BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's railways carried 60.75 million passengers nationwide around the seven days of National Day holidays and one day of Mid-Autumn Festival, the Ministry of Railways said on Friday.     The figure was 2.18 million more or 3.7 percent up from the same period last year, according to the ministry.     The peak transport season lasted for eleven days from Sept. 28 to Oct. 8. MOSCOW, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese merchants will be allowed to retrieve their goods in a closed Moscow market, the head of a Chinese coordination group said on Thursday.     A Chinese coordination group on Thursday discussed with Moscow's consumer department the clearing up of Chinese merchants' stalls in the Cherkizovsky market as well as the transferring of their goods.     The Russian side agreed to take further steps to safeguard the market's order and to work with the Chinese side to crack down on the illegal activities, said Cai Guiru, head of the temporary Chinese coordination group and chairperson of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Russia.     It is agreed that Chinese merchants will be allowed to clean up their stalls and ship out their merchandise during a specific period of time every day, Cai said.     The Russian side took "sincere and earnest" attitudes towards the handling of the market closure, in the hope that most of the Chinese merchants will be able to retrieve their goods safely, she said.     This meeting is helpful and the Russian side heard positive opinions from Chinese vendors, said Georgy Smoleyevcky, first deputy head of the Moscow Consumer Market and Services Department.     The Russian side will make conclusions accordingly and give instructions to relevant departments, he said, expressing the hope that complaints from Chinese traders will be less and less in future.     The official also dismissed the speculation that a Chinese shopping mall will be built in the place of the closed Cherkizovsky, Russia's biggest wholesale market.     The coordination group, formed under the auspices of the Chinese embassy in Russia in July, involves heads of China's provincial chambers of commerce.     Russian police abruptly shut down the nearly 300-hectare market in northeastern Moscow on June 29, after the disclosure of various illegal and irregular operations in the market by the Russian Federal Supervision Service for Consumer Rights Protection and People Welfare.     A Chinese senior delegation, led by Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng, reached broad consensus with the Russian side on the closure issue.

URUMQI, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The 9th China Xinjiang International Agricultural Fair opened in the northwestern city of Urumqi Wednesday, attracting 110,000 business people from around the world.     Representatives with 987 companies from 15 countries and regions have arrived to attend the three-day event, which features exhibitions of fertilizers, pesticides and seeds, the organizers said in a press release.     It would be the largest fair compared with the previous eight sessions in terms of its visitors and scope, the organizers said.     "The fair is held against the backdrop of global financial crisis and the July 5 riot," the press release said. "The organizers will arrange activities to promote Xinjiang's agricultural products that have not been selling well due to the aftermath of the riot."     The riot in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, has left 197 people dead, mostly innocent civilians, and more than 1,600 others injured.     But business people still hope to cash in on the vast market opportunities of Xinjiang, which takes up a sixth of Chinese territory, as Urumqi is gradually recovering from the violence.     "Our company entered the Xinjiang market in 2005 selling fertilizers and has won a wide recognition of local farmers," said Gu Rongbao, manager of the Jinlaifu Chemicals Import and Export Co. Ltd. from eastern Shandong Province. "We have confidence in the future development in Xinjiang."     The annual fair is jointly organized by the regional government's departments of agriculture, animal husbandry among others.

BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China will lower gasoline and diesel prices by 190 yuan (27.8 U.S. dollars) per tonne from Wednesday, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced Tuesday.     The benchmark price of gasoline will be 6,620 yuan a tonne, and for diesel 5,880 yuan a tonne, according to the NDRC.     The retail price of gasoline will drop by 0.14 yuan per liter and that of diesel will decrease by 0.16 yuan per liter.     It is the eighth fuel price adjustment since the country adopted a new fuel pricing mechanism, which took effect on Jan. 1 and the first reduction of fuel prices in two months.     Under the pricing mechanism, the NDRC will consider changing the benchmark retail prices of oil products when the international crude price changes more than 4 percent over 22 straight working days.     The price cut was in accordance with the international price changes, the NDRC said.     The average crude price of Brent, Dubai and Cinta has declined to 71.52 U.S. dollars a barrel, down 5.02 percent since the previous fuel price adjustment, according to the Shanghai-based CBI (China) Co., Ltd., a leading service provider in Chinese commodity markets.
