SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  As the San Diego Airport plans a Billion expansion to Terminal 1, concerns over how to get people to and from Lindbergh Field are creating problems for the project."We are the first and last impression people have of San Diego," says Dennis Probst, the Airport VP of Development. "We want to make it a good one."The airport served a record 22 million passengers in 2017. They expect that number to grow to 28 million by 2035.  Getting all of those people to and from Lindbergh is a big part of the expansion.Plans put forward by the airport call for a new three lane roadway connecting Harbor Drive to Lindbergh. It would start near Laurel Street and take people directly to the new terminal and proposed parking garage."No stop lights, no stop signs, free-flowing," says Probst. "It's gonna take about 45,000 cars a day off Harbor Drive."But other San Diego agencies say the airport needs to think bigger and focus on different modes of transportation, instead of just cars."Connecting the airport to transit is something we've been talking about for a long, long time," says Rafael Castellanos, the Chair of the Port of San Diego. "If San Diego wants to be a world class city, we need to have world-class infrastructure."The Port owns the land that the airport sits on. They've proposed a light rail-style people mover that would connect trolley stations nearby to the terminal.Meanwhile, SANDAG and the County of San Diego released a study proposing a skyway with gondola rides that could run from the Convention Center to the Airport."I think the only obstacle is getting everyone to the table quickly," says Castellanos. "That's something that can be easily overcome."The airport says they're willing to look at all options, but they can't take a stand or incorporate any into their current plans because they can only control what happens on airport property."The view from the airport's side is that we're not the region's transit planning agency," says Probst.Funding is also an issue. The expansion project will only use FAA and airport-generated money. Because of that, FAA rules say they can only spend money to improve things at the airport or directly related to the airport. A tram or skyway that spans all of Harbor Drive would require an exception to that rule and would need money from other agencies as well.Probst says the airport has already started talking to the FAA about that option. They got a similar exception to help with infrastructure improvements when the airport built the rental car center a few years back.Right now, the airport is reviewing comments from their Environmental Impact Report. The next step is to put together environmental quality reports for the state and the federal government. Probst says the debate over transit is slowing down the process, to the point where he doesn't think they'll be able to start construction until after 2020. 2932

High home prices and rising interest rates are expected to slow sales.In our effort to help you find ways to make it in San Diego, 10News discovered a generation of people motivated to sell, and a generation willing to do the work to get a better deal."So, if you think about going into the grocery store and there's a bin of apples, you want to pick the one that's the shiniest right?” says Lisa Becker, a realtor for Keller-Williams. “Our job is to help the sellers spend money strategically and wisely, and yet we have a saying, ‘Don’t step over a dollar bill to pick up a penny.'"Becker encourages sellers not to spend money where it isn't necessary to sell their homes, including her current clients.“They’ve been here for 40 years, they’re in their late 70s,” says Becker. Baby Boomers are the fastest growing generation of sellers. According to Pew Research, 10,000 Baby Boomers retire every day, many with adult children long gone. Now these Boomers are looking to downsize into something more manageable on a fixed income.“They just took ,000 and resurfaced the pool, because the pool needed it,” says Becker showing off the backyard pool. “So, they’re taking care of the property, but this is a reason they want out.”An acre lot is harder to manage for someone in their 70s but might be perfect for a young family looking for their first home. With Boomers, many of the homes are well taken care of and maintained, but the interiors are not always up to modern designs.“So that’s where we come in as the realtor to have them do it in the simplest way possible,” says Becker. “So, when we take down the wallpaper and bring in more contemporary accessories, this kitchen will be absolutely fine. They’ve taken really great care of it, yet it’s still tile counters, and we know the buyer is going to want to put in quartz or granite in here.”No need for a costly upgrade in the kitchen or any other rooms. Instead, Becker and her team will take out all the furniture and stage the entire house.“So, as we go through the home, we’re going to be neutralizing all the paint,” says Becker. That gives the younger buyer a vision of the home’s potential.Repairs that need to be made will be made.“We’re going to come in and get this repaired because it just begs too many questions,” says Becker, pointing out rotting wood on the back patio cover.The goal is to grab the buyer’s attention and allow them to put in some sweat equity after moving in, creating their vision for larger projects like kitchens and master bedrooms.“Buyers' logic makes them think, and emotion makes them act. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With hospital beds running short, healthcare workers are trying to care for COVID-19 patients as efficiently as possible, using everything they’ve learned over the last nine months.Improvements in medications and methods have helped shorten hospital stays, said Sharp Memorial Hospital chief medical officer Dr. Tom Lawrie.In March, Sharp said COVID-19 patients stayed 12 days in the hospital on average. In November, the average dropped to 5.3 days. Other institutions have reported similar drops in the length of patient stays.COVID-19 patients now receive a three drug regimen: Remdesivir to fight the virus, a powerful steroid called dexamethasone to prevent the immune system from going haywire, and medications like heparin to reduce blood clotting.On top of that, hospitals have improved techniques like when to use ventilators.“Initially, we were in this conundrum where we weren't sure whether we should intubate patients early or whether we should wait a little later,” Dr. Lawrie said. “Over the last several months we've figured out a really good progression.”The progression now starts with a surprisingly simple technique called proning. Doctors around the country discovered that turning COVID-19 patients onto their stomachs rapidly improved breathing.Early research suggests proning may keep COVID patients off ventilators.“By putting people on their stomach in these positions and by proning them, you allow blood to get where the air is and therefore you get better oxygenation,” Dr. Lawrie said. “It makes the oxygen levels better. It makes their work of breathing better. It makes them feel better generally.”Proning helps move blood from one area of the lung to another where it can receive more oxygen. These regions are called West’s zones of the lung, named after research in the 1960’s by UC San Diego Professor Emeritus John B. West.Proning has been used as a medical intervention since 1976, when a doctor and a nurse in central Michigan published a study showing it could benefit patients in respiratory distress.Dr. Lawrie said there are also two outside factors contributing to shorter hospital stays across the country. The patients that are showing up now tend to be younger than early in the pandemic. Younger patients are more likely to respond well to treatment.There’s also evidence the virus has mutated over time, possibly making it more contagious but slightly less severe, Dr. Lawrie said.However, patients lately have been showing up faster than hospitals can care for them, threatening to overwhelm already crowded facilities. "If that happens, they won't have access to an ICU bed or to the medications that they need," he said. 2699
