SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University is defending its coronavirus-related disciplinary protocols after angry parents criticized them. The family of a student tells ABC 10News that she may be suspended for an entire semester for not reporting her COVID-19 test result fast enough.Marc Peterson says that his daughter is a sophomore. He asked that ABC 10News not show her face or use her name out of fear of retribution. He says that she lives in a single room in the dorms. When she fell ill, he says that she visited the County’s testing site on-campus, which is where she reportedly tested positive. Peterson says that she waited four days to notify the housing authority, instead of doing it immediately.“She thought [that] she didn't have to because the test was done on-campus. She thought it was being reported to the school,” he told ABC 10News on Monday and added, “The documentation that she had signed for housing said that she should report results or contact with other students ‘immediately' and ‘immediately' is not defined in any of the paperwork.”He says that she self-quarantined but still got in trouble. Peterson shared a letter that he says the school sent her which outlined options of taking an academic suspension for the spring semester or taking an academic suspension for this current semester. “It means that all the work that you've done all this semester will be wiped out. You're giving up this entire semester,” he explained.He says that he’s part of a Facebook group where dozens of other SDSU parents are posting about similar disciplinary actions for, what he calls, minor offenses during a rapidly changing pandemic. “It seems like the school is very overhandedly punishing students in this environment,” he added.Peterson says that his daughter plans to fight the possibility of suspension with the school.SDSU sent the following information to ABC 10News."We cannot provide specific information relating to specific cases or students’ academic records due to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System has approved a plan to convert all of the agency's 800 buses to a zero-emission fleet by 2040.The agency will send its plan to the California Air Resources Board for certification. State regulations require public transit agencies to gradually transition to all-zero emission bus fleets by 2040.MTS' plan aims to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions by about 43% over the next 19 years. The cost of the full transition is about 1 million over that same time frame. It will cost about 5 million more to acquire land and build a new facility to accommodate additional electric buses, according to MTS.A "first-in-the-nation" overhead gantry system is also included in the plans to automate charging."MTS has been testing six electric buses in revenue service over the past 10 months and we’ve been very pleased with their performance," said Sharon Cooney, MTS Chief Executive Officer. "The performance data makes us confident that we can make a transition to an entire fleet of zero-emissions buses over the next 19 years, and continue to provide the highest quality of service our passengers expect and deserve."The busses will be rolled out in priority to routes through communities considered by MTS to experience the most negative impacts of greenhouse gas emissions and environmental health. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some schools are preparing for in-person learning and parents have mixed emotions.In July, ABC 10News interviewed the Batten, Campbell, and Chavez families. It has been quite a journey since then.“There’s so much uncertainty,” said parent Tancy Campbell.“We just don’t know what the future’s going to hold,” added Patrick Batten, whose three children are in the Poway Unified School District.Gina Chavez’s three children are in the Sweetwater Union High School District. The district was the first to start the school year in distance learning in early August. She originally described the first day as “crazy,” but said it has gotten better since then.“It’s been good. I have to say I think we’ve all kind of found our schedule,” Chavez said. However, she has dealt with what many parents can relate to—how to communicate the changes with the kids.“My daughter in particular, she really wants to go back because she is seeking that normalness of life before the pandemic. Every week, we’re having to talk to her,” Campbell said.Chula Vista parent Tancy Campbell goes back and forth on the best way to teach her two kids. In August, she wanted there to be a path to send her children back to in-person learning safely.Late Friday, the Chula Vista Elementary School District superintendent announced a plan to bring some preschool through second grade students back on campus. That news caught Campbell by surprise, as she was unaware of the change.“I don’t know to feel about that,” Campbell said. She is now leaning toward homeschooling permanently.“Each person [has] to do what’s best for their family and sometimes, it may not be going back,” Campbell said.Patrick Batten is looking forward to sending his kids back to in-person instruction. “Book learning is only part of going to school,” Batten said. He said his kids also looking for that social interaction.On October 1st, one of Patrick’s three children will be heading back to the classroom part-time. The Poway Unified School District announced a phase reopening plan for some elementary schools.“We’re happy to put him back, even if it’s only two and a half hours because at least he gets to be with his friends, see his teacher,” Batten said.His daughters though, will not be going back to school just yet. Batten said it is creating some tension in his household. In the meantime, he and his wife—who both work full-time—have enrolled their children in the Boys and Girls Club to help with distance learning. It is costing them hundreds of dollars a week.“It’s been an emotional rollercoaster for us as the parents and the kids as well,” Batten said. 2642
