SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - A rare and beloved family tortoise disappeared from a Santee backyard, possibly grabbed by a thief.Along Jeremy Street, one fenced yard feels especially empty."Heartbroken. My whole family is heartbroken," said a tearful Melanie Clark.Shelly, a 20-year-old leopard tortoise, disappeared about three weeks ago. Clark and her husband returned home from a trip and opened the sliding door but Shelly never came in. Days before returning, Clark says her daughter put down some lettuce on the backyard patio. The couple discovered it half-eaten, which was odd. Usually, Shelly comes back and finishes it.Still, Clark wondered if Shelly wandered off. "We checked all along the fence and saw no gaps," said Clark, who believes it all adds up to a thief."I'm just afraid that somebody saw her and said, 'What a beautiful animal, and I want that beautiful animal,'" said Clark.The foot-long, ten-pound tortoise is unique in its yellow-and-black coloring and origins. "She was one of the last South Africa tortoises to be imported into the United States," said Clark.Clark purchased Shelly at a local pet store before a 2001 ban on the importing of leopard tortoises to the U.S. They were banned because of a certain tick the tortoises may carry.The tortoise, native to Africa, is sensitive to cold temperatures."I'm just worried about not being kept warm. We bring her inside when it's cold. We use special lights and heat to keep her warm," said Clark.She made a plea to the person who took Shelly."Please bring her home to us. She's not just a tortoise. SEATTLE (AP) — One of two people hit by a man who drove his car onto a closed Seattle freeway and into a crowd protesting police brutality has died. A hospital spokeswoman said 24-year-old Summer Taylor of Seattle died Saturday evening at Harborview Medical Center. Officials say Taylor and 32-year-old Diaz Love of Portland, Oregon, were hit by the car that barreled through a panicked crowd of protesters on Interstate 5 early Saturday morning. (KGTV) — Cameras caught a thief wreaking havoc at an East County business park, culminating in several destructive acts after he realized he was locked in.Scott Trafton has seen the video countless times, but his emotions have yet to lessen."Aggravating and makes me angry," said Trafton, who owns XP Builders.Just before midnight last Thursday night, a truck is seen driving into a business park on Wheatlands Court. The truck, believed to be a Chevy Silverado, is parked in the dark for more than four hours, before a man emerges and heads toward Trafton's general contractor business. In the video, the man grabs items from the truck bed, before prying open a toolbox in the back. A knife at this side, the man would get away with more than a thousand dollars with of Trafton's tools. "It hurts being a small business. Every penny counts," said Trafton.Trafton is not the only victim. The thief left behind a trail of shattered truck windows and missing items."Basically took whatever wasn't bolted down," said Trafton.When the man went to leave, he was met by a gate, locked by someone who had left earlier. The camera spies him apparently chaining his truck to the fence and pulling forward, but he can't get the fence down."He then came over to another truck and broke a window. He then took a moving blanket to protect his truck and drove to another fence," said Trafton.In the video, you can see the flash of his lights, before his final act."He ran into the fence, spread it wide open and knocked it over," said Trafton.The repair bill will tally some ,000. Gina Potter has been named the 9th San Ysidro School Superintendent in the last five years.In 2013, Manuel Paul resigned on corruption charges. He pleaded guilty two years later and was sentenced to two months in federal prison.The district hasn’t had a permanent superintendent since September when Julio Fonseca resigned amid allegations of financial wrongdoing.Jose Arturo Sanchez-Macias then stepped in but stepped down two months later following questions regarding payments to himself and his predecessor.Parents and teachers in the district say they want results to create a stronger learning environment they say students deserve. 749
