Consumers are looking for greater protections for their personal and financial information in the wake of the Equifax data breach. Many have decided to take precautions and put their credit on ice: a credit freeze.A credit freeze aims to block anyone from opening new accounts in your name. The catch is that the block applies to legit inquires, too. So it's not a great idea if you're shopping for a home or an auto loan. But when you're not looking to take out any loans or open any lines of credit, it can be a financial lifesaver.The Equifax hack, in which the names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, and driver's license numbers of 143 million people were exposed, may create a new normal in which protections previously viewed as cumbersome -- like credit freezes -- are now a valued line of defense."A security freeze is the most effective measure against 'new account' identity theft, because it stops thieves from using the consumer's stolen information," says Chi Chi Wu, a staff attorney at the National Consumer Law Center.Here's what you need to know about freezing your credit:What is a credit freeze?A credit freeze limits who can see your credit report information. The goal is to prevent anyone from opening any new accounts. It doesn't damage your credit or stop your credit report from evolving by your own actions.Your credit information will still be released to your existing creditors and any debt collectors who may come calling.But, if you want to open new lines of credit, you'll need to lift the freeze first. This can be done temporarily, either for a set time or for a particular party, like a landlord or lender.The costs to freeze and lift the freeze on your credit vary based on where you live and for each credit reporting agency, but commonly range from to per agency.If you're a resident of certain states -- like Maine or South Carolina?-- it's free.In response to public outcry, Equifax announced that fees to freeze your credit will be waived for the next 30 days.But even that doesn't totally protect your information since your data isn't fully frozen until it is on ice at all three credit bureaus. The other bureaus have their own fees. It's also unclear whether Equifax would still charge you a fee to lift the freeze. The company did not immediately respond to request for comment.Consumer protection organizations like the National Consumer Law Center are further calling for Equifax to waive the fees for credit freezes at all three credit bureaus.How is it different from fraud alerts or other credit monitoring?The credit reporting companies do little to make getting a credit freeze easy: you have to ask each of them individually, pay a fee (usually) to put it in place, ask each of them specifically to lift the freeze and often pay another fee. That's because your data is the product that they sell to other people and companies. If you freeze it, it isn't as valuable.As such, they are more likely to offer you fraud alerts and other credit monitoring products. These are services that will let you know when someone is looking at your credit and may contact you about a new account opened in your name. It's helpful, but it is often after the fact."Equifax is offering something that it says functions like a credit freeze," says Mike Litt, consumer program advocate with US Public Interest Research Group. "The problem is that it is incomplete protection and it only lasts for a year. What we're recommending is that people don't bother with the package Equifax is offering and just place freezes with the three credit bureaus instead."Can I still get a credit card or loan?Sure. When your credit is frozen you can continue to operate your financial life just as you typically would. The only notable thing is that you will need to notify the credit bureaus to lift the freeze before you ask a lender to approve you for credit.If you are able to determine which credit agency your potential lender is using to run your credit, you can even save yourself some fees by just requesting the freeze to be lifted on that one.The reporting agencies tell you that this may delay a legitimate credit request.But for those who don't feel comfortable with the way the credit reporting agencies are handling their treasure trove of personal information, a notification to the agencies and day or so delay may be a fair price to pay for added security.The agencies advise you to plan ahead and lift a freeze a few days before actually applying for new credit.How do I freeze my credit?With millions of people feeling vulnerable after the hack and scrambling to secure their most important information, getting a credit freeze has been more difficult than usual in the past few days. Users on Twitter report trying again and again to secure credit freezes, with both the website and phone systems failing.Keep trying.To set up your own credit freeze, go to the freeze page at each credit agency's website individually: Equifax, TransUnion,?Experian.You will be asked to provide information. One professor seems to think so, colliding head-on with consumers who believe it's good for them.In her lecture at the University of Freiburg -- entirely in German and posted in July -- professor Karin Michels, of the university's Institute for Prevention and Tumor Epidemiology, calls the health claims surrounding coconut oil "absolute nonsense" and says it's "pure poison" for its saturated fat content and its threat to cardiovascular health. The video of her lecture has amassed close to a million views and counting."Coconut oil is one of the worst things you can eat," Michels said.While others have taken a more measured view, they hardly buy into the ballyhoo. A 2016 survey in the New York Times suggested that 72% of Americans think coconut oil is healthy, versus only 37% of nutritionists polled."There are many claims being made about coconut oil being wonderful for lots of different things, but we really don't have any evidence of long-term health benefits," said Dr. Walter C. Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where Michels is also an adjunct professor."Coconut oil is somewhere in the middle of the spectrum in terms of types of fats. It's probably better than partially hydrogenated oils, [which are] high in trans fats, but not as good as the more unsaturated plant oils that have proven health benefits, like olive and canola oil," Willett previously told CNN.Health organizations tend to discourage the use of coconut oil, which is more than 80% saturated fat. The American Heart Association says it's better on your skin than in your food, and it recommends that no more than 5% or 6% of your daily calories come from saturated fats -- about 13 grams per day. The association also advocates replacing coconut oil with "healthy fats" such as polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats, like those found in canola and olive oils, avocados and fatty fish.Coconut oil is "probably not quite as 'bad' as butter but not as good as extra virgin olive oil," Kevin Klatt, a molecular nutrition researcher at Cornell University who is studying the metabolic effects of coconut oil, previously told CNN.Klatt cautions that we should not develop too strong of an opinion of it without more data. "But at the same time, you have to be evidence-based ... and [currently], the evidence reflects benefits for olive oil, fish, nuts and seeds -- so that should be the focus in the diet."Coconut oil is extracted from the meat of the fruit. It contains mostly saturated fat, which is also found in large quantities in butter and red meat. Like other saturated fats, coconut oil increases LDL cholesterol, commonly known as "bad" cholesterol, which has been associated with increased risk of heart disease.But coconut oil also raises HDL, the "good" cholesterol, especially when replacing carbohydrates in the diet. This may be due to its high content of a fatty acid known as lauric acid. (This is also noted in Michel's statement summarizing her talk.)"Coconut oil is half lauric acid, which is a little bit unique," Klatt said, as the acid seems to raise HDL more than other saturated fats and is rarely found in such high amounts in foods.Still, though the increase in HDL seen with consumption of coconut oil may offset some of the disease risk, it's still not as good as consuming unsaturated oils, which not only raise HDL but lower LDL, according to Willett.Complicating matters is the fact that we still don't know for sure what exactly a high HDL translates to in terms of health risk. "There's been debate about the role of HDL," Willett cautioned. "Partly because there are many forms of HDL which have different health consequences ... which has made the water murky."For example, there are different forms of HDL that do different things. One role is to help take LDL cholesterol out of the bloodstream. "But some forms of HDL don't do that," Willett said, "so we don't know for sure that higher HDL is better."While an elevated LDL level is used as a marker for predicting cardiovascular risk and doesn't always translate to heart attacks, experts say it's still cause for concern.Research has found a mixed bag when it comes to saturated fats, and coconut oil in particular. A 2015 Cochrane review found that cutting back on saturated fats also lowered the risk of cardiovascular disease by 17% -- but it didn't change the risk of dying, and there was no benefit to replacing these fats with protein or starchy foods.Other research specifically on coconut oil has explored its effects on metabolism, appetite and cognitive function -- but "you can't infer from ... studies what coconut oil will and will not do. We need better controlled trials," Klatt said."Right now, the internet is jumping the gun and going way beyond the evidence."Like other oils, coconut oil is calorie-dense, which means consuming large amounts without reducing other calorie sources can lead to weight gain. Just one tablespoon has 120 calories, about the same as a large apple or four cups of air-popped popcorn."Oil is a really easy way to increase the energy density of a food. Things like almonds have a lot of fat, but it's easier to overeat pure oil than overeat pure almonds," Klatt said.In small amounts, however, coconut oil can have a place in one's diet. But for day-to-day use, experts recommend vegetable oils such as olive, canola or soybean oil, along with nuts and seeds, as a primary source of fats in the diet."It's not that you have to absolutely avoid coconut oil, but rather limit coconut oil to where you really need that special flavor, like for Thai food or for baking a special dessert," Willett said.Klatt agreed, saying that coconut oil "is certainly fine to consume occasionally, when a recipe calls for it."The-CNN-Wire 5933

And then you feel guilty," said Aldean. "Those people are there to see your show so that's awful."Since that dreadful night in October, Aldean has struggled with the complexity of his feelings about surviving the country's deadliest mass shooting in modern history.  "And then you start doing that thing, like, 'Man, did that really happen. Did that really happen to us?' It seems so crazy. Like how could that even be a thing?"Aldean said his wife and crew were a great comfort to him, but it was visiting the injured in the hospital and the birth of his son that put things in perspective. "That helped. Going back to the hospital, going back to Vegas and seeing those people. Seeing some of the strength they were having," said Aldean. " People laid up in the hospital and smiling and laughing and just being glad they were alive."His son was born exactly two months after the Las Vegas shooting."Really to me, he just gave me something else to focus on. Now, some of these companies are getting creative with hiring during the pandemic."This is about actionality and giving everyone whatever ways that are necessary to them to be able to find work. Our teams have been trying to come up with creative ways to connect people and work," said Carl Schweihs, the president of PeopleManagement at TrueBlue, a national staffing company that helps businesses, big and small.Schweihs says their team decided to try out a drive-thru hiring event. TrueBlue is running the events through its Staff Management |SMX business."We did one of these in April in Pennsylvania, and we saw a lot of success, so we were able to hire about as many people in one day as we had done in a week in the past," said Schweihs.The company saw so much success that True Blue decided to offer the drive-thru service to other clients, as well."We saw a lot of people were interested in it. They weren’t used to necessarily video interviewing and there was a comfort factor in still being close to someone, still being able to ask questions, that just weren’t there on the video side," explained Schweihs.How it works is applicants fill out all of their information ahead of time online. Then, True Blue schedules certain times for people to drive up and interview through their car window. Schweihs says they're able to interview more candidates in less time."Another thing is, we do interviews on all of our jobs and I think it also shows, especially in warehousing and distribution jobs attendance is a big issue, so by people being able to show up to an interview at a scheduled time, it also gives comfort in us and our customers that they're going to show up and be in attendance when they actually do take the job," said Schweihs.Drive-thru hiring is gaining ground across the country. In California, the Tulare County Employment Connection is hosting its first drive-thru event to fill 40 electrical and solar installation positions."I'm a little bit old fashioned. I like the face-to-face, and I know a lot of people do. Just the safety matter of it right now during the pandemic, following safety guidelines, I think it's a very good idea to be able to drive through and make it quick, where there's not very much contact, but at the same time, you're having that face to face with employers," said Monica Andrade, a business resource specialist with Tulare County Employment Connection.Andrade says employers will also have an opportunity to have a more in-depth interview with some candidates by having the candidate pull over and conduct a socially distant interview outside in a separate area.
