and report the crime to Cleveland police. On Oct. 16, officers responded to the 1700 block of East 12th Street after receiving a report of a woman who might be involved in a human trafficking case, police said. The woman, who is from Gambia, told police that she was sold to a family as a laborer to take care of a sick and elderly woman from Kuwait.According to the woman, she had been living with the family for the past four years in Kuwait and on Aug. 12 traveled to Cleveland with the family because the elderly woman required medical treatment at Cleveland Clinic. While speaking with police, the woman told officers that the family had been keeping her locked in an apartment at Reserve Square in the 1700 block of East 14th Street. She said that she never had the opportunity to report her situation to police or escape before because the family was either around or, if they left, they would lock her in a bedroom in the apartment. On Oct. 16, the family left her locked in the bedroom and left the apartment around 9:47 p.m., and for the first time she was able to escape, police said.In addition to contacting police, the woman was also able to get in contact with a victim advocate in Arizona. Officers contacted the advocate to get a better understanding of the situation because the woman’s English was very limited, according to police. While talking with the advocate, officers learned that the woman was in fear for her life and said that she didn’t want to go back to the family that held her captive and that she fears going back to Gambia because she believes she will be killed, police said. When officers investigated the apartment the woman said she was being held in, they found that it was vacant, but the smell of hookah was prominent in the empty space, according to police. While with the officers, the woman began receiving multiple calls from a phone number she said belonged to the family that held her captive. When asked, she was only able to provide police with a description of the elderly woman she said she was purchased to care for, police said. The woman was transported to a local organization where she is being given shelter and resources, according to police. The incident remains under investigation. This story was originally published by 2276

as part of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's ongoing investigation into clergy abuse within the Catholic Church.Father Joseph "Jack" Baker was arrested Monday morning in Wayne County. He was charged with one count of criminal sexual conduct first degree — sexual penetration with a person younger than 13.According to a release, Baker has been a pastor at St. Perpetua Parish in Waterford, Michigan, since 2008. Prior to that, Baker was a pastor at St. Mary Parish in Wayne, associate pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Dearborn and associate pastor at St. Hugo of the HIlls Parish in Bloomfield Hills. The Archdiocese of Detroit reported a tip to the lead prosecutor on the investigation, resulting in the charge.“This is just the tip of the iceberg,” Nessel said. “Our clergy abuse investigative team is working day and night to review the hundreds of thousands of pages of documents and files seized from all seven of Michigan’s dioceses last fall. At the same time, we continue to receive calls daily from victims who know we will listen to them, believe in them and investigate their allegations. They deserve nothing less than our very best.”Baker’s arrest follows Nessel’s May 24 announcement that five former priests had been charged with 21 counts of criminal sexual conduct. The men, who were all priests when the reported crimes were committed, are:? Timothy Michael Crowley, charged in Washtenaw County with four felony counts of CSC 1 and four felony counts of CSC 2. Crowley was arraigned June 29 in Washtenaw County; a probable cause conference is scheduled for July 30. ? Neil Kalina, charged in Macomb County with four felony counts of CSC 2. Kalina was arraigned June 20 in Macomb County; a probable cause conference is scheduled for July 9.? Vincent DeLorenzo, charged in Genesee County with three felony counts of CSC 1 and three felony counts of CSC 2. DeLorenzo was arraigned in Genesee County on June 18; his probable cause conference is scheduled for August 1. DeLorenzo is out on bond.? Patrick Casey, charged in Wayne County with one felony county of CSC 3. Casey waived his preliminary exam and is scheduled for arraignment July 18 in Wayne County 3rd Circuit Court. Casey is also out on bond.? Jacob Vellian, charged with two counts of Rape. The AG’s office is pursuing extradition of Vellian, who lives in India. This story was originally published on 2385

is a necessary part of a child's life. But try telling that to Marie Dellafranca, vice president of South Shore Villas Condominium Association at West Babylon, Long Island. On May 20, she sent a warning letter to condo owners Robert and Angelica Parker. Their 4-year-old son Liam loves riding his tricycle and scooter around the grassy triangle in front of their unit."We understand that the weather has gotten nice out but unfortunately, there are rules and regulations in the By-laws," the letter read. "That it is not safe for kids to play on common area grounds. Please take this as a precaution measure so that we would not have to enforce the fine that is association with this. It is 0 per violation."The Parkers looked through 38 pages of the association's by-laws, but didn't see any prohibiting kids from playing outside. They asked Dellafranca to show it to them. She couldn't.Dellafranca later said they received complaints from one condo owner about the children of three families playing outside in a "noisy fashion." The Parkers said the two other families told them they hadn't received a letter from the condo board."It makes us question why he's the only one, considering other children play outside here all the time," said Robert Parker, who works in law enforcement. "He also happens to be the only Latino child. So that raises questions about the possible motive for something like that."Angelica Parker, Liam's mother, is from the Dominican Republic.Vincent Dellafranca, the husband of the South Shore Villas Condominium Association vice president, denies the letter was sent based on the boy's race."Don't make it racial," Vincent Dellafranca told reporters. "Everybody else was told the same thing, and they follow the rules."That's not true. Robert Parker has pictures of other family's children playing outside with Liam.Vincent Dellafranca also claimed the by-laws were written by the New York State Attorney General's office. When asked why children were not permitted to play outside, he cited the rules set up by the AG."We just follow the rules. We don't make them," Vincent Dellafranca said.A staffer for the attorney general's office denied that it had passed such a regulation."The Office of Attorney General does not have oversight of Condo by-laws," the staffer said. The Dellafrancas say they are concerned about the safety of the children playing and other members of the condo community."What if they hit somebody when they're riding or they run into somebody's car by accident?" Marie Dellafranca said.Vincent Dellafranca claimed the children ride their bikes in the condo parking lot. Not true, says Angelica Parker."I'm constantly with my son making sure he doesn't go near anyone's cars," she said. The Parkers have filed a discrimination complaint against South Shore Villas with the New York State Human Rights Division."There's nothing wrong with a child playing outside. It's part of living in a condominium. This isn't an over 55 or a senior community. Children should have the same rights here as anyone else," Robert Parker said.Liam's ability to continue riding his tricycle outside, like any other 4-year-old child, now depends on the findings of a state inquiry. You might just need to walk into a Walmart to experience a Christmas miracle. In recent weeks, anonymous good Samaritans have paid off all layaway items in four Walmart stores in different parts of the country -- a total of more than 0,000.Julie Gates got an unusual surprise in early November when she walked into a Walmart in Derby, Vermont. A man waiting at the register offered to pay for everything she had bought and had on layaway --?and did the same thing for most customers in the store. This mystery man, who called himself "Santa," was apparently the first in a string of similar random acts of kindness in Walmarts across the United States. Since then, Walmart customers at stores in New York, Colorado and Pennsylvania discovered that their bills were taken care of and their layaway items had been paid for.All the mysterious Santas have chosen to remain anonymous -- and each has been generous in their acts of kindness.A Walmart spokesman confirmed to CNN that an anonymous donor paid for ,000 in layaway items at a Uniondale, New York, store while another spent ,000 in a Longmont, Colorado, store and a third shelled out ,000 at a Walmart in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Secret Santas have visited Walmart in seasons past, too. In 2016, a Santa paid for almost ,000 in layaway items at a store in Everett, Pennsylvania."When customers quietly pay off others' layaway items, we're reminded how good people can be," Walmart spokesman Payton McCormick said. "We're honored to be a small part of these random acts of kindness."McCormick said he doesn't know what's behind all the generosity but suspects it has something to do with the holidays. The store in Uniondale posted a picture of all the receipts from the unknown customer's act of kindness."Thank you again on behalf of the Uniondale community," the store posted on Facebook.Walmart shopper Lisa Mcmillan, who according to her Facebook profile lives in Longmont, says she was "blessed by some Christmas angel.""I had been freaking out about Christmas and not being able to get my kids presents, as I am a single mom of 5 at the moment," she posted on Facebook. On November 29, she said she received an email from Walmart that her layaway account of 0 had been paid for by an anonymous person."I pray to God that whoever did this is reading this right now...You have absolutely no idea what you did for me and how much of a burden you lifted off my shoulders," she said. 2486
