BALTIMORE — On a cold day in February, Evelyn Businsky was on her couch when the sliding glass door behind her spontaneously shattered."I was glad that the curtain was closed because it just burst out," Businsky said. The inside pane of the door shattered into a thousand little pieces on her living room floor. Her and her husband immediately called the remodeling company that installed the windows and doors about 20 years ago. They chose Homefix Custom Remodeling for their lifetime warranty. An estimator came out the next day but the Businskys say they were unable to get an answer on when the door would be replaced and how much it would cost. The company eventually called the couple to let them know they were going to replace the door at no cost.As for why or how the door shattered, the Businskys figured it was the combination of the polar vortex and the hot air coming from their space heater. However, Mike Geraci, director of marking and business development at Caplan Glass in Baltimore, isn't convinced that's what caused the glass to give out."I doubt very seriously because of the cold weather and heater, looks like five or six feet away, that it caused that door to explode," Gerarci said.He said it could've been stress, potentially some temperature imbalance or the materials inside the glass."One of the ingredients in float glass is nickel alloy, and if there's a large concentration of that particular ingredient in the glass, that could cause the glass to fracture or split," Geraci said. However, this is rare and uncommon."Very rare for that to happen. There's thousands and thousands of tempered glass being produced every hour," Geraci said. And yet, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission received nearly 30 reports in the last six months of shower doors, TV stands, casserole dishes and glass appliances exploding out of nowhere."There's a process called heat soaking where they take the glass, they heat it up and then they put it right into warm water and in that bath any kind of informality in the glass should make it explode in water to prevent it from happening after purchase but it's hard to say. Again, these are very rare cases," he said. When deciding on windows and doors in your home, you do have another glass option. On impact, tempered glass shatters into tiny little pieces while laminated glass splinters but stays in place. These are designed to protect the consumer from being injured. While laminated glass may appear to be a better option to protect against break-ins, tempered glass is actually four to five times stronger. Laminated glass is also typically more expensive, however, it can be replaced faster.Homefix Custom Remodeling said the Businskys door should be ready in six to eight weeks. The couple is happy it's getting taken care of, but the lengthy timeline and fluctuating weather gives them some concern."I have COPD, and if I get a cold you've got to figure it's like somebody else getting pneumonia. And if I get pneumonia, I could die," said Evelyn Businsky.Homefix Custom Remodeling said they're not an emergency glass replacement company and are unable to expedite the replacement. In an email, a spokeswoman for the company wrote: "We are eager to see the door replaced, and are doing all that we can to facilitate that outcome." They also say they tried calling the couple and left a voicemail, but never heard back. The couple disputes this. The CPSC issued a 3453

As parts of Australia continue to burn, many people are being forced to evacuate. In times like this, where many are seeking ways out, some first responders are looking for ways in and actually running toward the chaos.“It’s bad,” said Cody Peel, a fire director with the U.S. Forest Service. “We’re looking at over 26 million acres have burned.”Peel is part of a team of nine federal firefighters going to Australia to join in and help on the frontlines of the bushfires.“It’s what we do,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if the fire is on our soil or in our neighbors. The Australians have come over to the U.S. in recent years to help us when we had a time of need. So, we’re just repaying that debt.”Repaying by helping relieve exhausted crews working down under. This comes after crews from Australia and New Zealand helped with wildfires in Northern California in 2018.Peel and his team are flying into Melbourne where they’ll be met and briefed on fires that have been burning for months, leaving dozens dead, thousands of homes destroyed, millions of acres of burned and more than a billion animals dead. “I’m just one of many that’s willing to run towards the help and offer it any way we can,” Peel said.Over the past few months, more than a hundred federal firefighters from American agencies have gone to Australia to help with the firefighting efforts. And with the dry season starting up, the worsening weather conditions are creating even more challenges.“We’re looking at triple digits daily. They’re pushing 110-115 degrees. It’s incredibly dry,” Peel said. “They’re going through a drought so being able to find water to use to help suppress the fires is going to be a challenge.”Peel and his crew will be gone up to 35 days but say they’re in it for the long haul.“I’m no meteorologist, I’m no climate expert, but everything is pointing this is going to be a long, drawn-out fight,” he said.Responding to an international call for help and running toward the danger while others are looking to leave. 2026

As the White House looks for ways to restore normalcy in parts of the U.S., the government's foremost infection disease expert has a sober prognosis. Dr. Anthony Fauci tells CNN the country could see 100,000 to 200,000 deaths from the coronavirus and millions of infections. He says the pandemic is such a “moving target” that it's hard to pin down such a forecast. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says President Donald Trump refused to acknowledge the severity of the crisis early on. And she says that has cost lives. 525

CANTON, S.D. – No matter where you live in the United States, debt can play a big role in your life. Sarah Woods of Canton, South Dakota, has battled debt nearly her entire life, almost two decades. “Debt seems like almost a constant way of life,” said Woods. But life, some might argue, wasn't fair to Woods.“Within three months I got married, found out I had cancer and also had our first child,” said Woods. “So, you take three of the biggest things that could possibly happen in our life and roll them into your early 20s, I mean you’re going to start out on the wrong foot and since then it’s just been one struggle after another.”Woods and her husband now have three boys and taking care of them isn’t cheap. Woods says some months their pantry's been bare.“To actually have to reach out and say no, we are personally struggling is a hard one,” said Woods.Lori Pudenz helps with the food pantry that's run out of the Canton Lutheran Church, where Woods works. Pudenz says the pantry’s been a huge blessing.“My opinion is nobody should go hungry and that’s what we’re here for,” said Pudenz.Woods' husband is a machinist and she works full-time at the church, but it still hasn't been enough to overcome a mountain of debt that began with cancer at 19 years old.“I couldn’t imagine having an extra in my bank account that wasn’t due to someone else.”Not all of Woods’ debt has come from being a victim of circumstances. She admittedly says she has made some very bad decisions. But what has changed her life is a class on debt taught at the church where she works.“I can see light at the end of the tunnel,” said Woods. “We’re definitely getting there. I’ve been able to learn a lot of different life skills and really face my debts.”And after a full day at work at the church, Woods goes to work at home. She has created a plus size boutique called Becky’s Closet. “The last few months have been tremendous for business. It has created Christmas for us.” 1975

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Friday that it’s unlikely that a single brand is responsible for the outbreak of lung illnesses associated with vaping. As of Wednesday, the CDC says all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands have reported 2,291 patients hospitalized with EVALI, the name given to the mysterious illness. A total of 48 deaths have occurred in 25 states and D.C., according to the CDC. That’s 2% of total reported cases. Since February, the largest number of hospitalized EVALI patients was reported during the week of September 15. Since then, the CDC says there has been a steady decline in hospitalized EVALI patients reported weekly to the CDC.Because most patients reported using THC-containing products before noticing symptom, the CDC recommends that the public not use e-cigarette, or vaping, products that contain THC.While health officials don’t believe one brand is to blame for the outbreak, they say “Dank Vapes” is the most frequently reported product brand, used by 56% of hospitalized EVALI patients nationwide. With that said, the CDC says regional differences in THC products have been noted. TKO and Smart Cart brands were more commonly reported by patients in the West region compared with other regions.“The nationwide diversity of THC-containing products reported by EVALI patients highlights that it is not likely a single brand that is responsible for the EVALI outbreak, and that regional differences in THC-containing products might be related to product sources,” wrote the CDC in a report.Although it appears that vitamin E acetate is associated with EVALI, the CDC says many substances and product sources are being investigated, and there might be more than one cause. Therefore, while the investigation continues, officials say people should consider refraining from the use of all e-cigarette, or vaping, products. 1929
