SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Julian man was behind bars Tuesday on suspicion of fleeing after the car he was driving struck and fatally injured a bicyclist on a rural road east of El Cajon.Craig Wendell Nelson, 56, was heading east on Dehesa Road near Singing Hills Golf Course when his 1993 Mitsubishi Mirage veered into a bike lane east of Willow Glen Drive and hit Kevin Wilson of La Mesa from behind about 10:45 a.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.Medics took Wilson, also 56, to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, where was pronounced dead.Following the crash, Nelson allegedly kept driving to the east and south before pulling over on Sloane Canyon Road and fleeing on foot, CHP public- affairs Officer Travis Garrow said.Officers eventually found the abandoned vehicle, and a helicopter search crew spotted Nelson in a nearby brushy area. He was arrested and booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and- run.Nelson was being held on ,000 bail pending arraignment, tentatively scheduled for Thursday afternoon. 1083

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Firefighters extinguished several rubbish fires today in alleys in the Logan Heights neighborhood, police said.The fires were discovered at 12:32 a.m. in the 1900 block of Kearney Avenue and in the 2000 block of Julian Avenue. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - In a first for San Diego County elections, the polls for the Nov. 3 Presidential General Election will open for four days, starting today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.In light of COVID-19, voters were encouraged to vote from home using their mail ballot. This close to the election, voters are advised to not mail in ballots, as they may not reach the registrar in time.For those who want to vote in person, they can vote early at their assigned polling place from Saturday, Oct. 31 through Monday, Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.On Thursday, the registrar reported nearly half of the county's 1.95 million registered voters had already cast their ballots, more than double the number received by that point in 2016.More than 937,000 ballots had been received as of Thursday. Gavin Newsom announced Friday that the city of San Diego is one of four cities in the state that will receive 0,000 in state funding to support residents affected by power shutoffs due to the threat of wildfires.While visiting Sonoma County emergency responders, local officials and residents affected by the Kincade Fire, Newsom announced the establishment of the Local Government Public Safety Power Shutoffs Resiliency Program, which will provide funding to local governments to maintain power service to high- risk areas affected by power shutoffs.San Diego, Los Angeles, San Jose and Oakland will each receive 0,000 in state funding through the program and all 58 counties in the state will receive at least 0,000 each.
