Many people across the country are full of hope now that a few COVID-19 vaccines are showing positive results, and they appear to be highly effective. But will Americans be willing to get a shot?Before Pfizer, Moderna and Astra Zeneca shared their results, Gallup Economics conducted a poll with Franklin-Templeton on what it would take for Americans to be willing to get a COVID-19 vaccine."We decided to dig deeper to why people are skeptical of a vaccine and see what pieces of information make a difference in effecting their decision in getting it or not," said Jonathan Rothwell, the Principal Economist at Gallup. Rothwell says, instead of a traditional Gallup Poll with multiple choice or open-ended questions, the more than 5,000 people surveyed were broken into groups of 200. Each group was asked different questions, proposing various scenarios and hypotheticals about a vaccine."'Imagine there's a vaccine that's going to be widely available in either', and then we varied the timing to be either the end of this year or beginning of next year. We varied whether we disclosed if it came after the FDA did three rounds of clinical trials or mention it was FDA approved," said Rothwell. People were also asked about how effective a vaccine would need to be and who would have to recommend it in order to take it."I would say the most surprising thing was telling people the Food and Drug Administration approved the vaccine after three rounds of clinical trials had a slightly negative, not significant effect relative to just telling them it's just FDA approved," said Rothwell.The results also showed African-Americans and Hispanics were more skeptical of a COVID-19 vaccine and that most people wouldn't resume activities like going to the store without a mask, traveling, or sending their kids back to school just because a COVID-19 vaccine was available.Dr. Bali Pulendran, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Stanford University, says news about the high efficacy of two different COVID-19 vaccines is extremely positive, but he understands people's hesitations."It's understandable because this is unprecedented, no one has developed vaccines at such warp speed. But, again, it has to be driven by the data and what the data shows us now is that at least in the short term, we have these vaccines that are in excess of 90% effective and safe," said Dr. Pulendran.Dr. Pulendran says just because it took less than a year to develop an effective COVID-19 vaccine, doesn't mean corners were cut to get there."The methods used to make these vaccines have gone through the same high rigorous standards that have always been used to make any number of vaccines that have been administered and that have been proven to be safe and effective. By that, I mean they’ve gone through phase one, phase two, phase three human trials, multiple independent bodies have looked at the data," said Dr. Pulendran.Gallup hopes scientists, doctors and politicians will use the results of this poll to help guide their messaging to the general public so that most people will be encouraged to get a COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available. 3155

MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio — Maple Heights Mayor Annette Blackwell believes northeast Ohio's shortage of affordable housing is having a tragic impact on the academic development of children. Blackwell told WEWS the affordable housing shortage is causing too many families to move from school district to school district and, in some cases, multiple moves are made in one school year.Blackwell said housing insecurity is playing a major factor in hindering the education of children, especially children from African-American families living in Cleveland and the inner-ring suburbs."It is an issue here in northeast Ohio, it is an issue here in the school district in Maple Heights," Blackwell said. "These children have to deal with the stress when they see their parents negotiating with the landlord, they see mom's rejection, they are part of that rejection when the application gets turned down, or the eviction notice comes.""All of these things add to the heightened sense of anxiety and stress. It's overwhelming on a daily basis."Blackwell pointed to a Harvard Medical School?study indicating that multiple moves contribute to a critical loss of learning.Blackwell said too many families simply can't afford to find good, stable housing."They make between and an hour, they have three kids, they have a car they're trying to maintain and they have to work two jobs to do that," Blackwell said.Professor Ronnie Dunn, Cleveland State University chief diversity and inclusion officer, told WEWS the toxic stress caused by multiple moves and a lack of affordable places to live are hurting young children and families more and more."In Cleveland, we average about 11,000 evictions annually," Dunn said. "A lot of that stems from living in inadequate, poor housing. It has a very dire and adverse effect."Blackwell believes possible solutions include creating tax credits to give developers incentives to create new affordable housing, and municipalities and developers working together to re-purpose existing square footage."There's a lot of ugly empty buildings, gut them," Blackwell said. "There are great architects, there's great brain power, great houses, great vision, and turn it into something livable." 2279

(KGTV) — A man police say was captured on video taunting a bison at Yellowstone National Park this week has been arrested.Glacier National Park rangers arrested 55-year-old Raymond Reinke, of Pendleton, Ore., Thursday just after 10:30 p.m.In the video, a man is seen Tuesday in the middle of traffic approaching the bison. He begins the taunt the animal, which becomes visibly agitated and charges the man multiple times.After the footage was shared out, Yellowstone Superintendent Dan Wenk called the man's behavior, "reckless, dangerous, and illegal," on Facebook, adding those who ignore rules for distancing themselves from wildlife risk their lives and threaten the park.Yellowstone requires visitors to keep at least 25 yards from animals like bison and elk, and 100 yards from bears and wolves.Tuesday's incident wasn't Reinke's first recent run-in with law enforcement either, according to police. He had reportedly been visiting multiple national parks over the last week.On July 28, he was arrested by law enforcement at Grand Teton National Park for drunk and disorderly conduct.He then traveled to Yellowstone, where his vehicle was stopped by rangers on July 31. He was cited as a passenger for failure to wear a seat belt, after rangers said he appeared drunk and argumentative, the park said.It's after this incident the park said they believed Reinke encountered the bison.Rangers investigating the video believed Reinke to be behind the incident and had his bond revoked and an arrest warrant issued.Rangers began searching for his vehicle, and he was located at Glacier National Park. Rangers there had received a call of two hotel guests creating a disturbance and identified one of the guests as Reinke.He was booked into Yellowstone Jail to await a scheduled court appearance Friday. 1842

Mental health has become a priority for many people across the country during the pandemic. For college students, it's no different, and many are hoping employers put mental health as a priority when they graduate."As they stress about whether or not they’re going to find internships, whether or not they're going to find employment after they graduate, as they think about their own families, as they think about their health or the health of their loved ones. Everything is just compounding and we wanted to get a better sense of whether students were actively thinking about mental health," said Christine Cruzvergara, the VP of Higher Education and Student Success at Handshake, which connects college students with employers.Cruzvergara says realizing these struggles, Handshake surveyed more than 1,000 college students about their mental health."Over 62% of our students want employers to think about mental health benefits as actually part of the compensation plan and I think that’s a huge shift. We didn’t see students talking about mental health as a benefit previous to COVID," said Cruzvergara.Roughly half of students surveyed said they were concerned about their own mental health with so many people working remotely, adding they were concerned about feeling isolated and about their work-life balance."We've shared this with our employers as we continue conversations with them about how they're going to adapt their training, their onboarding, their compensation," said Cruzvergara.More businesses are also thinking about mental health services for their employees, according to Gympass, a service used by employers to offer benefits like fitness and nutrition programs. Gympass surveyed its own members and found 69% have experienced burnout during the pandemic."We know 95% of people are just aware that wellness in general is more important to their productivity and as employers have become more aware of that we’re seeing the shift to mental wellness awareness, in particular, and we’ve been able to embrace this from a live classes perspective moving into digitals where yoga, people can take their meditation classes online," said Gympass CEO Marshall Porter. Porter says while most employees and employers realize mental wellness is important when it comes to productivity at work, just 34% of employers are actually offering those types of benefits."And so how do we think about and talk about meeting the customer, the employee, where they are. Everybody’s aware, everybody wants that benefit. Too few employers are still thinking about that and so opening that conversation of how are you really doing, what can we do to provide that. Maybe it isn’t that traditional 401k or new stipend to work from home and make your home office more comfortable," said Porter.Realizing the major impact companies can have on their own employees' mental health. 2884
