Dr. Anthony Fauci said in an interview on Wednesday that he believes that wearing a mask during the coronavirus pandemic is a sign of respect to others.Fauci, the Director of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases, made the comments during an interview with CNN on Wednesday morning."I mean it's sort of respect for another person and have that other person respect you. You wear a mask, they wear a mask, you protect each other," Fauci said.He added that while masks aren't 100% effective, he believes it's the "kind of thing you should be doing" during the pandemic."I do it when I'm in the public for the reasons that A, I want to protect myself, and protect others, and also because I want to make it be a symbol for people to see that that's the kind of thing you should be doing," he said. The CDC already recommends that all Americans wear a mask when in situations while in large groups where social distancing could be difficult.Fauci's comments come as the issues of masks have become a divisive political issue as the virus continues to spread. Though President Donald Trump briefly wore a mask while touring a Ford plant in Michigan last week, he has chosen not to wear them during visits to other plants. Earlier this week, Trump retweeted a political pundit that implied Trump chooses not to wear a mask because of looks. On Tuesday, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam ordered that all Virginians wear a mask while indoors in public buildings — an order that most states have chosen not to implement. 1540
Donald Stratton nearly made the ultimate sacrifice 79 years ago. Stratton was on board the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.According to the National Park Service, Stratton joined the Navy in 1940, and was assigned to the USS Arizona. On Dec. 7, 1941, Stratton was on the forward mast of the ship as it burned. A fellow sailor threw Stratton a line, which allowed Stratton to crawl to safety above the high water. But the flames took a toll on Stratton as burns covered 70% of his body. Stratton was then given a medical discharge the following September, but Stratton was not done serving his country. On Sunday, the U.S. National Park Service reported that Stratton has died at the age of 97, making him one of the last surviving service members from the Pearl Harbor attack. In Stratton's honor, the flags at the USS Arizona memorial in Hawaii were flown at half-staff. In January 1944, Stratton reenlisted and served through December 1946, obtaining the rank of Gunners Mate Second Class. The attack killed 2,390 service members, roughly half from the USS Arizona. Stratton had recently participated in a few remembrances of the 1941 attack, and was even invited into the Oval Office by President Donald Trump in 2017. He also wrote a 1280

DETROIT — Police are looking for a man caught on camera stuffing a 4-foot snake down his pants at a pet store in Rockwood, Michigan, on Wednesday, March 20.Surveillance video at the I Love My Pets store shows the man reaching into the python's cage before putting it in his pants and casually walking away.Store employees say the python had just been adopted and was getting ready to go to its new home on the same day it was stolen."The last thing we were expecting was to check the video and take a closer look and see a man putting it down the front of his pants, we were not expecting that at all," said employee Callie McElroy. "We couldn't fathom the way someone could sneak a snake that big out of a store like that."Anyone with information is asked to contact the Rockwood Police Department. 811
Estevan Almanza has worked in the construction industry for nearly a decade, with his pay increasing from to 22 an hour.Over the past few years, he’s seen this industry struggle to find qualified workers. That has been putting extra stress on him and his crew.“A lot of work on us,” Almanza said. “It’s more tiring, but I guess more hours.”And now, it's more concerning because the impact of this labor shortage is being felt across the country.Associated Builders and Contractors projects the construction industry will need nearly half a million more workers in 2020 and an additional 740,000 more in 2021.This shortage of construction workers could end up costing you.“The laborers, they affect everybody’s lives,” said Zsuzsa Balogh, Ph.D., the program coordinator in the Department of Civil Engineering Technology at Metropolitan State University of Denver. She says the reasons for the shortage range from retirement to construction workers retraining themselves for other industries. With less skilled laborers and more of the qualified workers clocking overtime, Balogh believes that extra cost is passed on to consumers.“You can see the increase of the cost,” she said. “Basically, somewhere that money has to show, and the consumers will be the ones to pay that extra money.”In an attempt to help attract more skilled workers, some contractors are offering improved incentives like health care, 401k options and yearly raises.“It’s as bad as we’ve ever seen,” said Todd Smith, vice president of operations for Lawrence Construction Company. “Very few people are going into this industry.” Smith says this shortage of skilled workers is creating a timeline of concern.“Right now, we’ve had ads out for certain positions for six months and haven’t gotten any responses yet,” he said. Smith believes in addition to the spike in retirements, there’s also fewer construction workers because there’s less vocational training available.“We’ve pushed all of our young people into college which college is great for some people for some people but not for everyone,” Smith said.As companies like Lawrence Construction continue to struggle to find staff, bids keep getting higher.“It’s going to be driving the prices up, because it’s now with the labor shortage, now the people can demand a higher pay,” Smith said.Though construction is hard work, Smith says its can also be very rewarding.“You can drive down a stretch of road and tell you family, ‘I worked on this job’” he said. “And you can do that for many years to come.” 2543
