HONG KONG — Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam says the government will postpone highly anticipated legislative elections by one year, citing a worsening coronavirus outbreak in the semi-autonomous Chinese city. The Hong Kong government is invoking an emergency ordinance in delaying the elections. Lam says Hong Kong's government has the support of the Chinese government in making the decision. Hong Kong has had a surge in coronavirus infections since the beginning of July. The postponement is a setback for the opposition, which was hoping to capitalize on disenchantment with the current pro-Beijing majority to make gains. Pro-democracy lawmakers have accused the government of using the outbreak as an excuse to delay the elections. 742

General Motors has already announced plant closings and big job cuts. Ford could be next.Ford (F) said this summer that it was planning to radically reshape its business, and could close or scale back unprofitable operations in some regions. It said it would spend up to billion on the transformation.The company has revealed little detail about its plans. Adam Jonas, the auto analyst at Morgan Stanley, said he believes Ford is preparing to slash 25,000 jobs worldwide. He expects that most of the cuts will be in Europe, where Ford has long struggled, but he said North American plants and workers won't be spared.Like GM, Ford is reinventing itself to compete in an industry undergoing radical change. GREELEY, Colo. — A Colorado woman says she was denied a haircut at a local Great Clips because her baby son was not wearing a mask.Meri Smith decided she was finally ready to get a haircut. It would have been her first one since the COVID-19 pandemic reached the U.S. in March.She made an online appointment at Great Clips, and when she went to the salon to check-in, she was told that her son "can't come in" to the building."They said you can't come in because he's under two and he can't wear a mask," Smith said.Smith said she was confused and humiliated by the situation. As a teacher, she's familiar with Colorado's statewide mask mandate and she knows it doesn't apply to children who are 10 and younger."I just felt rejected. It made me sad and uncomfortable that I couldn't go get a haircut just because my son was a baby," Smith said.A spokesperson for Great Clips released the following statement from Michelle Iacovetta, the COO of Holtzman Enterprises, Inc. and a Great Clips franchisee."Holtzman Enterprises, Inc. does not require children under two years of age to wear a mask in our salons, following guidance from the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics. For many students, the isolation can be devastating.But one Colorado school is bringing people together and preventing bullying in a unique way.A table brought students Sydney Martin and Mirsadys Wilson together.“I came over here and I just wanted to make sure she was OK,” says Martin. “And I instantly saw the quote and I looked at her piece and I was like, ‘Dang.’”The quote reads, “Be kind.”It inspired martin to sit with Wilson, who was eating alone.“She was just like being really supportive,” says Wilson. “So, I was like, ‘wow, girl’s cool.’”That's the point of the Together Table--to make inclusion and connection easy.People at the National Mall in DC added the positive messages on the table. Then, the table was gifted to Central High School in Pueblo, Colorado by the No Bully Organization.“At first, they were a little timid. They weren't sure what it is,” says assistant principal Zach Odell. “They saw these little stools and all this riding on it and they didn't quite know what to take, because they're just used to being in their comfort zone. But once they really got going with the table, it turned out pretty good.”Odell says it's helps make lunch time less isolating, especially for students who may be bullied or excluded.“This table eliminates that you can't exclude somebody from sit with you because of the way this table is shaped,” Odell says.He and students say its open design makes meeting new people less intimidating. 1576
