SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Brendan Watters had big plans for Ballast Point the moment his company took control March 2. That includes creating new beers, and driving a wrapped bus around San Diego for two months announcing that the iconic craft brewery was back under local control. All of that hit a snag two days after sale closed, when Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a State of Emergency because of the coronavirus outbreak. "So basically a week after we were closing up operations," said Watters, the brewery's CEO, who moved to San Diego after the sale. "We had to pivot straight away."Watters' company, Kings and Convicts, bought Ballast Point from Constellation Brands, a Fortune-500 beverage company that paid billion for the San Diego brewer in 2015. Watters declined to disclose the sale price, but did confirm it was less than billion. He said Ballast Point, which launched in San Diego in 1996, lost some of its local charm under an international brand. He says he plans to bring that back, with two new beers launching this summer and an emphasis on design, such as the famous oceanic art that accompanies each one. Still, he faced an unprecedented challenge two days after closing. The tap rooms all shut down, eviscerating 50 percent of its revenue (Watters estimates total revenue fell as much as 60 percent). Watters says the brewery focused on its distribution, and was aided by a federal stimulus loan. Now, the Miramar and Little Italy tasting rooms are reopening with social distancing alterations, such as spaced out tables, and smartphone ordering systems. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Customers at two Walmart stores in the North County say they received hundreds of dollars in fake bills.Last Thursday night, Billy Wagner went to the Walmart on Center Drive in San Marcos and cashed out a ,000 money transfer from a friend on the east coast."Watched the lady count the money on the counter three times," said Wagner.On the same night - and about five miles away in Escondido - John Whittingham stopped by the Walmart Neighborhood Market on East Valley Parkway to cash a check, receiving four 0 bills. "You won't believe it. These two 0 bills are counterfeit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities Monday identified a man who died after falling from an East Village building he was trying to paint with graffiti. Alejandro Vazquez Paz, 28, died after falling from a building on the 1500 block of E Street, according to San Diego County’s Medical Examiner. The incident was reported around 8:30 in the morning after transients in the area flagged down police, leading them to the abandoned building. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Customs and Border Protection officers say more than 300 pounds of drugs were seized from a truck at the Otay Mesa cargo port of entry this week.CBP officers say a tractor-trailer truck was stopped on Thursday at about 7 a.m. The driver was carrying a shipment of recycled cardboard, CBP said.The truck was referred to an imaging scan and exam, where an anomaly was detected in the truck's cab.CBP says officers removed 64 packages from two duffel bags hidden inside a sleeper compartment: 59 containing 286 pounds of methamphetamine and five bags containing 26 pounds of fentanyl.The narcotics, and tractor-trailer were seized and the driver, a 36-year-old Mexican citizen with a valid B1/B2 border-crossing card, was turned over to ICE and booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center to face federal charges."Even in the midst of a global pandemic, we continue to see attempts to move hard narcotics across the border and into U.S. communities," said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California Highway Patrol is investigating after a man was shot while driving on Interstate 8 Saturday night. According to CHP, the shooting happened on I-8 near Waring Road around 8:30 p.m. CHP says an unknown vehicle began firing rounds at the victim. According to CHP, the suspect fled the scene in an unknown vehicle and has yet to be located. The victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.
