A Northern California family was forced to evacuate their home over the weekend, as the Carr wildfire continues to spread. Not only was the family tasked with getting themselves out, they also had to evacuate the animals on their rescue farm.Lisa Ellsworth runs Tiny Tim’s Pals, a pet rescue farm in El Dorado Hills, California.“It’s our family, yeah,” says Ellsworth. "We take ‘em in from—sometimes they’ve been abandoned; a lot have been abused, neglected.”This weekend, those animals needed to be rescued from their sanctuary, as the fire in Northern California moved frighteningly close to their farm.“All the sudden, our neighbors come drivin’ up and they’re like, ‘Get out! We’re being evacuated,’” recalls Ellsworth. “The police are coming around, so that’s the notice.”Because of the time constraints to get out, they had to abandon two pigs and two feral dogs that couldn’t be corralled into trailers in time. The animals the family could take, they brought to the Rolling Hills Equestrian Center.Terry Skevington, with the center, says it’s one of the few places that allows owners to bring animals of all shapes and sizes. The animals can even sleep on site with them.“I had an old couple park here and stay with their cats, because the hotels wouldn’t let them stay with their cats,” says Skevington. “To some of ‘em, that’s all they got left.”He says the outpouring of donations of items--like fans for the animal stalls, halters and even feed--has been overwhelming.As for Ellsworth, she doesn’t know the status of her home or the animals she left behind, but she says she’s been able to keep it off her mind by staying busy. Fortunately, Ellsworth has insurance. She says in the worst-case scenario, she’d use the money as an opportunity to build a new barn for her animals.Representatives for the Humane Society that serves the region say, overall, they’ve seen about 1,000 animals displaced since the Carr fire broke out. About 150 of those animals have been housed at Rolling Hills. The center’s operators here say those animals and their owners can stay as long as they need.  2118

A massive cloud of Sahara Desert dust is blanketing the Caribbean as it heads toward the U.S. with a size and concentration that experts say hasn’t been seen in half a century. The thick dust cloud, known as the Saharan Air Layer, is making a 5,000 mile trip from the northern Africa desert to North and Central America along the east to west Trade Winds along the equator. The Saharan Air Layer is between 5,000 and 20,000 feet above the Earth's surface, and dust plumes travel over the Atlantic Ocean several times a year between spring and fall. This year's dust plume is thicker than normal, the concentration of particles in Puerto Rico are the highest in decades. Air quality across most of the Caribbean region fell to record “hazardous” levels Monday and experts who nicknamed the event the “Godzilla dust cloud” warned people to stay indoors and use air filters if they have one. 896

A new report card is out for dozens of fast-food restaurants, and overall, most failed when it comes to serving antibiotic-free beef.Only two of the restaurant chains received an A grade for having no antibiotics in their beef. Those two included the up-and-coming chain BurgerFi and Shake Shack. The remaining top 22 burger chains failed to pass the test. "We know that change can happen,” says Mark Morgenstein, spokesperson for U.S. PIRG, a consumer and health advocacy group. “We just need the market pressure to be applied.”The organization is just one of many pushing for safer foods and antibiotic-free farms.   "The problem starts at the beginning,” Morgenstein says. “It starts on the farm." According to the CDC, it’s estimated drug-resistant superbugs kill 23,000 people in America each year.Just this past year, health groups made progress in getting chains to go antibiotic-free with their chicken."When there was pressure from McDonald’s and KFC and Subway not to use antibiotics in chicken, guess what? A powerful derecho ripped through the Midwest on Monday, with wins in one locale reaching 112 MPH.Lynn, Iowa, had a reported wind gust of 112 MPH Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The storm continued from Iowa into Illinois, blasting Chicago during the evening rush hour. Top winds in Chicago reached 85 MPH, according to the National Weather Service.Nearly 600,000 electric customers in northern Illinois were without power.Helicopter footage captured by WGN-TV in Chicago showed extensive damage from the storms, with roofs blown off, and even a church steeple knocked down.The storm system continued into Indiana before weakening in Ohio. As of late Monday evening, there were more than 750 reports of severe weather throughout the US, most stemming from Monday's massive storm. A derecho is considered a storm that spreads severe winds over a path for at least 250 miles. 910
