SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The founder and former CEO of a San Diego startup pleaded guilty Wednesday to a federal wire fraud charge for stealing more than .5 million from his own company.Jeffrey Fildey, 56, of Las Vegas, created GoFormz Inc. -- which provides online mobile forms and reporting products -- and began illegally taking money from the company sometime around late 2015 and continued to do so through August 2017, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.U.S. Attorney Robert S. Brewer said, Fildey "abused a position of trust to brazenly steal company assets, treating GoFormz Inc. as his own private slush fund."Prosecutors say Fildey obtained loans -- supposedly for the company -- then kept the funds for himself, paid for personal expenditures on company credit cards, received cash advances for himself on company credit cards and took money directly from the company's bank account.A U.S. Attorney's Office statement announcing the plea cited examples that included a 6,250 loan he obtained for the company, which he immediately wired from the firm's bank account to his personal bank account. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County students' performance on standardized tests in English and math mostly held steady from the previous year, according to scores released Wednesday by the California Department of Education.The performance of San Diego County students on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress tests generally surpassed that of students statewide, according to the department. The CAASPP tests were administered in the spring to more than 3 million students across the state in grades 3-8 and 11. In San Diego County, 26.45% of the more than 250,000 students who took the tests exceeded the state standard in English, up slightly from 25.79 percent the previous year. According to the state, 30.1% met the standard, down slightly from 30.46% last year; 20.89% ``nearly'' met the standard, down slightly from 20.93% last year; and 22.55% failed to meet it, down from 22.82% the previous year. In math, 23.45% exceeded the standard, 21.6% met it, 24.84% nearly met it and 30.12% failed to meet it. The percentages from the previous year were 22.52%, 21.76%, 25.37% and 30.36%, respectively. Statewide, 22.23% exceeded the standard in English, while 28.64% met it, 22.4% nearly met it and 26.73% failed to meet it. In math, 19.69% exceeded the standard, 20.04% met it, 25.41% nearly met it and 34.86% failed to meet it. The statewide scores were all also moderately improved from the previous year. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police sought public help Tuesday to identify a pair of suspects who robbed two San Diego State University Students at gunpoint just blocks from campus.The students were walking about 1:35 a.m. Monday at Campanile Drive and Dorothy Drive when two men approached and demanded their belongings, according to the SDSU Police Department. One of the suspects was armed with a handgun.The victims complied with the demands and were not injured, according to police, who said the suspects fled in a white, four-door car heading north on Campanile Drive toward Montezuma Road.Both suspects were described as roughly 170-pound black men, one about 5- foot-7 and the other about 5-foot-10. They both wore dark hooded sweatshirts, saggy pants and sneakers.The San Diego Police Department is investigating the robbery, but university police released information as part of a community safety notification.Anyone with information about the crime was asked to call the SDPD at (619) 531-2000. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Mesa College announced Friday the opening of its on-campus support center for current and former foster youth.The Fostering Academic Success and Transitions Center opened Thursday, coinciding with Mesa College's first week of classes in the fall 2019 semester. The FAST Center offers services such as tutoring, computer access and a food pantry and will serve as a gathering space for youth who have gone through the foster care system."The number one goal we had in creating this program was to make it extremely difficult to NOT be successful," FAST Scholars Program Coordinator Sade Burrell said. "The center is a place for students to get the resources they need, whether that includes counseling, tutoring, food, child care, emergency housing and any other need unique to their situation."Mesa College is the first community college in San Diego County to open an on-campus support center for students in the foster system. Currently, only about one-in-10 foster youth graduate from college and one-third of former foster youth are homeless by age 25. College officials hope the FAST Center will help quell those numbers for students in San Diego."What this center does is say, we see our foster youth. We see their experiences. We see the unique contributions that they bring to the campus; that we understand the many challenges or systemic barriers that are often placed in their way," said Ashanti Hands, the college's vice president of student services. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate dipped slightly to 3.2 percent in November, with nonfarm industries adding nearly 10,000 jobs, the California Employment Development Department announced Friday. The November unemployment rate is down from a revised 3.3 percent in October and even further below the 3.5 percent rate in November 2017. Total nonfarm employment increased by 9,800 jobs from October to November while total farm employment lost 300 jobs. Nonfarm employment now totals 1,503,800 in San Diego County and farm jobs total 8,500. The trade, transportation and utilities industry added 5,900 jobs month-over-month, the most of any industry in the county. Government was the county's only other industry to add more than 800 jobs, increasing by 2,900. According to EDD data, 1,300 of the government jobs added were in the state and local education sub-industries. The leisure and hospitality industry continued to lose jobs as 2018 recedes further away from the summer months. The industry lost the most jobs of any in the county from October to November at 1,300. Year-over-year data showed an employment increase of 26,400, all nonfarm jobs, from November 2017 to November 2018. A majority of those gains, 16,500 jobs, came in the professional and business services industry. Year-over-year farm employment stayed steady at 8,500 jobs. California's unadjusted unemployment rate dipped from 4.1 percent in October to 3.9 percent in November, according to the EDD. That rate is also below the state's unemployment rate in November 2017, 4.2 percent.
