CHANGSHA, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Central China's Hunan Province began building the country's third National Supercomputing Center (NSCC) on Sunday, where the world's fastest supercomputer, the Tianhe-1A, will be installed. Designed to handle one quadrillion computing operations per second, the NSCC in Changsha will add to the world's eight quadrillion-level supercomputing centers and national labs, said Du Zhanyuan, vice minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology.The new NSCC will be housed in Hunan University in Changsha, capital of Hunan, and the construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2011, said Du.Photo taken on Nov. 28, 2010 shows the effect displaying design of National Supercomputing Center located in Changsha, central China's Hunan Province. Earlier this month, the Tianhe-1A at the NSCC in Tianjin, which is capable of 2.57 quadrillion computing operations per second, was certified as the world's fastest supercomputer.Once completed, the Tianhe-1A at the NSCC in Changsha will be able to provide supercomputing services to the weather forecast, scientific research, biological pharmaceuticals, animation design and other complex work in central China, said Xu Shousheng, provincial governor of Hunan."The setting up of the NSCC in Changsha will raise the innovative level of Hunan Province and of central China," said Xu.Apart from the ongoing-construction, China has built two supercomputing centers which are located in Tianjin and Shenzhen, respectively.
BEIJING, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday responded to Japan's new defense guidelines, saying China had no intention of threatening anybody.Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu made the remarks when responding to a question on the subject."A certain country has no right to act as a representative of the international community and make irresponsible remarks on China's development," she said.Japan adopted the National Defence Programme Guidelines Friday. Media reports said the guidelines claimed China's military development and lack of transparency were matters of concern to the region and international community, and urged nations to encourage China to act responsibly.China unswervingly follows the path of peaceful development, and its defense policy is defensive in nature, Jiang said, adding that China poses no threat to anybody."The fact is that China's development since its reform and opening up, has brought huge opportunities of common prosperity to the world, including Japan," Jiang said.
JINAN, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Police in east China's Shandong Province said Saturday that one of the two killers who shot dead four policemen on Jan. 4 had also murdered another man before the gunfight.Liu Jianjun, 50, allegedly killed one man on Dec. 29 last year in Dezhou City of Shandong.Liu and his 52-year-old brother Liu Lumin shot at policemen who were investigating the Dec. 29 murder case in Tai'an City of the province on Jan. 4 .Three policemen were killed at the scene, and another died later in the hospital.After gunning down the officers, the two men fled the scene, hijacking four cars and shooting two drivers before their car collided with a police wagon.The gunmen, armed with a homemade pistol and a double-barreled shotgun, continued to fire after police had cornered them, injuring more policemen and civilians.Liu Lumin then shot and killed himself while Liu Jianjun was taken into custody.

BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao appointed a new representative and ambassador to the World Trade Organization(WTO) and a new ambassador to Myanmar, according to a statement from the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) on Thursday.Yi Xiaozhun, 59, previously a vice commerce minister, was appointed representative and ambassador to the global trade body, replacing 64-year-old Sun Zhenyu, who was the country's first WTO representative since China's accession to the WTO in Dec. 2001.Li Junhua was appointed ambassador to Myanmar, succeeding the 54-year-old Ye Dabo.Prior to Thursday's appointment, Li was deputy director of the International Organizations and Conferences Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.The appointment was in line with the decision made by the Standing Committee of the NPC, China's top legislature.
