SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When the Chargers bolted north to the Los Angeles area, not only did they vacate what’s now known as SDCCU stadium, they also emptied out of their facility off Murphy Canyon Road.Formerly known as Chargers Park, the facility belongs to the City of San Diego. Team 10 discovered even though the site is vacant, the utility and maintenance bills continue to pile up.According to data analyzed by Team 10, the electric bill for August 2018 was ,949.78. The most recent water and wastewater bill from the end of June to the end of July 2018 shows a balance of more than ,000 and a year's worth of landscaping, maintenance, and fire safety repairs ran ,067.12.A city spokesperson said any vacant building still has operating and utility costs.“This is not a way to maximize taxpayer dollars,” said San Diego Councilmember David Alvarez, who saw the bills Team 10 received through a public information request. In 2017, Alvarez and Councilmember Lorie Zapf backed a plan that would have transformed the facility into a temporary homeless shelter. It didn’t happen.“We have a poor record and a history of not being able to use our real estate assets in a good way,” Alvarez said.Team 10 started looking into the operating costs after seeing a video posted to YouTube of people touring the facility. The guys from “The Somethin’ or Other Tour” took a peek around the building. The team of brothers explores new locations each week as part of their online content company. In their video, the lights inside the building appeared to be on, and the sprinklers were running. In one portion of the video you can hear one of the hosts saying, “The Chargers should have stayed in San Diego, that’s what we believe, and we’re sticking to that.”According to the city, the facility has been used off and on since the Chargers left. The San Diego Police Department occupied it Sept. 11, 2017 through Oct. 31, 2017, along with Jan. 31, 2018 and Feb. 19, 2018.San Diego State University also held a brief tenancy between Feb. 28, 2018 and March 14, 2018.The utility bills analyzed by Team 10 are noticeably higher when the facility is being used.A city spokesperson denied Team 10’s request for an on-camera interview about the costs and stated no one was available. They did email a response to our request: 2326

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Uber Eats will begin testing a new service that will deliver food using drones in San Diego, the company announced Wednesday. Uber and San Diego were granted the winning bid by the Federal Aviation Administration last year to test the new delivery service, according to the company. Here’s how Uber says the system will work: After a restaurant loads the meal into the drone and the drone takes off, a system will notify a nearby Uber Eats delivery partner to meet the drone at a drop-off location. The orders will then be picked up and hand-delivered to customers. RELATED: Juniper & Ivy ranked among best restaurants in the US for a night outIn the future, Uber Elevate plans to enable the drones to land atop parked vehicles within its rides network near delivery locations before the food is picked up and hand-delivered. The company says the initial phase of testing in San Diego was done with McDonald’s, but that it will be expanded later this year to include more restaurants, including Juniper and Ivy. “We’ve been working closely with the FAA to ensure that we’re meeting requirements and prioritizing safety,” said Luke Fischer, Head of Flight Operations at Uber Elevate. “From there, our goal is to expand Uber Eats drone delivery so we can provide more options to more people at the tap of a button. We believe that Uber is uniquely positioned to take on this challenge as we’re able to leverage the Uber Eats network of restaurant partners and delivery partners as well as the aviation experience and technology of Uber Elevate.” 1571

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While many local events went on as planned this weekend, several conferences slated for San Diego have canceled or postponed due to coronavirus worries. So far, a handful of events have pulled back or canceled their plans:The 34th National Institute on White Collar Crime has canceled its planned March 11-13 conference at Marriott Marquis San Diego, citing coronavirus fears. On its website, organizers with the American Bar Association (ABA) said the decision to cancel was made "as a result of the large number of speakers and attendees who were compelled to cancel their participation due to travel restrictions put in place by employers." The institute will not be rescheduled, according to ABA. The organization said refunds are being processed to attendees, but any travel reservations made will have to be handled individually.Leaders of the Experimental Biology conference set to take place April 4-7 canceled the massive gathering over COVID-19 as well. The conference expected more than 12,000 attendees at the San Diego Convention Center. The 2020 CIE Summit business technology summit at Marriott Marquis San Diego has been rescheduled from March 18-20 to Aug. 12-14 "out of an abundance of caution," organizers say. Organizers with the Future of Individualized Medicine 2020, scheduled for March 12-13 at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, also canceled their event "based on concern for the health of our registrants, speakers, exhibitors and staff."The convention center says in addition to the cancellation, some organizers have contacted them about postponing their events until later this year. In response to COVID-19 worries, the convention center says staff have received training and taken precautionary measures, like increasing the frequency of cleaning, disinfecting commonly touched objects, and placing signage and hand sanitizer stations throughout the building.10News has reached out to Comic-Con International regarding any possible adjustments to their July convention, but have not heard back.RELATED COVERAGE:San Diego event organizers temper coronavirus fearsSan Diego economy could take a hit if cruises are canceledThough only a handful of events, each cancellation prolongs worries for those with plans to come to town and those whose livelihood depends on that travel.Joel Valenzuela, the maritime director for Port, says their industry provides about 0 million in economic impact. While no cruises have been canceled, he says the Port expects to take a hit. "We've done things such as increasing sanitation areas within the port facilities, as well as setting aside some prescreening and quarantine areas in case the cruise lines would need it," Valenzuela said. "I don't know how bad it's gonna get, how good it's going to get but hopefully it passes."The convention center could also be affected. The center estimates it had a regional impact of .2 billion in 2018, 7 million of that coming from Comic-Con.According to CIC Research, San Diego visitor spending in 2015 totaled about .9 billion. Visitors who stay in hotels represent about 28 percent of all visitors to the county, but generated about 67 percent of visitor spending.San Diego has not had any local cases of the new coronavirus. Two individuals previously quarantined at MCAS Miramar after being evacuated from China were infected but have since recovered and returned home. 3421

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With summer break approaching, students and parents at Cathedral Catholic High School are pushing to be heard by the school's administration. This comes a week after school leaders decided the girls will not be allowed to wear skirts next year. Students, along with their parents, have been protesting since Monday. Parents tell 10News the push is much more than just the students being allowed to wear skirts. "We just want an opportunity to be heard," says parent Michelle Adams. "The girls would like to wear skirts. It's been a tradition here at the school for forever."It's been one week since the students and parents found out about the changes to next year's dress code. The girls will only be allowed to wear pants, capri pants, and Bermuda shorts. Parents say they wish the school would have included them before making the decision. "It's not so much about the skirts but about the process and the fact that this mandate was just dropped down on high without really consulting," says parent Matthew Boyd. "Our principals are both men," says 10th grade student Samantha Conant. "They don't understand. It's so unfair how they handled the whole thing."Since the memo went out last Friday, parents say the administration has been inaccessible. 10News reached out to the Catholic Diocese about the changes in the dress code for next year. We are still waiting on a response. Summer break is just three days away. Parents say they are still working to meet with the Catholic Diocese and the school's administration on the issue. 1562
