BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has stressed the need to stabilize commodity prices, extend the coverage of the social security network and boost employment to ensure the country develops in a comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable manner.Hu made the call Tuesday when presiding over lectures on economic development attended by members of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.The lectures were given by two researchers respectively from the National Development and Reform Commission and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.Efforts should be made to establish a long-term mechanism that increases consumptions, renovate and upgrade traditional industries, and cultivate and support strategic emerging industries, Hu noted.Hu, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, called for deepening of the country's reform and opening up, adding that improving people's livelihood and ensuring their well-being, promoting economic growth and maintaining social stability are the Party's top agenda.Hu said impetus should be given to the development of the service industry as well as to the coordination of regional development, and vigorous yet steady endeavors should be made to advance urbanization.Hu also called for efforts to embrace reform and innovation in the country's economic, political, cultural and social systems and urged local authorities to seek opinions and advice from the people in formulating regional development blueprints.Further, Hu asked CPC officials to cement their ties with the people and do practical things for the public.

CHANGCHUN, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) - An electric short circuit in a shop was believed to be the cause of a shopping mall blaze that killed 19 people earlier this month in northeast China's Jilin Province, a spokesman with the provincial work safety bureau said Thursday.The fire broke out on Nov. 5 in Jilin Commercial Building, Jilin City and lasted 12 hours. It left 19 people dead, 24 others injured and took fire fighters 10 hours to extinguish the flames, which ravaged 15,830 square meters of the five-storey mall.Investigations found that a short circuit in Sishulang Shop on the first floor of the mall was the cause of the fire.Police have detained 14 people in connection with the fatal blaze. The families of each of the victims have received at least 250,000 yuan (37,600 U.S. dollars) in compensation from the government.

BRUSSELS, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and EU leaders on Tuesday signed a first joint declaration on strengthening dialogue and cooperation on youth issues as the 2011 EU-China Year of Youth kicked off here.Androulla Vassiliou, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, said at the opening ceremony that the year would open up new horizons for young people from Europe and China by enabling them to share experiences and learn from each other."I hope that such exchanges will inspire concrete ideas for cooperation and establish long-lasting partnerships," Vassiliou said.The opening ceremony was the first of a series of exchange activities to be held throughout the year in Europe and China. WUHAN, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Monday that Premier Wen Jiabao's imminent visit to Russia and the 15th regular meeting between the Chinese and Russian prime ministers would further promote the bilateral relationship.Yang made the remarks while meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov at the 10th Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of China, Russia and India in central China's Wuhan city.However, Yang did not give a specific date for the prime ministers' meeting in Russia.During his meeting with Lavrov, Yang praised progress of the development of China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination this year. He said China was willing to work with Russia to comprehensively carry out the consensus of their leaders.Next year, the two countries would hold grand celebrations to mark the 10th anniversary of the signing of the China-Russia treaty of good neighborliness, friendship and cooperation, he said.He thanked Russia for its firm support to China on issues related to Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang.Lavrov said Russia placed special emphasis on promoting the bilateral strategic partnership of coordination, and was willing to enhance bilateral and international cooperation with China.Later Monday, Yang accompanied Lavrov to lay a wreath at the tomb of martyrs of the Soviet Air Force who died in World War II.
