In a landmark decision, an Oklahoma judge on Monday ordered pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson to pay 2 million for its role in the state's opioid crisis. The verdict issued by Cleveland County District Judge Thad Balkman marks the end of the first state trial attempting to hold a pharmaceutical company accountable for one of the worst health epidemics in history. In his ruling, Balkman said the opioid crisis has "ravaged" the state of Oklahoma.Oklahoma is one of dozens of states suing opioid drugmakers and this case is the first state case to reach trial. A federal trial is slated for this fall in which nearly 2,000 cases involving cities, counties, communities and tribal lands have been rolled into one, accusing opioid makers of causing the epidemic.Attorneys across the nation -- especially those which are part of the trial set for federal court in Ohio this fall -- have been "watching and learning from the case Oklahoma assembled, while defendants have been watching for vulnerabilities in that case," Carl Tobias, a professor of law at the 1080

INDIANAPOLIS — A private, Catholic high school in Indianapolis has fired a teacher in a same-sex marriage after Archbishop Charles Thompson of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis told the school they would forfeit their Christian identity if they didn't. After 22 months of discussion with the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, Cathedral High School said it made the decision to follow the direct guidance of Thompson and "separate from the teacher," the school said in a letter on their website. The school says if they did not fire the teacher, they would lose the "ability to celebrate the Sacraments as we have in the past 100 years with our students and community.""Please know that we offer our prayers and love to this teacher, our students and faculty, our Archbishop, and all associated with Cathedral as we continue to educate our students in the Catholic Holy Cross tradition," the school said in the letter. "We ask that dialogue about this difficult situation be respectful of the dignity of every person and that you continue to pray for our Cathedral family and the wider Indianapolis community."Last week, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School said the Archdiocese of Indianapolis would no longer recognize them because they would not fire a teacher also in a same-sex marriage. You can read the full letter from the high school 1344

It’s snow day in the nation’s capital. Washington, D.C. is just one of many places being hit by winter weather as Winter Storm Petra moves across the Midwest and eastern part of the country. Seven-year-old Elin Neuville and her father got the day off and took advantage of the snow by sledding all morning. But it wasn’t fun and games for many others. The weather went downhill overnight, bringing snow, sleet, and heavy rain across the country. More than 160 million people were impacted. The winter storm forced thousands of flights to be canceled, including more than 700 in and out of D.C. alone. Many passengers were left stuck at airports because of delays. “I've been up since about 5 or 6, just checking to see if my flight was going to be impacted and it wasn't. It wasn't until I got here it was delayed,” said one frustrated passenger. Flooding is a big concern in parts of the south. Nashville has already received more than a foot of rain. 966

It’s been nearly nine months since Hurricane Michael hit the Florida Panhandle. Though time has passed, those living in the remains of what Hurricane Michael left in its wake are struggling. Tyndall Air Force Base is one of the many places still trying to recover and rebuild. Hurricane Michael was the first Category Hurricane to strike the contiguous United States Since Andrew in 1992. According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Hurricane Michael did nearly billion in damage. However, nearly nine months since the storm there is still plenty of damage and debris in Panama City, Panama City Beach, and Mexico Beach, where Michael hit the hardest.“Life at Tyndall prior to the storm was your normal Air Force Base,” says Col. Jeff Hawkins, the vice wing commander of the 325th flight wing at Tyndall Air Force Base. “When the storm was about to hit, we had about three and a half days to prepare. We had to recall all of our pilots and maintainers to prepare the aircraft to launch. Within 18 hours, we ended up getting 70 percent of our aircraft out.” According to Hawkins, the aircraft that weren’t able to make it out, including 17 F-22 jets, were damaged, but are currently getting repairs. “About 50 percent of them were destroyed, and 50 percent of them were able to be recovered," Hawkins explains. "The total cost for the Air Force is estimated around .25 billion for the entire recovery. The rebuild portion itself will cost around .7 billion.”Hawkins said the recovery of the entire base is estimated to take between five and six years. While no one lost their life in the storm, plenty did lose their homes. “Everybody’s got a different scenario they’re dealing with,” Hawkins says. “Some people owned homes in the community, and they are in the process of rebuilding those homes and repairing. Unfortunately, for those that lived on the base, they didn’t have a home to come back to. For instance, my family is living in Eglin Air Force Base, and I commute here three or four days a week.” Eglin Air Force base is nearly two hours west of Tyndall. However, according to Hawkins, Tyndall AFB is so vital to the military because of the training it provides and the airspace. When the storm hit, the base had to take a hiatus between 60 and 90 days. But now, training continues while the base still recovers. “The one mission that is currently not being flown at Tyndall Air Force Base itself is we have moved our F-22 aircraft to Eglin," Hawkins says. "But with every bad there’s good, so there’s an opportunity to build the Air Force Base of the future.” 2607

INDIANAPOLIS — A boy was hit by a car Monday afternoon on the west side of Indianapolis after somehow leaving his Indianapolis Public School. Now, the boy's parents want answers. "They failed me and my child, severely. My son could've been killed," Pearl Barnett, parent of IPS student who was hit by a car, said. "This is a mother's worst nightmare."First-grader, Frank Barnett, who has autism, has been through a lot the past 48 hours."I'd like to see justice for my son. I really would," Pearl said. "Because, unfortunately, he's nonverbal. He can't speak for himself."According to Frank's Individualized Education Program through Stephen Foster School 67, he is never to be left alone. The 7-year-old's mother wants to know how he was able to leave the west side school, somehow wander to a family friend's home nearby, and get hit by a car. "I got in the ambulance, and he had a gauge here where his skull was actually showing. And a busted chin," Pearl said. "I mean he was just covered in blood."Later — a concussion, nearly 50 stitches, and bruising head-to-toe — Frank had to spend the night in the hospital and is now recovering. His mother feels the school screwed up, letting him escape and didn't react quick enough to protect him.All of this happened during dismissal when students are trying to exit the school building — a time when Frank should have been riding home on the bus."He gets curb to curb service due to the autism. And when he gets in one of those moods, depending on what happened at that time of the incident, he runs," Pearl informed. "And they're all aware of this. It's stated in his IEP which I do have that he should never be left unattended. He's always got to be with another adult which he was not."IPS would not speak on camera about this — saying he broke away from a staff member and ran out of the building. School administrators immediately called IPS Police as they searched for him. The school says they followed all of the proper protocols, but would not share what those protocols were.
