SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — UC San Diego was granted a temporary use permit by the city council in National City to use El Toyon Park to conduct a clinical vaccination trial.The permit is good from Sept. 16 to Oct. 31, 2022, with a rental rate of ,000 per month.A spokesperson for UCSD Health said the site would be for the Janssen clinical trial, which is still awaiting final approval locally; more details could not be confirmed Friday.The vaccination clinic would be set up in a parking lot at the park in National City, one of the communities heavily impacted by COVID-19.Community advocates have been working with UCSD to inform potential participants in the South Bay about vaccine trials.“The Chicano Federation has been working with a lot of our underserved communities, but also some of the hardest-hit communities by COVID-19, particularly the Latino communities,” said Roberto Alcantar, Chief Strategy Officer for the Chicano Federation. “One of the hot topics to come out of this is the issue with vaccinations.”Alcantar said concerns were raised over a different trial that was set to begin in the South Bay earlier this month; it was later put on hold. But UCSD quickly worked with the federation to ensure residents in the trial areas would get the information needed to make informed decisions if they wanted to participate.“We’re happy to see that UCSD is taking the lead in National City, and it’s not some other group because we know that they’re doing the best that they can to provide the right information,” he said. “If there are trials that are happening out there that are unethical or targeting people of color with incentives, we’ll call them out.”UCSD researchers previously said they hoped to focus on recruiting people for the trials from underserved communities with the highest rate of COVID-19.The San Diego Latino Health Coalition, which includes the Chicano Federation and several other nonprofit organizations, will continue community outreach efforts before the trial officially begins.“We’re very effective at getting the information out, and people are receptive to us because they trust us, they know us, we’ve been working with them for decades,” said Alcantar.There’s no word on when the trial will start, but soon there may be three clinical trials running simultaneously with two focused primarily on the South Bay. 2361

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Voters in San Diego County will have fewer places to vote in person for the 2020 Presidential Election, but officials say they've increased the opportunities people have to make sure their vote counts.On Wednesday, the county released the final list of 235 "Super Poll" locations, where people can vote in person. Every voter will be assigned to one of those polls.That's down from around 1,600 polling places during the primary."Certainly our world has been upended when it comes down to all things elections," says Michael Vu, the County Registrar of Voters.Vu told ABC 10News the county had to do fewer, larger polling sites to accommodate for social distancing required by coronavirus guidelines. But, he adds that voters will have four days to cast their ballot in person.Those Super Poll locations will be open on Oct. 31, Nov. 1, and Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. On Election Day, they'll be open from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.Even with the extra days and hours for in-person voting, Vu says the best option for voters is to use the mail-in ballot that every registered voter in San Diego will receive around Oct. 6."We, in our county, have had a tradition and culture of voting by mail," says Vu, noting that 76.5% of all registered voters already signed up to be a permanent mail ballot voter.Vu says he has complete confidence that the post office will deliver ballots to voters and return them to the Registrar on time.For people who don't want to put their ballot in the mail, the Registrar is also setting up 126 ballot-drop off sites across the county. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While many houses of worship have moved outdoors in compliance with the latest purple tier restrictions, others say this infringes on their religious rights.Many churches have chosen to keep their doors open for indoor worship, and a San Diego attorney is helping some fight this in court.“The restrictions on houses of worship are arbitrary,” said Paul Jonna, an attorney with law firm LiMandri & Jonna LLP. “No matter what size the church is, they’re closed indoors.”Jonna represents religious leaders and churches in three separate legal battles happening in Los Angeles, Kern, and San Diego counties.“You can’t treat a church like a hair salon,” he said. “Churches are entitled to heightened protection; if you’re going to restrict the fundamental right to exercise religion, which is protected under the first amendment, you need a really, really good reason.”He believes religious services are essential, and shutdown orders on churches are not constitutional.“It’s affecting people’s mental health, it’s affecting their spiritual health, for people of faith there’s nothing more important than going to church and worshiping God,” he said.The local church represented by Jonna is South Bay Pentecostal Church. They initially took their fight to keep churches open all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court a few months ago but lost in a 5 to 4 decision.The battle isn’t over just yet; Jonna submitted a petition to the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday calling for an emergency review of South Bay Pentecostal Church’s case.“We are quite confident that in the very near future, we’ll get a good ruling from the Supreme Court,” he said. “We also think the dynamic has changed now with Justice Barrett being confirmed to the Supreme Court.”Doctors, state and county health officials have repeatedly said indoor gatherings are dangerous during this pandemic, as COVID-19 could spread easily inside.According to San Diego Health and Human Services Agency data, in the first two weeks of November, 7,661 positive COVID-19 cases were reported.Of those cases, 4,917 people were interviewed, and 168 cases were possibly contracted at places of worship.Jonna said his client, Bishop Arthur Hodges, the senior pastor of South Bay Pentecostal Church, is doing all he can to make sure worshippers are safe in his church.“He goes above and beyond the CDC guidelines,” said Jonna. “He requires people to get temperature checks; he’s complying with the masks, social distancing, everything, ventilation systems.”Bishop Hodges tells ABC 10News that since reopening, he has seen zero COVID-19 cases due to being in his church. 2640

Their mom Rhian and her partner, Jeff Leardini, are determined to deliver some holiday cheer."There are so many families that are worried about how they're going to make it to tomorrow. Christmas is the last thing on their mind. We want to take that worry away," said Leardini.Leardini posted on the Nextdoor app an offer to buy and wrap a Christmas toy for any neighbors in need, no strings attached. Leardini, a sales manager for a pet supply company, and his girlfriend, a nurse, kept their jobs during the pandemic."We feel very fortunate and want to help people," said Leardini.During this holiday season, his family are now playing the part of Secret Santa."We just thought there are people that might be embarrassed to go to organizations, so we thought can we help them without them having to go through a lot of red tape," said Leardini.So far, a handful of neighbors have responded to his offer"It's been really emotional reading the messages," said Leardini.Some are dealing with lost jobs, others with COVID-related health issues. Those families will soon receive something extra under the tree."Want to deliver smiles to them, even if it's just for one day.
