ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego County’s largest ice-skating facility is closing for good.Officials with Ice-Plex Escondido announced Thursday that the facility, located on 555 N. Tulip St., is shutting down effective immediately.Since 1995, Ice-Plex was a destination for San Diegans looking for a place to ice skate or play hockey. The facility, with its two Olympic-sized ice rinks, offered classes and public ice skating sessions that ran 7 days a week.In a statement on their website, Ice-Plex officials said, “This was not an easy decision. Our hockey and skating communities have been strong partners to us throughout the years, and we have worked hard over the last few months to find an alternative way to keep the facility open. Unfortunately, that solution has not emerged.”Officials said the facility has been operating “at a substantial loss” in the past few years, and they’ve struggled to maintain the equipment and other systems needed to keep the facility running.The pandemic-related closure also affected the facility’s ability to stay afloat, and despite numerous efforts, officials could not find ways to keep the Ice-Plex open.“We close our doors with a heavy heart and would like to extend our deepest thanks to our athletes, customers, staff and volunteers, who have been responsible for creating a welcome and competitive environment at Ice-Plex. Faculty members at Lehigh University have voted overwhelmingly in favor of rescinding President Donald Trump's honorary degree.Trump was presented with the honorary degree in 1988, when he was chosen by the graduating class as commencement speaker. It was standard for all commencement speakers to be given honorary diplomas at that time, Lehigh spokesperson Lori Friedman told CNN.More than 80% of voting-eligible faculty affirmed the?motion asking that the Pennsylvania college's Board of Trustees revoke the honor. Only 14% voted against the motion. It will now be conveyed to the board, according to Faculty Steering Committee Chair Doug Mahoney.Dr. Michael Raposa, who helped to draft the motion, told CNN that it was intended to reflect that faculty members "don't want Lehigh to be identified with the kind of sexist, racist, and Islamophobic utterances" he says the President has made. The motion was not meant to serve as a comment on Trump's political views or positions, he said."We did not want this to be a debate about politics," he said.Raposa told CNN he felt the results of the vote represented the "clearly articulated voice of the faculty."The faculty motion was preceded by two petitions, including an online one?that garnered more than 30,000 signatures. It's a condition that can lead to permanent damage if not caught early."If we can screen these children before their eyes mature they can be treated and prevent visual loss," said Dr. Cano.That's why Dr. Cano says you shouldn't put off a visit to the eye doctor because of the pandemic. There are tools available to keep kids safe."One of the nice devices that we use, which I happen to have with me, is this device," Cano said. "It allows us to be over six feet away from the child."Keeping social distance while keeping eyes healthy, Florida Society of Ophthalmology also offers resources for quick and easy at-home vision tests to help parents and guardians whose children might be spending more time at home.Miller's daughter is two now and doing just fine with her glasses, and they're grateful to have caught the issue early."Incredibly grateful," said Miller. "I'm a special educator. (KGTV) - A local driver is warning of an unusual encounter with a dark SUV Saturday night on a North County freeway.Dashcam video captured on Interstate 15 shows an SUV with a light bar across the top. The driver tells 10News she initially thought it was a police vehicle and then spotted the back windshield, which was lit up by blue lights that resembled audio levels.Not long after, she says she heard a siren noise coming from that same SUV, as it approached a red light.MAP: Track crime in your neighborhood10News showed the video to CHP officer Jim Bettencourt who said he believes the blue light, the light bar, and siren are all vehicle code violations."If they were utilizing that to get people to move out of the way or caused a crash that would be another slew of charges," said Bettencourt.Bettencourt said because the SUV didn't have a symbol representing law enforcement, the driver wouldn't face an impersonating an officer charge. 972

(KGTV) -- Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred during a traffic stop in Escondido early Friday morning.The incident happened at around 3:45 a.m. on Broadway, near Washington Avenue, according to Escondido police.Police said officers were initially called to a home in the 300 block of Park Avenue due to a reported restraining order violation. In the call, a woman said her former husband, 44-year-old Rosendo Sandoval Quezada was at her home and she identified his vehicle.On Broadway, an officer spotted a white car being driven by Quezada and pulled him over.According to police, Quezada "exited his vehicle holding a 3-foot long crow bar and ran toward the officer."Police confirmed the situation prompted the officer to fire multiple shots. Quezada was struck in the abdomen, and he was transported to Palomar Hospital for treatment of his injuries.Police said the officer, who was not injured in the incident, is a 4-year veteran of the department. A lieutenant at the scene told 10News he believes this was the first time the officer was involved in a shooting. The officer was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.According to police, the officer’s body camera was active during the incident.A stretch of Broadway at Washington Ave. was closed for several hours due to the probe. 1364
