SAN DIEGO — Small business owners across San Diego are bracing for a new round of Coronavirus restrictions. And some say they'll have to fight them in order to survive. The movement into the state's purple tier would block restaurants, nail salons, estheticians and gyms from operating indoors - a change that some say would spell the end of their businesses."If we're forced to close again we may permanently have to close our doors," said Todd Brown, owner of Bub's at the Beach, in Pacific Beach. "It's tough for us, 22 years later I never anticipated that we'd be fighting for our lives, and that's where it's at."Bubs can only fit 9 tables on the street, so Brown is bracing to defy the order. He says otherwise food expires, equipment languishes and bills pile up."I know for a fact if we follow it then I'm done," he said. "We have zero chance of success that way, so which way would you go?"The local economy continues to be hit hard by the pandemic.Joblessness remains at 9.9 percent with more than 154 thousand unemployed San Diegans. But not every restaurant is in such dire straights. At City Tacos, owner Gerry Torres says the fast casual eatery has been able to make the most of the outdoor space in front. He's all right with the new tier."As a community, as San Diegans, we should support it, because that's only going to keep us safer," Torres said. Torres says local governments have really stepped up to help small businesses, a resource he says has proven vital 1487

SAN DIEGO (AP/KGTV) — Unlike most Californians, people in San Diego will be able to get a reprieve from the heat this Labor Day weekend by heading to movie theaters and dining inside a restaurant. Among California’s 10 most populous counties, San Diego is the only one with virus cases low enough to meet state standards for reopening theaters, museums and gyms, and resuming indoor dining — all with limited capacity to provide for physical distancing. San Diego County is listed in the state's second tier, or "substantial" tier, for cities reporting four to seven daily coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents and a positive test rate between 5% and 8%.As of Thursday, San Diego’s case rate is 5.8 and the testing positivity percentage is 3.8%. Since one of those metrics is in the second tier, the county isn't eligible to begin the 14-day countdown to qualify for the next tier of easing restrictions.Local officials say an aggressive reaction to outbreaks and a bipartisan approach have helped the county deal with the pandemic. While San Diego County has kept case rates low, the county reported two new outbreaks — in a business and in a restaurant/bar — on Thursday for a total of 17 community outbreaks in the last week.Officials warned this week that Labor Day weekend poses a threat to those gradually decreasing metrics and encouraged residents to be safe and avoid gatherings over the holiday weekend. 1422

SAN DIEGO — Todd Brown doesn’t hold back when he talks about the impact Coronavirus restrictions have made on his bottom line.“It’s been basically devastating to us,” he said.Brown owns multiple restaurants in San Diego - including Bub’s in Pacific Beach. This past Fourth of July weekend was not what he was hoping for.“With the holiday weekend, our numbers, they were tremendously disappointing,” Brown said. It's going to get worse before it gets better. That's because Brown is going to have to shut down his indoor service for three weeks,Along with a variety of other business owners in the county. The county made the Governor’s monitoring list for three days in a row, meaning restrictions are going into effect at restaurants, tasting rooms, breweries, entertainment centers, zoos, theaters and card rooms for the next three weeks.“I say we are going back instead of forward,” said Patrizia Branchi, who owns Operacaffe downtown.Branchi said business has really suffered during the pandemic - with sales down to 35 percent. These new restrictions still allow her to serve customers outside - but with social distancing rules, her patio only holds six people.“I don’t want to think about closing because to me that means my family is going to have a problem,” Branchi said. “I have me and my daughter, and the other partner, which is with us since ever. What do we do?"And to make matters more difficult, Brown and Branchi both say they have all but exhausted their Paycheck Protection Program funds - meaning they won't have any stimulus money to get them and their workers through this new round of closure. 1621

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A statue of former California Gov. Pete Wilson has been removed from a San Diego park after critics said the governor supported laws and policies that hurt immigrants and LGBTQ community members. The 13-year-old statue near Horton Plaza Park was removed by Horton Walk, the nonprofit that owns it. Earlier this week, Latino and gay rights groups held a news conference in front of the life-sized bronze sculpture calling for its removal. Sean Walsh, Wilson’s law partner and former chief of staff, said the statue was a recognition of the governor’s 50 years of public service. 602
