Gavin Newsom on Monday asked President Donald Trump to approve more housing vouchers as Trump's administration weighs in on the most populous state's massive homelessness problem.Members of the administration visited Los Angeles last week to view the city's sprawling homeless encampments after Trump told his staff to develop policy options to address the national crisis of people living on the streets.The Democratic governor and officials representing California cities and counties sent the Republican president a letter asserting that "shelter solves sleep, but only housing solves homelessness."Their letter asks Trump to provide 50,000 more housing vouchers through two existing programs and to increase the value of the vouchers to account for high rents. That would help "a significant proportion of our unsheltered population," including thousands of military veterans, they wrote.Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, a Democrat, invited Trump in July to tour the city's streets. Russia is threatening action against U.S. media outlets operating there as soon as next week.On Thursday Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in an interview on Russian television that Russia is working on practical steps in response to U.S. government pressure on Russian-government owned media operating in the U.S."I think that our patience that is nearly run out will take some legal shape. I don't rule out it will be done next week," she said in the interview according to the state-run news wire TASS. "As of today, there is understanding that a practical phase of these response measures (in respect of US media in Russia over demands the RT broadcaster register itself as a foreign agent in the US) will begin next week."Zakharova did not specify which outlets would be targeted or what the actions would be. But last month, Russian officials sent letters to news organizations in Russia that are backed by the U.S. government, warning them of possible "restrictions."The comments are the latest in the increasing saber rattling from the Russian government regarding American media operations in Russia. Russian officials say it is in reaction to a request from the Justice Department that the Russian state-funded outlets RT and Sputnik register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) in the United States.RT's network is available on cable in the United States and Sputnik has an FM radio station in the U.S. Both have websites that are accessible in the U.S. Though the United States funds news organizations in Russia such as Radio Free Europe and Current, those outlets are not available on radio or on cable but are normally accessed via the internet.According to RT, the DOJ initially gave it an October deadline to register. RT has said it purposely missed that deadline as it tried to fight against the forced registration. Individuals or organizations that register under FARA are asked to disclose their funding, operations and other information, but are allowed to continue their work. Ronald Gasser will spend the next 30 years behind bars for shooting former NFL star Joe McKnight.Gasser faced up to 40 years in prison after his conviction of manslaughter in January of this year.He was arrested on a manslaughter charge Dec. 5, 2016, a few days after the shooting, and charged with killing McKnight at a busy intersection in Terrytown, Louisiana following a road rage incident.He was later indicted on a second-degree murder charge.During the trial, prosecutors painted Gasser as the aggressor in the deadly encounter.Today, Judge Ellen Kovach said the fatal road rage incident should serve as a cautionary tale.If Gasser and McKnight had disengaged, or if Gasser hadn’t decided to use his firearm, both could have walked away.“This tragedy did not need to happen,” Kovach said.The mother of Joe McKnight's son, Michelle Quick, yelled out that's "less than he deserves." And she cursed as she was escorted out of the courtroom. RIDGECREST, Calif. (KGTV) — A 4.7-magnitude earthquake hit just outside the town Southern California town of Ridgecrest late Thursday.The quake struck near area of Little Lake, Calif., about 20 miles away from Ridgecrest just after 5:40 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. USGS estimated the earthquake's depth at about 1.2 miles.The earthquake could be felt from as far away as Spring Valley, according to the USGS' "Did You Feel It?" map.Several aftershocks were recorded around the area following the 4.7 shake up. No injuries were immediately reported. On July 5, magnitude 5.4 and 7.1 quakes hit the Ridgecrest area, causing millions in damage locally. Those quakes could be felt as far away as Las Vegas. 729
