We know virtual learning is mentally hard on kids, but what about physically? If your child is having persistent neck or back pain, it might be related to poor posture and poor body positioning.At some point during the pandemic, most children across the country were doing some sort of computer-assisted learning. At Children's Hospital of Orange County in Southern California, pediatric physical therapist Ruchi Bagrodia covers posture and seating with kids who are of age.There are many things they should be doing.“I always encourage them, a child, to sit at a dining or office table, a chair with a seat back. Their back should be supported,” Bagrodia said.There are lots of things they shouldn't do.“Never sitting on the floor, never sitting in bed, never sitting on the couch,” Bagrodia said. “For therapy appointments or learning, it promotes poor posture if you’re in a squishy bean bag chair or couch. You’re never going to sit up well if you’re there for a couple hours. You’ll develop all sorts of kinks and achiness in the neck, the shoulder, the back.”Many Americans are at home, and these days, many are in chairs a lot. If you're using a device, it matters where you put it. “The level of the tablet, the height of it matters,” said Bagrodia. “We want it arm’s-lengths away and the top of the screen should be just below your eye level. If you’re on the floor and your tablet is on your lap, you’re going to be looking down at your lap and that can develop shoulder neck pain, achiness.”When asked about the long-term implications of persistent bad posture, Bagrodia said, “Poor posture is something is that is developed in a 6- or 7-year-old by the time they’re 20, maybe they do have serious back pain or issues.”While you're repositioning your children, doctors say, pay attention to their mental health too.“Across all different mental health issues, we’re seeing a marked increase, everything in kids. We’re not just talking one age range, we’re talking young childhood all the way through late teenagers,” says Dr. Christopher Min, a pediatric psychologist.Dr. Min says kids need the structure, stability and routine that school provides, and that is what's missing for a lot of kids.“Kids' bodies and brains do really well, “ Dr. Min said. “We’re creatures of habit, when they have that regularity, it’s really great for their brains.”Dr. Min says try to provide some sort of routine and make sure you incorporate enough physical activity, such as a daily family walk. And he says there are signs when things are not going well for children.“For kids, a sign of some mental health difficulties is irritability (which) is a symptom of anxiety and depression in kids,” Dr. Min said.He recommends to pay attention to sleeping and eating habits. While you can't do everything, you can definitely make sure children are consistently physically comfortable while learning at home. That doesn't mean you need a fancy or expensive desk.“If the chair is too high and their feet is hanging off, then put a box or laundry basket underneath their feet so they’re supported. If the laptop is really low, then put books or something under the laptop to lift it up, put a cushion if the chair is too big, put a pillow, or roll up a sweatshirt and tuck it under the low back for some support,” says Bagrodia.At the same time, if you are sitting for long periods of time, check your positioning as well, since it appears the work from home life won't be sitting anytime soon. 3488

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Postal Service has sent letters to 46 states, warning it cannot guarantee all ballots cast by mail for the November election will arrive in time to be counted. That's according to a report published Friday by The Washington Post. The revelation that many voters could be disenfranchised if they try to vote by mail comes amid a campaign by President Donald Trump to sow doubts about the election. Though Trump casts his own ballot by mail, he’s railed against efforts to allow more people to do so, which he argues without evidence will lead to increased voter fraud. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal officials say the key component to getting the COVID-19 vaccine distributed across the country will lie in the hands of states, with help from major pharmacy chains, like CVS and Walgreens.“We want to replicate what the experience you have with the flu vaccine — convenient to you, a tried-and-true system that we do hundreds of millions of vaccines through every year,” said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar. “That's the backbone of the approach we're taking.”Yet, if flu vaccine rates are any indication, that backbone may not suffice.Dr. Eric Schneider is with The Commonwealth Fund, an independent organization that studies health policy. They recently delved into previous vaccination rates to see how it might unfold for COVID-19.“Our health care system does well at developing new technologies like these vaccines, which are really quite amazing, scientifically speaking,” Dr. Schneider said. “But we don't do as well at making sure those technologies are distributed to the people who need them most. And we're seeing that in the prior vaccination experience, and I’m worried we will see that with COVID-19.”What did they find?A mere 51% of Americans got the flu vaccine last year and only 38% got the H1N1 swine flu vaccine 10 years ago, which had a similar vaccine development timetable and pressure to COVID-19.Those low vaccination rates matter because in order for the COVID-19 vaccine to create herd immunity in the U.S., between 70 and 90% of all Americans will need to get vaccinated.“The concept of herd immunity really is developed out of vaccination programs because the question is ‘What proportion of the population needs to be vaccinated to prevent the circulation of a virus in the population?’” Dr. Schneider said.Just getting that shot could vary depending on where you live, as the federal government is leaving that up to each state.“That's going to be up to the nation's governors as they prioritize within their states,” HHS Secretary Azar said.However, Dr. Schneider said that in order for the states to pull it off, they are going to need federal help.“States are in incredible difficulty right now with their budgets and they need federal support,” he said. “Congress is considering a federal rescue package. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Six Russian military officers sought to use computer hacking to disrupt the French election, the Winter Olympics in South Korea and U.S. businesses.That's according to a Justice Department indictment unsealed Monday that details attacks on a broad range of political, financial and athletic targets.While announcing the charges at a press conference, Assistant Attorney General John C. Demers called the officers’ actions “the most disruptive and destructive” computer attacks ever attributed to a single group. Demers said no country has weaponized its cyber capabilities as maliciously and irresponsibly as Russia, “wantonly causing unprecedented collateral damage to pursue small tactical advantages and to satisfy fits of spite.” All the defendants are alleged intelligence officers in the Russian military agency known as the GRU. The DOJ previously charged members of the same unit, also known to cybersecurity researchers as “Sandworm Team,” for their role in Russia’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 U.S. elections. Though, the new indictment doesn't charge the officers in connection with the interference in the U.S. elections.The indictment also accuses the defendants in destructive attacks on Ukraine’s power grid. “These were the first reported destructive malware attacks against the control systems of civilian critical infrastructure,” said Demers. “These attacks turned out the lights and turned off the heat in the middle of the Eastern European winter, as the lives of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian men, women and children went dark and cold.” From there, Demers says the conspirators’ “destructive path” widened to encompass “virtually the whole world.” The conspirators allegedly unleashed the “NotPetya” malware, which was reportedly designed to bring down entire networks in seconds and searching for remote computer connections through which to attack additional innocent victims. “The entirely foreseeable result was that the worm quickly spread globally, shutting down companies and inflicting immense financial harm,” said Demers. “This irresponsible conduct impaired the ability of companies in critical sectors, such as transportation and health, to provide services to the public–not only in Ukraine, but as far away as Western Pennsylvania."Demers says the malware led to monetary losses of nearly billion. Next, officials say the conspirators then turned their sights on the Winter Olympics. “The conspirators, feeling the embarrassment of international penalties related to Russia’s state-sponsored doping program, i.e., cheating, took it upon themselves to undermine the games,” said Demers. “Their cyber-attack combined the emotional maturity of a petulant child with the resources of a nation state.” The officers are accused of conducting spear phishing campaigns against South Korea, the host of the 2018 games, as well as the International Olympic Committee, Olympic partners, and athletes. Then, during the opening ceremony, they allegedly launched the “Olympic Destroyer” malware attack, which deleted data from thousands of computers supporting the Games, rendering them inoperable. The officers are also accused of supporting a hack-and-leak operation in the days leading up to the 2017 French elections, with attacks directed at the political party of French President Emmanuel Macron. “This indictment lays bare Russia’s use of its cyber capabilities to destabilize and interfere with the domestic political and economic systems of other countries, thus providing a cold reminder of why its proposal is nothing more than dishonest rhetoric and cynical and cheap propaganda,” said Demers. 3669
