GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) — The man who killed four people and wounded two others in random stabbings across two Southern California cities is a gang member with a violent criminal record who had served time in prison, authorities said Thursday.Zachary Castaneda "could have injured or killed many other people" had he not been arrested Wednesday while carrying out attacks and robberies during the two-hour wave of violence that began in Garden Grove, the city's police Chief Tom DaRe said.It wasn't immediately known if Castaneda, 33, had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf. He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday.Castaneda was taken into custody when he walked out of a convenience store in the neighboring city of Santa Ana, dropping a knife and a gun he had taken from a security guard he had just killed, police said. The suspect was covered in blood, DaRe said.Castaneda was kept in restraints as detectives tried to interview him, the chief said at a press conference."He remained violent with us through the night," DaRe said. "He never told us why he did this."Castaneda has a conviction for possession of meth for sale while armed with an assault rifle, DaRe said. Investigators were still putting together his entire criminal history, he said. Officials didn't specify what crimes sent Castaneda to prison or when he was released.The violence appeared to be random and the only known motive seem to be "robbery, hate, homicide," Garden Grove police Lt. Carl Whitney told reporters.Whitney said police had previously gone to Castaneda's Garden Grove apartment to deal with a child custody issue. The suspect's mother had been living with him and had once asked police how she could evict her son, he said.The attacker and four of the victims were described as Hispanic, while two victims were described as white, police said in a statement. Initially, all had been described as Hispanic. There was no indication this was a hate crime, DaRe said.The two people who were wounded were expected to survive.One of the dead was identified by his son as a hard-working immigrant originally from Romania.Erwin Hauprich said in a telephone interview that his father, Helmuth Hauprich, 62, called him Wednesday afternoon and told him his Garden Grove apartment had been burglarized. The father said his passport, green card, sword collection and even a dining table were taken.Erwin Hauprich said his father never called back and he went to check on him after hearing there had been a stabbing at the complex.A police officer told him that Helmuth Hauprich had been taken to the hospital, where he died, the son said. He said he was told his father's roommate was killed in the apartment.A body was removed from the complex by stretcher Thursday.Erwin Hauprich said his father left Romania first for Germany and then the United States more than two decades ago. He said his father worked on an assembly line and lived in the complex for years.He said Helmuth Hauprich was a down-to-earth man who strove to make a life for his family.Police said surveillance cameras caught some of the carnage."We have video showing him attacking these people and conducting these murders," Whitney said.Whitney said the man lived in a Garden Grove apartment building where he stabbed two men during some kind of confrontation. One man died inside and the other at a hospital.Whitney said a bakery also was robbed.The bakery owner, Dona Beltran, said she was sitting in her car charging her cellphone when she saw a tattooed man get out of a Mercedes and go inside the business. Beltran, 45, followed him inside to offer help, but kept quiet when she saw him trying to open the cash register.She then ran out of the shop and yelled she was being robbed before taking refuge in a nearby dental office, she said. He ended up taking the entire register with him, which had about 0, she said."I saved myself because I was in the car," she said in Spanish on Thursday. "Thank God I am alive."The man also robbed an insurance business, where a 54-year-old employee was stabbed several times and was expected to survive.The woman "was very brave," Whitney said. "She fought as best she could."An alarm company saw the robbery on a live television feed and called police.The man fled with cash and also robbed a check-cashing business next door, the lieutenant said.Afterward, the attacker drove up to a Chevron station, where he attacked a man pumping gas "for no reason," Whitney said.The man was stabbed in the back and "his nose was nearly severed off his face," the lieutenant said.Undercover detectives tracked the suspect's silver Mercedes to the parking lot of the 7-Eleven in Santa Ana and within a minute the man emerged from the store, carrying a large knife and a gun that he had cut from the belt of a security guard after stabbing him, Whitney said.Police ordered the man to drop his weapons and he complied and was arrested.Police then learned that a male employee of a nearby Subway restaurant also had been fatally stabbed during a robbery, Whitney said.The brutal and puzzling attack came just days after a pair of mass shootings in Texas and Ohio left 31 people dead and stunned the nation.___Associated Press reporters Robert Jablon, John Antczak and Christopher Weber contributed from Los Angeles 5309

(AP) — The Arizona Coyotes have renounced their rights to their top 2020 draft pick after learning more about his bullying of a Black classmate four years ago.The team parted ways with Mitchell Miller after taking heat for selecting him in the fourth round earlier this month despite knowing of his 2016 assault conviction.Arizona acknowledged it knew about the incident when it selected Miller.President and CEO Xavier Gutierrez said discovering more about it, and the effect it had on bullying victim Isaiah Meyer-Crothers and his family led to this decision."We have decided to renounce the rights to Mitchell Miller, effective immediately," said Gutierrez in a press release. "Prior to selecting Mitchell in the NHL Draft, we were aware that a bullying incident took place in 2016. We do not condone this type of behavior but embraced this as a teachable moment to work with Mitchell to make him accountable for his actions and provide him with an opportunity to be a leader in anti-bullying and anti-racism efforts. We have learned more about the entire matter, and more importantly, the impact it has had on Isaiah and the Meyer-Crothers family. What we learned does not align with the core values and vision for our organization and leads to our decision to renounce our draft rights. High school graduates who didn’t complete a federal financial aid application missed their opportunity for part of .6 billion in free money for college, according to NerdWallet’s annual analysis of federal financial aid data.The money went unclaimed by 661,000 members of the Class of 2018 who were eligible for a federal Pell Grant but didn’t complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. GLEN BURNIE, Maryland — Two kennel owners are facing dozens of charges after several dogs were found neglected in their care, and one of them had to be put down. On March 20, Anne Arundel County Police say they got a complaint about Olympian Kennels, a company that was supposed to be training and caring for dogs. Some of the dog owners were concerned after they could not reach the kennel's owners, Rebecca Wolfe or Cameron Whitaker-Nelson. In addition to not being able to reach the owners, there were concerns raised after Wolfe posted a message on social media saying Animal Control had taken all of the animals in her care and custody, but Animal Control had not done that.After an investigation, police found six dogs in the basement of Wolfe and Whitaker-Nelson's home on Shade Drive in Glen Burnie. Two of the dogs were severely weak and sick. The basement where the dogs were kept smelled of ammonia and fecal matter. One of the two sick dogs was having trouble breathing and had to be put down shortly after going to the animal hospital. The five other dogs were returned to their owners following a checkup from a veterinarian. The adventures of Maizie Rai with her human best friend Fiona Dawson are well documented on social media, their story is now intertwined with this house.“I had to sit there and watch them take dogs out of their house but not my dog," said Dawson."  I don’t know where she is I don’t know where her body is I don’t know anything.”Dawson's story lines up with numerous other's who have reached out about neglect at this home.The couple used to work for Jessica breeding at Premier Dog Training and Boarding.Wolfe worked the front desk and Whitaker-Nelson was a trainer, Breeding said she trusted them initially.Putting dogs into trainers homes to acclimate is how most dogs complete their training.Breeding got suspicious when a service dog in training named King died in the couples care and the couple refused to get a necropsy done. "After two weeks we were asking her for the results she wouldn't’t give them to us,” said Breeding.  “I ended up calling the vet and they said no necropsy was ever done. It was a battle to try to get the body from the vet for me to actually get a necropsy done. We found out that the dog had passed because of negligent circumstances.”Around that time Dawson started to get worried about Maizie Rai.ABC2 got emails that show an agreement with the couple Dawson met through Premier Dog Training.Dawson had to travel a lot for much for work, so the couple would take in Maizie Dawson would pay for her food, medicine, and give the couple 0 a month.Wolfe and Nelson would take care of Maizie long term and Dawson could set up visits.“I picked her up and she seemed to be doing great,” said Dawson. “She was socializing with other dogs which was quite unusual for her because she had such anxiety when she was with me. I really kind of felt like she was having a better life with them then she was with me."That was the last time Watson saw Maizie Rai.She said for two months the pictures were replaced by excuses and then nothing.“Throughout all this time never in my mind did I think that she wouldn’t be alive,” Dawson said. Dawson and Breeding went to the house to figure out what was going on, no one answered.Anne Arundel County Police and Animal Control joined them,that's when the couple finally came out of the house. “I say "Hi Cameron here for Maizie Rai". In front of the police and animal control.  Cameron looks me in the eye and says "Fiona we texted you a couple of months ago not sure if you got it or not but Maizie Rai died". I just lost it, and screamed and cried almost hyperventilated.  We then sat back and watched animal control take dogs out of their house.”Dawson has no idea where Maizie Rai's body is.This is also not the first time there have been complaints against the two kennel owners. There have been two prior complaints made in May of 2017 and January of 2018. The investigation is still ongoing and can result in additional charges. Anyone with information is asked to contact Animal Control Officer Wolfe at 410-222-3929 (no relation to suspect Rebecca Wolfe).We were able to reach Whitaker-Nelson on the phone, he said he had no comment and that he didn't know what was going on.Wolfe and Whitaker-Nelson have each been charged with 40 counts of animal cruelty. 4506

GREENCASTLE, Indiana — Protesters at DePauw University in Indiana interrupted a press conference meant to discuss recent racist writings on and near campus, one day after students demonstrated at an on-campus event led by actress Jenna Fischer. After five incidents of racial slurs were written across campus in the last two weeks, protesters interrupted actress Jenna Fischer's talk Tuesday night. On Wednesday, university officials held a press conference to discuss the incidents and Tuesday's protest. About 10 minutes into the press conference Wednesday, DePauw President Mark McCoy learned about protesters outside the doors, wanting inside. McCoy and the other officials allowed the protesters inside, where they chanted, "Meet our demands. We are not safe." For about 20 more minutes, McCoy and the group discussed the incidents, and what the university is doing to stop future incidents from happening. "We are all together addressing every issue that has happened on this campus," McCoy said. "We are committed to addressing these issues. DePauw has made so many efforts to address this and has still fallen short."McCoy eventually became visibly frustrated by the interruptions from the crowd.Fischer was on DePauw's campus to promote her book, "The Actor's Life: A Survival Guide."Watch the full press conference, protest and discussion in the video below.
