CANTON, Ohio — A 25-year-old Ohio woman has been charged for allegedly starving two dogs locked in a cage, causing one of the animals to eat the other after it died, according to court records.Court records state that on or about April 5, Jessica J. Swinehart locked a beagle in a cage with a German shepherd-mix and starved the animals. When the beagle died, the other dog ate it to survive. When authorities found the German shepherd, it appeared to have lost nearly two-thirds of its body weight. It was still locked in the cage with the decaying beagle.An arrest warrant was filed April 8 and she was later arrested.Swinehart has been charged with two counts of prohibitions concerning companion animals, a fifth-degree felony.A future court date is pending. 779

Authorities say Maricopa County Assessor Paul D. Petersen has been indicted in an adoption fraud scheme.The Department of Public Safety raided Petersen's home and businesses on Tuesday evening.During that raid, eight pregnant Marshallese women were located.According to the Attorney General's Office, the raids are related to a multi-state investigation, arrest, and criminal indictment involving Petersen and another person -- Lynwood Jennet. Petersen also faces charges for related offenses in Arkansas and Utah.According to the indictment, Petersen and Jennet face 32 counts, including conspiracy, fraudulent schemes and practices, theft, and forgery.Officials say in addition to being County Assessor for Maricopa County, Petersen is also an adoption lawyer.In a press conference held Wednesday, Attorney General Mark Brnovich said none of the women who gave birth did anything illegal, and none of the families that adopted children are accused of any crimes. Adoptions that are pending in other states involving children from these schemes will be looked at on a case by case basis. 1100

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – A 21-year-old Marine was killed in a tactical vehicle accident at a California training center Sunday morning. The United States Marine Corps announced Monday that Pfc. Christian Bautista of Cook County, Illinois died after the M-1151 Enhanced Armament Carrier he was in crashed around 7:15 a.m.Despite live-saving efforts from two other Marines and paramedics, the Marine Corps says Bautista was pronounced dead at the scene at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center (MWTC) in Bridgeport.Bautista was a motor vehicle operator serving as a vehicle turret gunner assigned to 1st Transportation Support Battalion (TSB), Combat Logistics Regiment 1, 1st Marine Logistics Group. 1st TSB is aboard MWTC conducting tactical logistics support training in a mountainous environment.Bautista enlisted in the Marine Corps in September 2018. He graduated from Motor Transportation School at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and was assigned to 1st TSB at Camp Pendleton, California, in May 2019. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terror Service Medal. "Our primary concern is for the Marine we've lost, his family, friends, and fellow Marines and sailors," said Brig. Gen. Roberta L. Shea, commanding general of 1st Marine Logistics Group, in a statement. "We have them in our prayers and will exhaust all resources to aid them during this difficult time." According to a report by the National Fire Protection Association released in 2017, nearly 200 structure fires a year are blamed on Christmas trees. According to the report, fires originating from Christmas trees cause six deaths per year, on average. One-in-four fires from Christmas trees start from heat source such as a candle. Although buying an artificial tree likely decreases the risk of a fire, for every three fires sparked by a real Christmas tree, one is caused by an artificial tree. The National Fire Protection Association released Christmas tree fire prevention tips:· Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.· Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk. · Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. · Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit. · Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily. · Use lights that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.· Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect. · Never use lit candles to decorate the tree. · Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. 1652
