SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border officials seized more than 10 tons of marijuana hidden behind a cargo shipment at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry this week.At about 9 a.m. Monday, an agent with U.S. Customs and Border Protection was inspecting a truck with a manifested shipment of "plastic garment hangers." The vehicle was referred to a secondary inspection where an x-ray machines would continue the inspection.During the secondary inspection, officers detected an anomaly which prompted another examination this time with a canine. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border Patrol agents arrested five people in connection with a human smuggling incident, including one man convicted of being a sexual predator.A vehicle traveling through a temporary immigration checkpoint in Potrero failed to stop at about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, before agents stopped the vehicle several yards past the checkpoint.Agents say five males in the vehicle were questioned. Three passengers in the vehicle's backseat said they were from Mexico but had no U.S. documentation, according to CBP. The driver and front seat passenger claimed to be from the U.S.The driver and front passenger were arrested on suspicion of smuggling and the three other passengers were arrested for being in the U.S. illegally, CBP said. During a records check at a nearby station, agents learned one passenger, a 39-year-old Mexican national, was convicted in 2012 of kidnapping and rape of a minor in San Diego. He was sentenced to a seven-year prison term and removed from the U.S.“I am proud of the great work agents demonstrated in arresting this known child predator,” said Chief Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison. “Their actions help keep our communities safer.”Both U.S. citizens face human smuggling charges and the previously deported Mexican man faces federal charges. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Chris Cate may soon feel like the loneliest politician in San Diego.Come December, he'll likely be the only Republican on the otherwise Democratic San Diego City Council. That’s because it appears Democrats will secure an 8-1 advantage on the City Council, based on returns from Tuesday’s election.“We'll have to figure out a new path going into election two years from now and another election two years after that,” Cate said.Cate is a San Diego native who represents the city's North Central areas. The jobs are technically nonpartisan, but divides do show when it comes to key votes on housing development, city contracting, and public safety. Cate says he won't be shy.“And really try to ensure that we as a government are mindful of the fact that we rely on taxpayer dollars to provide those resources, and not try to go back to the well multiple times to increase fees or taxes,” Cate said.Cate describes himself as a fiscal conservative and social moderate. He joined the council in 2014, when Democrats had a 5-4 advantage over Republicans. Democrat registration has exploded since then, with some politicians abandoning the Republican Party.Termed out Councilman Mark Kersey is now an independent, and State Assemblyman Brian Maienschein flipped to a democrat.But Cate says he'll never leave the party.“Absolutely not… 100%, no,” he said.Being the lone Republican on the council could also raise Cate’s political profile. For instance, many times he'd be the only alternative viewpoint for journalists to ask for comment. Cate said, however, that he's not seeking higher office. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As schools reopen with distance learning, a local nonprofit is working to bridge the digital divide during a critical time.Tammy Hershfield co-founded Computers 2 San Diego Kids 17 years ago, providing refurbished computers to low-income children. She says the local digital divide remains a big one."One in four children in San Diego don't have computer in their home, and 50 percent of those are low income families," said Hershfield.The digital divide is now even more concerning because of COVID-19, as students begin the school year with distance learning."These kids were already at a disadvantage. They were having to do their learning just in the classroom. Not they don't even have that, so we need to get them these computers," said Hershfield.Since the pandemic started, the nonprofit has refurbished and distributed nearly 18,000 computers to local kids. Dozens of volunteers and staff are working on the computers every day."We hired 14 additional staff. We're open six days a week, working 10 hours a day to get things done," said Hershfield.Families receiving the computers pick up the computers at the nonprofit's warehouse in the Miramar area. Hershfield remembers one family, a furloughed single mother of 4 with a 17-year-old daughter applying for college and loans on a phone. That family received two computers."Mom cried, and I cried. The digital disparity is real, and COVID-19 has put a on shining light on it. We can band together and help the people that need the help," said Hershfield.Hershfield says they have about 6,000 computers being worked on and need more donated computers.The nonprofit has partnered with Cox Communications to include free internet access for up to four months. 1742

Harrison said on Twitter he met with Friends of Friendship Park and apologized for the “unintentional destruction of the garden.”“The original intent was to have the garden trimmed. We take full responsibility, are investigating the event, & look forward to working with FoFP on the path forward,” Harrison continued.
