SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Monday evening, a city official put inspection tags the doors of the Barrio Logan warehouse where a platform collapsed this weekend, injuring 21 minors and a few adults. It happened Saturday night at Vault PK parkour gym on Main Street. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Most above-ground power lines in San Diego may soon be gone.The City of San Diego has an aggressive plan to move the lines underground, and they want your input at a meeting next week.People in Ocean Beach aren’t looking forward to the headache during construction, but can’t wait until the power poles are gone.Wayne Samuel works at Ozzie's Import Auto in Ocean Beach. The process to move utility wires outside his business underground has already begun.“So far they’ve taken underground connections from building to power grid,” said Samuel.A map of the plan shows there are 1,000 miles left to transfer underground. The city plans to bury 15 miles a year.The project will be funded by a surcharge on your SDG&E power bill that you’ve been paying since 2002. The city says you won’t see an increase in your bill, even though the price tag is in the billions.The reason for going underground? Fire safety and aesthetics.“I think it’s a good idea getting billboards and power lines out of the visible view of the public,” Samuel said.Arthur Harral has lived in Ocean Beach for more than 40 years. He’s dealt with the pre-construction and paid for the surcharges, but doesn’t mind.“It’s a wonderful deal. In some states across the country, in Colorado, they have them underground, and I’m all for it in San Diego,” said Harral.Construction will last 18 to 36 months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Poway residents are once again voicing displeasure with the owner of the now-closed Stoneridge Country Club. Thursday, crews from Big Trees Nursery began removing dozens of trees from the property."I couldn't believe it," neighbor Brian Edmonston told 10News. "I thought it was outrageous and it was a cruel thing to do."In 2017, owner Michael Schlesinger backed a ballot measure which would have allowed him to build more than 100 condos on the land.  The day after Poway voters rejected the plan, Schlesinger closed the club.Poway City Councilmember Barry Leonard told 10News that because the land is private property and the trees being removed are not "native trees", Schlesinger is within his rights to remove and sell the trees.Leonard also said that because Schlesinger terminated water service to the property, he would rather see the trees removed than die. 908

With that, the questions and concerns about what that means for drivers out on the roads.“I think we will see an increase in DUI marijuana’s,” said Officer John Perdue, a San Diego Police officer in the traffic division.Perdue is an expert at DUI and drug recognition. Since November 8, 2016, when California voters approved Prop. 64, or the adult use of marijuana act, he’s been hearing the same thing when he comes across drivers he suspects are driving high.“Their first reaction is one of two, either A. ‘I have a medical marijuana card’, or B. ‘marijuana is legal.’ And I have to remind them, so is alcohol, but you still can’t drive under the influence of it,” Perdue said.How exactly will police be able to tell if someone is driving high?One tool that officers will use to help is the Drager Drugtest 5000, a presumptive drug screening test that can detect seven types of drugs in a person’s system.Like an alcohol breathalyzer, Perdue said, “the person has every right to refuse this.” But unlike alcohol, it doesn’t have a percent limit.If the Drager reads positive, Perdue said, “it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re impaired or under the influence, it just says that chemical or drug is in their body.”  So to be arrested for DUI, it’s still up to the officer to decide if the driver shows impairment.But that can be tough. Look at the Drager as an extra tool that’s used along with field sobriety tests, what an officer smells, sees or finds in the car, to formulate that officer’s opinion of whether a driver is high.“The hardest thing will be, because there is no per se limit right now, the officers are really going to have to be aware of the signs and symptoms,” Perdue said. 1808

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — New studies are showing that one of the most important risk factors for COVID-19 is weight, including for children.People who are obese are more than twice as likely to wind up in the hospital with COVID-19 as those with normal weight, and 48 percent more likely to die from it, according to a study last month that looked at hundreds of thousands of patients.“Some people have made the argument that the deaths from COVID are just in people with preexisting conditions. Well, this is a preexisting condition that affects a third of the U.S. population in the obese range and another third in the overweight range,” said Dr. Christian Ramers of Family Health Centers of San Diego. “So it’s extremely common.”More than 71 percent of adults are either overweight or obese, according to the CDC. Adults are considered overweight if their body mass index is 25 or higher, and obese if their BMI is 30 or higher.The U.S. has one of the highest rates of obesity in the world, and some experts have theorized it’s one of the reasons why the virus has hit our country harder than others.The risk extends to children as well, who are generally spared from severe cases of COVID-19. Among children hospitalized with the disease, 38 percent had obesity, by far the largest risk factor, according to a CDC study.But what is it about fat that makes the virus worse?There are several theories. People who are obese have blood that clots more easily, one of the main ways COVID-19 kills. Fat cells secrete tiny proteins that cause inflammation, another huge problem with COVID patients that can spiral out of control in what’s called a cytokine storm.Overall, obese people have weaker immune systems.“The theory is that the fat is taking over in certain parts of your body that normally are producing white blood cells,” said Dr. Marsha Blount of Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Center.Extra fat on the abdomen makes it harder to get air into the lungs, exacerbating conditions like pneumonia. And the extra weight makes it harder to use a ventilator, said Dr. Ramers.On top of all that, people with obesity frequently have other underlying conditions.“Hypertension, diabetes, obesity, fatty liver -- these things are all associated with each other,” Dr. Ramers said. “What we’ve seen is that each of them is related to a poor outcome with COVID.”Studies have shown that simply being overweight increases the risk of COVID-19. A study of nearly 17,000 hospitalized patients in the U.S. found that 29 percent were overweight and another 48 percent were obese.The encouraging news, according to Dr. Blount, is that losing just 5 percent of your weight can have significant benefits. Dr. Blount teaches other physicians how to talk about weight loss with a technique called motivational interviewing.“That 5 percent has been proven time and time again to decrease the risk of getting diabetes. It decreases breast cancer risk for females. It lowers triglycerides and improves HDL, which are different lipid numbers and that thereby decreases your risk of stroke and heart attack,” she said.It can also reduce blood pressure, another major risk factor for COVID, suggesting a little weight loss can go a long way. 3215
