LHASA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed in a strong earthquake that jolted a county near Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, on Monday, the rescue headquarters confirmed early Tuesday morning.     The previous "at least 30" death toll was inaccurate due to unauthoritative sources and needs further check.     Rescuers arrived at Yangyi Village, the worst-hit site in Gedar Township of Damxung County, late Monday night after repairing the road once paralyzed in the 6.6-magnitude tremor.     At least 147 houses in Yangyi and villages in a neighboring county collapsed. Rescuers recovered nine bodies from the debris, and 11 people were seriously injured while eight others received light injuries, Hao Peng, deputy chairman of the autonomous regional government and head of the rescue command, told Xinhua.     More than 600 soldiers, police officers, firefighters, traffic, medical and geological experts were rushing to the quake zone.     Food, drinking water, tents and other materials had been transported to the area. Rescue operation was underway. The injured were being sent to local hospitals.     An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted Damxung,82 km from Lhasa, at 4:30 p.m. Monday. TAIYUAN, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang underscored the scientific outlook on development and production safety during an inspection tour to northern Shanxi Province on Wednesday and Thursday.     Zhang visited the site of the Sept. 8 landslide in Xiangfen County on Thursday morning, where an unlicensed iron ore tailings pond burst and killed at least 262 people.     "The September 8 landslide was a very serious production safety incident, causing great losses, having a bad impact and leaving a deep lesson," he said.     The vice premier said a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident should be conducted and that those responsible for it should be punished seriously in accordance with law.     A lesson should be drawn from the incident and people should be put first, he stressed, adding that more efforts should be exerted to crack down on unlicensed production and corruption behind production safety incidents.     He also demanded local authorities have a scientific outlook on development.     Production safety should be strengthened through more investment, scientific and technological progress and better management, the vice premier said.

BEIJING, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, the Cabinet, has started the first-class national food safety emergency response to deal with the tainted Sanlu milk powder incident that has caused kidney stones in at least 432 babies.     The State Council has set up a national leading group comprising officials from the Health Ministry, the quality watchdog and local governments for the incident.     A preliminary investigation has confirmed the Sanlu baby milk powder contaminated by melamine was the cause of kidney stones in infants, said an official statement released here Saturday evening.     The melamine substance found in some of the Sanlu products was deliberately added to increase the protein percentage in raw milk or milk powder, it said.     The statement said the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council attached high importance to the issue, urging all-out efforts in treating the affected babies. The patients will be given free medical treatment and the cost will be shouldered by the government.     Meanwhile, the State Council urged a thorough overhaul of the milk powder market, directing the Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) to join other departments to check all the brands of baby formulas circulating in the market, and immediately pull those disqualified products off shelves.     The reason why the Sanlu baby formula was contaminated must be found out as soon as possible, the State Council said, directing the local government and relevant departments to overhaul all the links including the milk powder production, cow raising, raw milk collection and dairy processing.     Based on the findings, the criminals and all those responsible would be severely punished, it said.     Relevant local government and departments should draw lessons from the incident and improve the food safety and quality supervision mechanism to ensure the food safety of the public, it added.     The State Council has directed the provincial government of Hebei, where the Sanlu group is based, to halt production of the group. An investigation team set up by the health ministry and other departments is also in the province to probe into the cause, and the quality watchdog AQSIQ is conducting an all-round overhaul of baby milk powder producers across the country
