After a nearly five-hour delay, the prosecution in Paul Manafort's trial called its first witness of the day on Friday afternoon, with the lengthy delay still unexplained in the courtroom.Judge T.S. Ellis returned to the courtroom at 2:22 p.m. ET, more than a half hour after they were scheduled to reconvene. After conferring with attorneys for the prosecution and defense briefly, Ellis said: "Mr. Andres, you may call your next witness."Prosecutor Greg Andres reminded him the jury still needed to be brought in.The courtroom erupted in laughter.There's has been no word from Ellis or the attorneys about the reason for the long delay.When the trial was supposed to begin at 9:30 a.m. ET Friday, Ellis huddled twice with lawyers for both sides, while the conversation was obscured from the public with white noise. The court then recessed for nearly an hour, before the lawyers and judge returned to the courtroom.Ellis brought the 16 jurors in, stressed to them the importance of not discussing the case and told them to "keep an open mind." He also said the court plans to "continue with evidence" presentations in the afternoon and that he would "expect to make progress."Prosecutors had intended to rest their case on Friday, although that may not happen now with the delay. They expect to call a pair of banking witnesses who were granted immunity to testify and an employee for the New York Yankees.Manafort's case is the first that special counsel Robert Mueller's team has brought to trial, charging Manafort with 18 tax and banking crimes. A Wisconsin man is accused of trying to buy a lethal dose of a radioactive substance on the Internet to try and kill someone. Justin Tolomeo, Special Agent in Charge of the Milwaukee Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a news release Jeremy Ryan, 30, of the Town of Madison has been charged with attempted possession of radioactive material with intent to cause death.Ryan allegedly attempted to buy the lethal dose in March and October of 2018. He was arrested on Tuesday. Ryan, who was dubbed “Segway Boy” faced multiple felony drug charges in 2016. He got the nickname after he was seen riding a Segway around the state capitol in 2011 taunting Republican lawmakers. He also attempted a congressional run against Paul Ryan in 2012. The attempted possession of radioactive material with intent to cause death charge carries a maximum term of life in prison. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Wisconsin’s Western District.  1010

After months of protests, sometimes becoming violent, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler announced Thursday that the city is banning the use of tear gas by his city’s police.Wheeler said everyone has an obligation to create change, and now is the time to change the city’s policy on using tear gas.“During the last hundred days Portland, Multnomah County and State Police have all relied on CS gas where there is a threat to life safety,” Wheeler said. “We need something different. We need it now.“Arson, vandalism, and violence are not going to drive change in this community. I expect the police to arrest people who engage in criminal acts. I expect the District Attorney to prosecute those who commit criminal acts. And I expect the rest of the criminal justice system to hold those individuals accountable. We must stand together as a community against violence and for progress.”The issue of using tear gas amid protests has become a legal battle, as demonstrators say that the use of tear gas to disperse a crowd violates their constitutional rights. In June, U.S. District Judge March Hernandez ruled that the use of tear gas on protesters in Portland could only be used when lives are at risk.The police responded on Thursday by saying gas is a tool needed by officers to control crowds when protests become violent.“Banning the lawful use of CS will make it very difficult to address this kind of violence without resorting to much higher levels of physical force, with a correspondingly elevated risk of serious injury to members of the public and officers,” the Portland Police said in a statement. “CS, while effective, is a significantly lower level of force than impact weapons, which would very likely be necessary to disperse riotous groups with its prohibition. We do not want to use gas. We do not want to use any force.”As to why tear gas is used instead of police going in to make an arrest?“To make an arrest in the middle of a crowd intent on destruction and injuring people, it takes considerable resources--large numbers of officers that we do not have,” the police said. “Not only do we not have enough PPB officers to respond in this manner, our area partners have stated they will not come to our aid, given the climate in Portland.”The city’s downtown has dealt with protests and unrest since Memorial Day following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Adding to the challenges for law enforcement in recent weeks, counter-protesters have arrived and clashed with Black Lives Matter supporters.The unrest culminated on August 29 when Aaron Danielson was shot and killed. The suspect in the case, Michael Forest Reinoehl, was later killed by US Marshals in Olympia, Washington. The US Department of Justice claimed that Reinoehl was a supporter of ANTIFA. The Associated Press reported that Danielson joined the counter-protest as part of a group known as Patriot Prayer, which aligns itself with President Donald Trump and that allegedly shot paintballs at protesters in Portland. 3015

A woman was removed from an American Airlines flight, reportedly because of language on a mask she was wearing.Arlinda Johns shared a video of the incident on her social media accounts at the end of the July. The video begins with her covering her original mask with another one as the plane she is on drives toward the runway.Her original mask read “F*** 12”, and she was asked by an airline attendant to cover it up because of the language.The number “12” in this use is a reference to law enforcement. Johns told Local 10 News she is an “abolitionist” and supports efforts to “defund and abolish the police.”She says after she put on the new mask, the flight attendant returned and told Johns, “I better not see that other mask.” Johns says she responded, “I said, ‘Leave me alone, lady.’ She stood there, she said, ‘okay, I got you.’”“Everything she asked me to do, I did,” Johns said in her video.The video shows the plane driving back to the gate in Charlotte and Johns being asked to leave the plane.During the conversation with security, Johns repeatedly asks not to be called sir and asks for an explanation why she is being removed. The gentleman does not elaborate and only says she has to get off the plane.Once inside the airport, Johns again asks why she was removed. Toward the end of the video, a gentleman escorting her away from the gate tells her she cannot get on another flight that day because of her “disruptive behavior.” 1453
