have to bring things down. He’s a calming guy, he knows how to talk to people … It doesn't make sense yet. I'm just trying to make sense of it.”The victim has not been officially identified.Market Street, between 4th and 5th avenues, was closed for several hours due to the investigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for the driver who struck a pedestrian with his vehicle before driving away in Hillcrest early Sunday morning. According to police, a 30-year-old man was crossing the street on the 1300 block of University when he was hit. Following the crash, the sedan fled the scene. The victim was taken to the hospital with a skull fracture and brain bleed. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 468
