GUANGZHOU, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- What China can do for the world is not to sell out its massive dollar reserve, but slightly increase its hold of the currency to give reasonable support to the U.S. effort to save its economy, said a senior economist here on Saturday.     It is indeed difficult for China to handle its huge forex reserve, as the U.S. currency has already depreciated 20 percent against the Chinese yuan, said Cheng Siwei, well-known economist at a financial forum held in Guangdong.     "China would suffer from losses if it sells off the dollar, so our strategy should be not to sell, but to slightly increase dollar reserve," said Cheng, also former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC).     Cheng made the remarks amid increasing concern that China might use its forex reserve to finance its 4-trillion-yuan stimulus plan. China held 1.9 trillion dollars worth of forex reserve by September this year.     China "can only afford to do what is corresponding to its level of development and national power amid a global crisis," said Cheng.     "We should be prudent as to how to deal with our forex reserve," said Cheng, noting that China, despite its large size of economy, has its gross domestic product (GDP) accounting for only 6 percent of the world's total, and its per capita GDP ranking falling out of the top one hundred list.

SHIJIAZHUANG, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The trial at a court here in Hebei Province of four executives of the Sanlu Group, the major dairy at the center of China's tainted milk scandal, ended without an immediate verdict at 10:10 p.m. on Wednesday.     The trial opened at 8 a.m.     Prosecutors accused Tian Wenhua, Sanlu's former board chairwoman and general manager, and three other executives of producing and selling fake or sub-standard products.     Sanlu Group Co., Ltd., represented by its trade union chairman Ran Weiguang, was also a defendant.     The three other executives are former deputy general managers Wang Yuliang and Hang Zhiqi, and Wu Jusheng, a former executive in charge of the milk procurement division.     All four defendants were arrested on Sept. 26.     At the end of the trial, Ran, on behalf of Sanlu, offered apologies to children sickened by the tainted milk and their families.     The verdict will be announced at an unspecified future date.

LIMA, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday gave a brief outline of the country's future development to the business community of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).     Addressing the APEC Chief Executive Officers (CEO) Summit, Hu said China will continue to follow the Scientific Outlook on Development by putting people first and making development comprehensive, balanced and sustainable.     "We will unswervingly pursue reform, improve the socialist market economy and build systems and institutions that are dynamic, efficient, more open and conducive to scientific development," Hu said.     China will follow a new path of industrialization with Chinese characteristics and transform the mode of economic growth, he said. Chinese President Hu Jintao addresses Peruvian Congress in Lima, capital of Peru, Nov. 20, 2008. Hu said here Thursday that China is willing to make concerted efforts with Latin American countries to establish a comprehensive cooperative partnership of equality, mutual benefit and common development    Instead of relying heavily on higher consumption of resources, China will achieve development by making scientific and technological progress, improving the quality of the workforce and developing innovative management, he added.     Since the beginning of this year, China has taken robust measures to address the complex changes in the international economic environment and the severe challenges of major natural disasters.     "We have strengthened macroeconomic regulation in a timely way," Hu said, adding "The fundamentals of the Chinese economy have not changed."     "The steady and relatively faster economic development in China is in itself a major contribution to upholding international financial stability and promoting world economic development," he emphasized.     Between January and September this year, China's gross domestic product grew by 9.9 percent and the three major demands of investment, consumption and export all grew by over 20 percent.     However, since September, with the spread and development of the financial crisis, difficulties confronting China's economic development have become more and more obvious, Hu said.     The growth rate of China's export has begun to decline and industrial production and corporate profits have been adversely affected to varying degrees, he added.     "In view of this and in order to boost economic development, the Chinese government has strengthened macroeconomic regulation in a timely way and decided to follow a proactive fiscal policy and a moderately easy monetary policy," the president said.     China has lowered the required reserve ratio, cut the deposit and lending rates and eased the corporate tax burdens, he added.     China has recently adopted even stronger measures to generate greater domestic demand, Hu said.     He said the central government has decided to invest an additional 100 billion yuan (14.6 billion U.S. dollars) this year to accelerate projects related to people's livelihood, infrastructure, the eco-environment and post-disaster reconstruction.     This is expected to generate a total of 400 billion yuan (58.4 billion dollars) of investment nationwide, he pointed out, adding between the fourth quarter this year and the end of 2010, investment in these projects alone will reach nearly 4 trillion yuan (584 billion dollars).     Implementation of these measures will give a strong impetus to China's economic development, Hu said.     Hu arrived here on Wednesday for a state visit to Peru and the Economic Leaders' Informal Meeting of APEC scheduled for Nov. 22-23.

HAVANA, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday visited Fidel Castro, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, in Havana.     The two leaders warmly shook hands, exchanged greetings and had a long conversation in a sincere and friendly atmosphere.     Hu said he was delighted to see Castro again. The comrades of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China "have all cared about your health and I brought their sincere greetings to you," he said.     "I see in person that you have recovered and have been energetic so I feel very pleased," he told Castro. Chinese President Hu Jintao (L) visits Fidel Castro, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, in Havana, capital of Cuba, Nov. 18, 2008.    Castro extended a warm welcome to Hu for his second state visit to Cuba. "We are old friends. I am happy to see that you are as energetic as when I met you last time," he said.     Hu said that as the founder of the Cuban socialist revolution and construction, Castro is dearly adored by the Cuban people. During the past half century, Castro led the heroic Cuban people in their fearless struggle to safeguard state sovereignty and adhere to the path of socialism, thus winning respect from people worldwide, including the Chinese people.     Hu said that Castro has followed closely his country's development, showed great concern about people's life and dedicated himself to profound reflections of major strategic issues, such as international affairs and national development.     "Your thoughts and experience will surely guide the Cuban people to continue their march on the road of socialist construction," he said.     On Sino-Cuban relations, Hu said relations between the two countries have withstood the changes of international situation thanks to the joint efforts to forge and nurture their bilateral ties by generations of Chinese leaders, including Mao Zedong, DengXiaoping and Jiang Zemin, and Castro and other Cuban leaders.     "The brotherly friendship between our two countries and two parties has been deeply rooted in the hearts of our two peoples," he said.     "The Chinese people will never forget that thanks to your concern and effort that Cuba became the first Latin American nation to forge diplomatic ties with China 48 years ago," he said.     Thanks to the concerted efforts of both sides, the Sino-Cuban mutually beneficial and friendly cooperation in all areas have been expanding continuously, and bilateral ties have entered a new era of all-round development, said Hu.     "Our two nations, parties and peoples have become reliable friends and brothers who share weal and woe," he said.     "What affected me and other Chinese leaders most is that you always pay close attention to China's development and remain committed to promoting friendly cooperation between our two countries," Hu added.     Hu noted that Castro ordered to send a medical team to China immediately after the devastating earthquake in Wenchuan, southwest China's Sichuan province on May 12.     The Cuban leader also made constant phone calls to offer instructions on the team's work in China, Hu added.     Moreover, in his article entitled China's Victory, Castro has showed his firm support for China on such major issues as Taiwan, Tibet and the Olympic Games in Beijing, the Chinese president said.     The Cuban leader has also showed great concern about the Chinese students studying in Cuba and the progress of a joint ophthalmic hospital. "The Chinese people, the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government will for ever remember all these," he said.     Castro expressed appreciation of China's relief and reconstruction efforts following the Wenchuan earthquake and other natural disasters. He once again congratulated China on its successful hosting of the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics as well as the success of the Shenzhou-7 manned space mission.     Hu said that the Chinese government will always adhere to the principle of long-term friendship between China and Cuba. The Chinese people will, as always, support the just struggle of the Cuban people in safeguarding state sovereignty and opposing outside interference.     China will continue to provide assistance for Cuba within its capacity, and will firmly support the country's socialist cause, he said.     "We will work with the Cuban people to continuously push forward the development of friendship between China and Cuba," he added.     Castro said he and other Cuban comrades have followed closely "everything that happened in China."     "China has a large population and a culture of long standing and the Chinese people are known for their diligence," he said, adding that the Chinese people "have surmounted all manner of unimaginable difficulties and accomplished great achievements in construction."     "As the current international financial crisis is spreading, the Chinese economy has kept a sound momentum for development, demonstrating that China is the most prepared country," he said.     China is the most dynamic nation in the world and "no force can stop it from forging ahead," he said.     The two leaders also exchanged views on the two countries' economic development and major international and regional issues, including the international financial crisis and the world economy.     Before the conclusion of the meeting, Hu again expressed his heartfelt wish for Castro's good health. Castro, in return, expressed his gratitude.     Cuba is the third leg of Hu's five-nation trip. He has attended a Group of 20 summit on the financial crisis in Washington and visited Costa Rica.     He will also visit Peru and Greece, and attend the Economic Leaders' Informal Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in the Peruvian capital of Lima.

BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese officials led by President Hu Jintao on Tuesday marked the 110th anniversary of the birth of Liu Shaoqi, late President and Communist leader who was prosecuted and died during the Cultural Revolution.     "We are gathered here with deep respect to remember his contribution to the independence and liberation of China, the development of the country and welfare of the people," said Hu at the ceremony.     State leaders Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang,He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang attended the ceremony presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao.     Liu worked hard for the cause of Party and people all his life, making great contribution to the revolution and construction of socialism in China, Hu said.     Born in 1898, Liu joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) at the age of 23 and led several important trade union strikes in the1920s.     He marched with the Red Army in the Long March (1934-1936) but, in the middle of it, he was sent to north China that was ruled by then Kuomintang government and led the underground resistance to the Japanese invasion.     In 1945, Liu was elected a member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau and a Central Committee secretary.     When the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, Liu was elected the vice chairman of the central government. He was president from 1959 to 1968 and introduced many pragmatic economic policies.     Liu was removed from all his positions in 1968 during the Cultural Revolution and died in 1969, denounced as a traitor and an enemy agent. In 1980, his reputation was rehabilitated.     "We shall learn from his thoughts, way of working and virtue that would encourage all Party members and people to have confidence and work hard to carry on the cause of revolutionaries of older generations," said Hu.     He urged people to learn from Liu to be loyal to the Party and the people, to always seek truth from facts, to be open to innovation, to be good at applying Marxist principles in China's reality, to be willing to correct mistakes, to put Party and people first and to serve the people heart and soul.     Hu recalled Liu's great and glorious life and praised his achievements, Wen said. "It is of great significance to guide the people to inherit the ideal of older revolutionaries and create a new stage of socialism with Chinese characteristics."
