SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County officials are warning that the county could move into a lower, more restrictive COVID-19 tier, but explained if it does happens the shift wouldn't happen overnight. In just one week, San Diego County's COVID-19 case rate per 100,000 residents is up from 5.8 to 6.9. The positivity rate is also up from 3.4% to 4.2%.These two metrics determine whether or not the county moves up or down on the state's new colored tier system. The positivity rate is low enough to move the county from the red to a less restrictive, orange tier. The case per thousand rate is moving the county closer to going from red to purple, the tier with the most restrictions. County officials explain moving up or down from a tier would only happen if there were two consecutive weeks of data in one specific tier. The increased positive cases among students at San Diego State University could have an impact on the state's increasing numbers. As of Wednesday night, there are 440 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and four probable cases. Just last week, the campus only had 20 cases. On Wednesday the county also talked about a discrepancy with testing data, saying the state is not getting the county's correct testing numbers. Dr. Wilma Wooten couldn't say how many tests aren't being recorded properly but says the county is working with the state to resolve the issue in the next two weeks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police have released a sketch of an attempted homicide suspect they say tried to rob a man at Emerald Hills Park last month.On July 11 at about 2 p.m., a 23-year-old man was at Emerald Hills Park when an unknown suspect tried to grab his cell phone from a park table. A fight started between the man and suspect before the suspect displayed a box cutter and told the man, "I am going to kill you," police said.The suspect stabbed the man in the left arm with the box cutter and strangled the man, before fleeing the scene. The suspect was last seen walking into a canyon near KeltonRoad and State Route 94.The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and was treated for the cut to his left arm requiring 18 staples.The suspect was described as a Black male, about 40 years old, standing about 6-feet tall, and weighing 170 pounds. He has a thin mustache and goatee, and had "Jaundice" or yellowing to the white portion of his eyes, police said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County is seeing far fewer influenza cases at this point in the flu season compared to last year, due in part to coronavirus-related safety measures, according to public health officials.So far this season, the county has recorded 39 influenza cases, compared to 1,220 cases at this point last season. Flu season generally runs from October through May, with flu activity peaking in December and February.The county says it's "very likely" physical distancing, hand washing, and mask-wearing are contributing to the low flu activity."Influenza activity remains very low to date this season in San Diego County. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported 625 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, the region's second-highest daily increase of cases reported by officials.San Diego County's new cases reported a 6% positive rate out of 10,290 tests. Of the county's cases, 2,180 (9.4%) have needed hospitalization. Health officials add that 2.5% of all cases and 26% of hospitalized cases have been moved to the ICU.An additional six deaths due to COVID-19 were also reported, the county said. The deaths occurred between July 8 and July 16, and included four women and two men whose ages ranged from 60 to mid-90s. All had existing chronic conditions, the county said.
