COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The pandemic has put a major strain on the job market this year, but in the Pikes Peak region, job opportunities are starting to come back. KOAA spoke with employment experts who say if you're looking to land a job you'll want to be careful with your social media profiles.Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. These are just some of the social media platforms employers are looking at to try to find out more about you during your job search. Employment experts say what you choose to do on these platforms can either help you or hurt you."Companies are going to Google you. They are going to look at you. They're going to Facebook stalk you, or they're going to look at Twitter accounts. They're going to look at Instagram if they can get in," said Pikes Peak Workforce Center Executive Director and CEO Traci Marques. "Obviously LinkedIn is a great platform to be on the professional side, but at the same time you really have to be careful with your social media."The experts say the first step in understanding what employers are seeing is to do the search yourself."Google yourself. If someone is going to Google you Google yourself so you know what's out there," said Marques "Lockdown your social media. Companies everywhere are hopping on the bandwagon to eliminate plastic straws, as plastic becomes harder and harder to recycle.An Oregon man, who started his glass straw business over a decade ago, is finally seeing his business take off.“We’re still doing the same thing we’ve been doing for over 12 years,” says Craig Graffius.But when Graffius started making straws out of glass to cut down on plastic, he was on to something.“A sustainable product is so much better than a throw away product,” says Graffius. “By far.”And this June, it seems a lot more people agreed with him.“500% percent, 600 percent growth overnight,” Graffius says.Suddenly, Graffius found he couldn’t keep up with the demand. He went from producing 2,000 eco-glass straws a week to a couple thousand a day.The push to eliminate plastic straws has caught on so fast, Graffius had to hire a business partner to keep up with inquiries from around the world.As for the copycat companies that he knows are popping up, he sees it as a good thing because they’re all working toward the same end goal.“The more education we can do as a team, the better for us,” Graffius says. 1157

(AP) — The parents of a mentally ill man fatally shot by an off-duty officer in a California Costco store remain hospitalized and their lawyer says neither is well enough to be interviewed by police.Attorney Dale Galipo tells the Los Angeles Times that Paola French was in a coma and in critical condition as of Wednesday. Her husband, Russell French, was in serious condition.Police in the city of Corona say detectives are continuing to interview witnesses and evaluate video and forensic evidence from the store.Thirty-two-year-old Kenneth French was shot and killed last week by an off-duty Los Angeles police officer. The officer says French attacked him without provocation. Congress has been unable to agree on a new stimulus package, and now, a key feature of the last package--the 0 enhanced unemployment benefit--has lapsed.“We definitely anticipate significant increases in the number of families and individuals that will begin to rely on emergency food programs more heavily as a result of the loss of this 0 additional benefit,” said Zanita Tisdale, who works with the Food Bank for New York City.The Food Bank for New York City has provided more than 30 million meals from March to April, just in New York. With many on unemployment losing almost two-thirds of their income now, there will be an even greater need in the city and beyond.“Our network of over 1,000 emergency food providers across 90 percent of the zip codes here in the city are really bracing themselves and making sure they are already bringing in enough resources,” Tisdale added.A study done by Feeding America shows 1 in 6 Americans could now struggle with hunger as a result of the financial hardships caused by the pandemic. That is 54 million Americans, 17 million more people since the start of the pandemic.“About 30 to 40 percent of estimated clients that are coming to food banks have never called a food bank before for help,” said Zuani Villarreal with Feeding America.“The deeper we get into this economic crisis and also taking into consideration that Congress is essentially late in passing new legislation, the more significant our economic challenges are going to be as a nation,” said Mark Hamrick, a senior economic analyst with Bankrate.com.Hamrick warns if Congress doesn’t act fast to end the lapse of enhanced benefits, not only will more people go hungry, but our economy will take a more troubling hit.“The deeper we get into this lack of action on the part of elected officials, the more it exacerbates the level of uncertainty that we have,’ said Hamrick. “I do believe, and I hope I am not overly optimistic, that both sides will come together.”Currently, the House’s idea for a second package, the HEROES Act, was passed in May. COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced that their giraffe, named Cami, died early Saturday morning after having a Caesarian section to deliver her calf, which died shortly after delivery.Cami collapsed around 1 a.m. and was unable to return to her feet. She died shortly after.Cami went into labor on Dec. 4 and veterinarians discovered the baby giraffe was presenting hooves first, a condition with extremely low survival rates, according to zoo officials.The Zoo’s animal care team performed an emergency C-section. After the calf was removed, the veterinary team found that the calf had serious congenital defects and would not have survived even if it had been born front hooves first, officials said.Cami was a 6-year-old Masai giraffe that came to the Columbus Zoo in 2013 from the Nashville Zoo.The death of Cami and her calf mark the third Masai giraffe to die in the past 30 days at the zoo.
