LAKEWOOD, Ohio — When she heard Jimmy Adkins was running his own taxi service in Ohio she immediately warned her friends and family."We want people to know that he's out there," said a witness who did not want to be identified.That's because the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department says Adkins is a registered sex offender. One that's been convicted twice, in his most recent crime involving a young relative."My niece was living with him and that's when he made the attempt to have sex with her," said the witness.Adkins is running a service called Lakewood Smart Taxi.He needs a license to run his service, but he doesn't have one. Just last month, he got arrested for transporting passengers without it.But even if he applied for that license, there's no way Adkins could get one."That's the thing, within the city's ordinance, they require that you have a clean record," said Derrick Russell, a consultant of Ace Taxi, a legitimate taxi company in Cleveland.Five years ago Russell fired Adkins because of his criminal record."I was shocked, I've done investigations for insurance companies for a number of years and major companies, I had not seen a record like that," said Russell.He says Lakewood Smart Taxi isn't the first of its kind."Anyone can put a magnet on the side of their car and call themselves a taxi because unfortunately, the regulations are really gray in that area, but the other thing is there is no enforcement," he said.The family of Adkins' victims is advising against getting in his car."Lord knows what he can do, and it's just not safe, it's not safe, you know what I mean there could be anything that could happen," said the unidentified witness.Adkins was contacted multiple times for comment but never called back. 1765

(KGTV) – Leslie Furcron, the woman who was shot in the face with a bean bag round during a May 30 protest outside of La Mesa police headquarters, addressed the media Wednesday.The 59-year-old Furcron and her attorney, Dante Pride, are slated to hold a press conference at 10 a.m. in La Mesa."I'm a law-abiding citizen," said Furcron in her brief statement to reporters. "I never came out here that night [La Mesa protests] for this to be a part of my story."Furcron was released from the hospital on Tuesday after having been placed in a medically induced coma with a breathing tube.She was initially hospitalized after a La Mesa officer fired a bean bag round into a crowd of protesters. Furcron was struck in the forehead.Her attorney described the bean bag as a canvas sack filled with buckshot, or lead pellets.It's unclear at what range Furcron was struck but her attorney said,"she was too close for them to use that round if it sticks in your forehead."Furcron was among the thousands of people in front of the police department, where a demonstration against police violence started peacefully later turned to chaos and officers began to deploy tear gas and bean bag rounds.LMPD Chief Walt Vaquez said last week that the incident was under investigation and the officer involved had been identified. Vasquez issued the following statement Wednesday:"I am sincerely thankful that Ms. Furcron has been released from the hospital and is able to now heal at home with her family. There's lots of palm trees, flowers and grass, all taken care of by the inmates. Here, they say, is opportunity to change your life."I was a month and a half pregnant when I got arrested, so I spent my whole pregnancy in jail, I gave birth in jail, she's with my parents, she's almost four years old," Kanya Arredondo said of her daughter Danya.She was locked up for a 5 year sentence for transporting illegal drugs."I missed everything, her first words, her first walking...I get 2-3 visits per week with her on the video screen," at Las Carolinas Kanya says they have a "Facetime machine".She said the atmosphere at the new facility allowed her to have a connection with her daughter, and the deputies who encouraged her to change.She's been taking classes, learned English and is on the Dean's List. She has a job ready when she gets out in 34 days."I don't ever want to come back to this place, even though, it's jail, and a lot of positive things came out of here, I still don't want to come back, at least as an inmate," she said she volunteered to start a Spanish book club to help other inmates follow her path to rehabilitation.Another inmate, Holly Combs, transitioned from the old facility to the new one as well."It's like a fight or flight situation... It's amazing how the trauma you just got used to it," Holly said referring to fights and drugs overtaking the cells.She said it all started when she lost her brother during a robbery. She felt responsible and turned to drugs, landing her behind bars. "My behavior started changing, i started taking every class, I take college courses here I'm on the dean's list and have a 4.0," she said.Her life changed when she came to Las Colinas' new facility."It just took someone to believe in me you know?" Holly said. She's out in about 50 days and has a job ready on the outside."There's a lot of programs here, if you want it you can have them... I could cry, I owe a lot to this place I really do.. I didn't think I could change and the whole way I think is different now." (KGTV) -- La Mesa officials Tuesday released documentation which details the May 30-31 protests that evolved into riots, looting, and property destruction in the city.City officials said they released their timeline as part of a “commitment to transparency.” According to officials, the timeline of events is “primarily based on law enforcement incident logs throughout the day.”In the document, officials noted the La Mesa Police Department and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office were aware of rallies scheduled around the county for May 30 and began their preparations for potential protests on May 28.A peaceful rally with about 200 protesters took place May 29 outside of La Mesa police headquarters, with a larger event planned for the following day.Police worked with sheriff’s officials and the California Highway Patrol to oversee the May 30 protest.READ: La Mesa protest turns violent with fires, lootingAccording to the timeline of events, a peaceful protest began in the city just after 2 p.m. About 90 minutes later, the city informed residents via a Nixle message and tweet of the protest’s impact near University Avenue and Baltimore Drive. Residents were urged to avoid the area.By 3:30 p.m., protesters made their way onto Interstate 8, forcing the closure of eastbound traffic.According to the city’s timeline, at around 4 p.m. “a group of protesters on the freeway began getting more aggressive. Some protesters began throwing bottles at officers stationed on the westbound side of the freeway. Officers watching a protester’s Instagram Live video heard her announce that they were going to raid Walmart at the Grossmont Center mall; a group jumped over the wall into the center near the Game Stop.”Meanwhile, 1,000 people marched on Murray Drive and about 200 protesters gathered outside a LMPD station at the Civic Center.Authorities began receiving numerous calls of protests “morphing into violence and destruction,” including a 911 caller who reported she “was struck in the face by a protester in a restaurant parking lot.”City officials said an order to disperse was given to those gathering at the La Mesa police station just after 4:45 p.m. However, the city’s timeline noted, “In the next several minutes, a riot begins to take shape, with the U.S. flag in front of the police station set on fire, people throwing rocks at the building and at officers, and vandalism of the station. A police vehicle is attacked at the intersection of Baltimore and University.”The police station’s front doors are reinforced by the LMPD Special Response Team. Responding sheriff’s deputies “are greeted with rocks and water bottles being thrown by rioters. One deputy is hit by a rock,” according to city officials’ timeline.Through the rest of the evening, sheriff’s officials called on other law enforcement agencies to assist with the growing unrest. “Over the course of the event, approximately 250 officers from jurisdictions throughout the county are deployed to assist La Mesa. The Bearcat and other police vehicles are attacked and vandalized with officers inside. With rocks going into the broken Bearcat windows, officers are forced to deploy a pepperball to free the vehicle and officers.”About 30 minutes later, tear gas is deployed and pepperballs are used “as rock-throwing and destruction continues unabated.”As efforts to disperse the crowd continue, a fire station is attacked.According to the city, dispersal orders were given at all protest locations around the city at around 6:40 p.m., with San Diego police’s ABLE helicopter helping to deliver the orders.“With rioters not heeding the dispersal orders, officers continue to deploy gas and pepperballs in an attempt to disperse crowds. Individuals break into City Hall. There is an apparent arson attempt at the American Legion (VFW) hall and the U.S. flag in front is set on fire. Two squads are deployed from Command Post 2 to form arrest teams. When they arrive, their cars are attacked,” the city’s timeline said.At around 7:35 p.m., ABLE reported that “City Hall appears to be on fire,” and officers were sent to the building to disperse crowds and secure the facility.City officials said it was around 8:16 p.m. when “a beanbag round is fired from approximately 40 yards away toward a woman (later identified as Leslie Furcron) who was observed throwing an object an object at SDSO deputies.
