Beijing, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Officials from 28 countries across Asia and the Pacific gathered Thursday in Beijing for a high-level meeting on cooperation on children's rights in the Asia-Pacific region.Anthony Lake, executive director of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), called for collaboration among Asia Pacific countries in protecting children's rights in a speech delivered at the meeting.Lake said,"We are already seeing the benefits of cooperation in areas that cut across borders, from preventing the spread of disease, to addressing the effects of climate change, to increasing child protection, to improving education."During the three-day meeting, more than 180 representatives from 28 countries in the Asia-Pacific region are expected to discuss issues on children's welfare and protection and the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), these being eight global anti-poverty objectives due to be accomplished by 2015.The meeting, scheduled from November 4 to 6, is hosted by the All-China Women's Federation, the National Working Committee for Children and Women under the State Council, China's Ministry of Commerce, and with support from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan Monday pledged to work with Cuba to lift the friendly bilateral relationship to a new level.Wang made the remarks while meeting with Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, Vice President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba.Cabrisas is in China to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations.Cuba was the first Latin American nation to forge diplomatic relations with China, in 1960.Wang spoke highly of the development of China-Cuba ties over the past half a century, noting that the two countries have always supported each other and enjoyed frequent high level visits.China will work with Cuba to expand win-win cooperation and strengthen economic and trade links with a view to further advancing bilateral ties, Wang said.Wang said China will continue to help Cuba within its capacity.Cabrisas thanked China for offering economic and technological assistance to his country.He said Cuba will make concerted efforts with China to promote pragmatic cooperation in various sectors while pushing forward the existing sound bilateral relationship.

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Monday met with nearly 60 foreign political leaders and scholars on the eve of a forum to discuss global trends and common challenges.The forum will take place in Beijing on Tuesday and Wednesday and is organized by the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC),the country's top advisory body.The forum's theme for its fourth conference is "new era, new challenges, new vision -- building a future for all.""It is significant for the 21st Century Forum to hold a conference on the global situation, challenges and visions," Jia, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, said.More than 100 officials, scholars and business executives from home and abroad will attend the two-day conference of the 21st Century Forum.As the world has been undergoing deep changes, transformation and adjustment, it is imperative for all countries to be interdependent, reform the international financial system and build a justifiable and reasonable world order, Jia told the foreign attendees to the forum.Among the foreign attendees are some well-known dignitaries, including former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former European Commission President Romano Prodi, former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, former Russian Prime Minister Evgeni Primakov, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.Jia briefed foreign leaders on China's economic and social development, stressing China remained the world's biggest developing country despite its economic boom."It will take China decades of unremitting efforts to accomplish modernization," Jia said, adding China would adhere to the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics.Jia said China would continue to pursue peaceful development and develop friendly cooperation with all countries in accordance with its independent foreign policy.Jia reaffirmed China's efforts to play its due part in dealing with global challenges and contributing to world peace and development.Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo called for all countries to pursue a path of cooperation and common prosperity.After the meeting, Jia also hosted a welcome banquet for forum attendees.The 21st Century Forum convened its first conference in 1996. BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) - China's State Council, or the Cabinet, unveiled a set of guidelines Wednesday, aiming at helping reconstruction work in landslide-hit Zhouqu County in Gansu Province.The guidelines affect taxation, finance, education and employment policies in the region which was devastated by the massive mudslide on Aug. 8.The document clarified that funds for the reconstruction would come primarily from central government subsidies.It said that priority would be given to rebuild damaged residential houses, public services, infrastructure and prevent the spreading of diseases.It specified tax reduction measures for enterprises and individuals who had organized and collected donations, and encouraged banks and financial institutions to increase loans to the mudslide-hit areas.Land required for housing, infrastructure and reconstructing public facilities will be allocated by the local government, according to the document.Local governments or universities have also been directed to financially assist Zhouqu-born college students, while high-school students in the landslide-affected areas have been exempted from paying tuition fees, the document said.A massive mudslide triggered by rainstorms slammed Zhouqu county in northwest China's Gansu Province on Aug. 8, leaving 1,472 dead, 294 missing and more than 15,000 people homeless.

ROME, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- China and Italy enjoy a good foundation for cooperation and China would like to expand that to other areas such as trade and investment, environment and culture, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Thursday.
