ATLANTA, Ga. -- From the motivational speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to the spiritual guidance of Mahatma Gandhi, Morehouse College in Atlanta is literally covered with inspirational messages.One phrase, however, has become the mantra for what it takes to become a Morehouse man:“Iron sharpens iron,” said Morehouse College president Dr. David Thomas.Thomas says students and staff at this historically black men’s college have turned struggles into strengths for more than a century.“What we do here is something that doesn’t happen anywhere else on the planet,” he said.The Morehouse campus is quiet this summer with all classes now being taught online. A decision Thomas says may spill over into the fall semester.“I’ve got to do the best job I can for this college,”said Thomas. With staff and salary cuts already happening, the impacts of COVID-19 could last much longer.“When you talk to our students about their experience being here, they will often talk about the power of being in a place where black male excellence is an expectation,” Thomas said. “And that’s hard to communicate in a virtual experience."Morehouse’s 2020 valedictorian, however, was able to express the difficultly of this new reality in simple terms“I think my experience when COVID hit was, I describe it as a little disappointing,” said new graduate Golden Daka.Though Daka is disappointed, he says his class has turned this pandemic into a learning experience.“It let us know that life isn’t not guaranteed and the most precious moments that you cherish could easily be taken away from you,” he said. “So, a lot of people are approaching this as a form of adversity to get stronger an to get better in areas of weakness.”In addition to closing campus, Morehouse College has also canceled all fall sports, which they say is the first Division II HBCU in the country to make that decision.“It’s heartbreaking for me,” Thomas said.Despite the disappointment, Thomas says Morehouse is more focused on academics than athletics, adding that the key to reopening campus is finding a vaccine.“We’re going to have to do that before I think we can declare victory against the virus,” he said.Morehouse now has the chance to play a role in that victory. ATLANTA (AP) — Six Atlanta police officers have been charged after a dramatic video showed authorities pulling two young people from a car during protests over the death of George Floyd. Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard announced the charges during a news conference Tuesday. The Saturday night incident first gained attention from video online and on local news. Four of the officers are charged with aggravated assault, while one faces a charge of aggravated battery.Two of the officers were fired Sunday. BALTIMORE — Americans stepped up their home purchases in June by a robust 20.7% after the pandemic had caused sales to crater in the prior three months. But the housing market could struggle to rebound further in the face of the resurgent viral outbreak and a shrinking supply of homes for sale. Sales of existing homes rose last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.72 million, the National Association of Realtors said. Their data showed all four regions of the country saw growth, with the west experiencing a larger increase. The data included single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops. Despite the sharp monthly gain, purchases are still down 11.3% from a year ago, when homes had sold at an annual pace of 5.32 million.Inventory remains an issues, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). A low number of available homes was an issue before the pandemic. Total inventory is down 18.2 percent from a year ago, according to the data. The low supply and increasing demand could cause a spike in the price of homes.“Home prices rose during the lockdown and could rise even further due to heavy buyer competition and a significant shortage of supply," said Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist.The median price for exisiting-home sales in June was 3.5 percent higher than a year ago. Atlanta police released images late Sunday of a second person of interest in the fatal shooting of an 8-year-old girl on the Fourth of July. Authorities are also offering a ,000 reward for information in the death of Secoriea Turner. At least two shooters were believed to be responsible for her death. Police had released a short video of the first person of interest last week. Photos were released Sunday night of the second person of interest.According to Crime Stoppers in Atlanta, the preliminary investigation suggests the young girl was riding in a car with her mother and an adult friend when they were confronted by a group of people blocking the entrance to a parking lot. At some point, someone in the group opened fire on the car, hitting it several times and striking the child. The driver headed to a nearby hospital, and Turner died from her injuries. Both persons of interest are seen in the images carrying rifles. The fatal shooting happened near the Wendy's where Rayshard Brooks was shot and killed by a police officer. 1051
