UNITED NATIONS, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Representatives from UN Security Council members and other countries on Wednesday sent their deep condolences to the Chinese government and people for a strong earthquake that hit the northwestern part of the country and killed at least 589 people.The diplomats from nearly 40 countries and the European Union offered their condolences to China when they were taking the floor at an open Council debate on the situation in the Middle East, which kicked off here Wednesday morning. The representatives were from the only countries which inscribed to speak at the open debate.Representatives from Austria, Bosnia, Brazil, Britain, France, Gabon, Japan, Lebanon, Nigeria, Russia and the United States offered their condolences to the Chinese delegation for the 7.1-magnitude earthquake, which struck northwest China's Qinghai Province early Wednesday.Condolences were also from such countries as Afghanistan, Argentina, Botswana, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, Kenya, Kuwait, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tunisia and Venezuela.Earlier, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and president of the UN General Assembly Ali Treki also sent their deep condolences to China over the strong earthquake.At least 589 people have reportedly died and 10,000 others were injured in the wake of the deadly earthquake, local authorities said.
BEIJING, May 21 (Xinhua) -- China's local governments should step up efforts to close 10 million kilowatts of outdated coal-fueled power station capacity this year, Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said Friday.This year is crucial to completing the country's energy saving and emission reduction goals as set out in the Eleventh Five-Year Plan (from 2006 to 2010), Li said in a letter to a national work conference held in Beijing discussing the elimination of backward production capacity.Official figures show China's unit gross domestic product (GDP) energy consumption fell 14.38 percent during the first four years of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan. But efficiency has to improve if the nation is to meet the 20 percent target set for the five-year period."This move is conducive to optimizing the country's power structure, enhancing energy saving and reducing pollution," Li said.

BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Two spokespersons have been named for China's Information Office of the State Council, or Cabinet, and the International Communication Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.The two spokespersons are Guo Weimin, director of the press bureau under the two offices, and Li Wufeng, director of the offices' Internet affairs bureau, according to a press release on the office's official website.In December last year, Wang Chen, director of the State Council Information Office, said the establishment of a spokesperson system for the CPC committees would be a major task for 2010.The system would be promoted in departments of the CPC Central Committee and provincial-level committees to enable them to release information on Party-related affairs by holding press conferences and providing interview opportunities, he said.
BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- China and Finland here on Tuesday marked their 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties at an evening reception.Addressing the reception, Wang Gang, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said the two countries had become "reliable partners of cooperation."Finnish President Tarja Halonen echoed Wang, saying information and environmental concerns had become important areas of cooperation.The president said she was leading a delegation of business people to China to build links between the two countries. She said she looked forward to a clean tech workshop slated for Wednesday.Halonen arrived at Beijing Tuesday morning, kicking off her six-day visit to China. WASHINGTON, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday called for concerted action by all countries to enhance nuclear security while stressing the need to properly address the challenge."The potential threat of nuclear terrorism cannot be neglected and the risk of nuclear material diversion and illicit trafficking is on the rise," Hu said in a speech delivered at the Nuclear Security Summit here.In the speech, Hu put forward five proposals on ways to strengthen nuclear security.First, the Chinese president said, all countries need to honor their commitments and responsibilities by adopting effective measures to secure nuclear materials and facilities.Chinese President Hu Jintao attends the first plenary session of the Nuclear Security Summit at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, April 13, 2010.Second, Hu said, they should consolidate the existing international legal framework on nuclear security, which consists of the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism.Hu's third proposal is to strengthen international cooperation by sharing experience, exchanging information and cooperating on law enforcement.Fourth, he said, there is a need to help developing countries enhance their nuclear security capacity. Therefore he called for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the developed countries to offer greater assistance to developing countries in that respect.Finally, the president said that all countries should properly handle the relationship between nuclear security and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
