WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States and Israel tracked and killed a senior al-Qaida operative in Iran earlier this year, in a bold intelligence operation that came as the Trump administration was ramping up pressure on Tehran. Four current and former U.S. officials say the operative, Abu Mohammed al-Masri, al-Qaida’s No. 2, was killed by assassins in the Iranian capital in August. Two of the officials, one current and one former, say Israeli agents carried out the operation. Two others say Israel had been involved in surveillance but could not say definitively who pulled the trigger when al-Masri was gunned down in a Tehran alley on Aug. 7, the anniversary of the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. 745
WAYNESBORO, Tennessee — A litter of puppies were rescued from a septic tank in a rural part of Tennessee after they were dumped by their former owner.Officials with the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency called workers with the County Road Animal Rescue in Waynesboro were called to take the animals.Seven pups and their mother were found in an old septic tank. A second mother and four pups were also found in a nearby woodshed.Rescue workers believe the dogs hid their pups in order to protect them. Both mother dogs were emaciated and in need of care.In a Facebook post, rescue officials encouraged pet owners to spay and neuter their pets."We can’t possibly keep up with all these dogs. Our waiting list is absolutely full. Call People For Animals today if you haven’t fixed your dog yet," the post stated. 843

Washington state has a new law to protect net neutrality at a time when the feds are getting rid of it.In a bipartisan effort, the state's legislators passed House Bill 2282. which was signed into law Monday by Gov. Jay Inslee."Washington will be the first state in the nation to preserve the open internet," Inslee said at the bill signing. The state law, approved by the legislature last month, is to safeguard net neutrality protections, which have been repealed by the Federal Communications Commission and are scheduled to officially end April 23. Net neutrality requires internet service providers to treat all online content the same, meaning they can't deliberately speed up or slow down traffic from specific websites to put their own content at advantage over rivals. The FCC's decision to overturn net neutrality has been championed by the telecom industry, but widely criticized by technology companies and consumer advocacy groups. Attorneys general from more than 20 red and blue states filed a lawsuit in January to stop the repeal.Inslee said the new measure would protect an open internet in Washington, which he described as having "allowed the free flow of information and ideas in one of the greatest demonstrations of free speech in our history."HB2282 bars internet service providers in the state from blocking content, applications, or services, or slowing down traffic on the basis of content or whether they got paid to favor certain traffic. The law goes into effect June 6. 1512
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump said Thursday that he will soon sign an executive order that will establish a commission to promote "patriotic education" in schools. He said it will be called the “1776 Commission,” named after the year the United States was founded.“It will encourage our educators to teach our children about the miracle of American history and make plans to honor the 250th anniversary of our founding,” said Trump during a speech at the National Archive Museum on Constitution Day.Trump also announced that the National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded a grant to support the development of pro-American curriculum that he says celebrates the truth about the nation’s history.“The only path to national unity is through our shared identity as Americans,” said Trump. “That is why it is so urgent that we restore patriotic education to our schools.”During his speech, Trump took aim, again, at The 1619 Project, an initiative developed by The New York Times Magazine in 2019. The project “aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.”Trump claims The 1619 Project distorts American History and he blames Democrats.“The left has warped, distorted and defiled the American story with deceptions, falsehoods and lies. There is no better example that The New York Times’ totally discredited 1619 Project,” said Trump. “This project rewrites American history to teach our children that we were founded on the principle of oppression, not freedom. Nothing could be further from the truth.”In the past, Trump has threatened to cut funding to public schools that implement The 1619 Project into their curriculum. At the end of his speech, Trump signed a Constitution Day proclamation.“Our youth will be taught to love America with all of their heart and all of their soul. We will save this cherished inheritance for our children, for their children and for every generation to come.” 2040
