"The waves come up and beat against the cliffs, and the gravity pulls on those cliffs day after day and year after year," Dr. Abbott said. "It just gradually weakens, and one day it can't take it anymore and just falls down."The waves nibble away the rock at the bottom, and the water for the ice plants on the top, brown, softer sediment weaken the formation. "All that does really is add weight to the cliff," Dr. Abbott said. Just feet north of Friday's fallen rock, there is a formation of what looks to be a small cave. With no bottom support, the top will eventually break off. "When that falls, that's the same thing as having a cement wall fall on you," Dr. Abbott said. We walked a few more feet north and saw what he called another visible sign of danger. "This strong cliff here and this rock mass now is now detached from the main rock," Dr. Abbott pointed.The vertical fracture separated the front rock formation from the rest of the bluff. This is a sign that it is ready to form. Exactly when it falls, only Mother Nature will know. So the next time you decide on where o put down your beach towel, remember to study the rock behind you. "Look for fractures or overhanging rock masses, and don't go near those," Dr. Abbott warned. ENCINITAS, Calif., (KGTV) — Law enforcement agencies all around San Diego are working to find out if there are any more overdoses tied to mysterious blue pills that killed four people in East County this week. The pills are advertised as having a "painkiller high."An Encinitas mother, Lisa Nava was watching 10News this morning when she found out about the mysterious blue pills. She recognized them as the same pills her son took before he died three months ago.The memories of her son make her laugh. But the way he died brings Nava to tears. "Your biggest job in your life is to protect your child. I couldn't protect mine," Nava cried.Last year, her son Alex Morgan Nava had a skateboarding accident. He broke his knee, then his ankle. Doctors prescribed him oxycodone for this pain. Little did he know that would lead to an opioid addiction that would eventually kill him. On April 5, 2019, her Alex died of an accidental drug overdose. He was 24 years old. The last three months have been hell for the Nava family. But Friday morning, she saw a particular report on 10News. It was 10News anchor Virginia Cha saying, "Deputies connected some blue pills to the deaths of four people and just 24 hours."She immediately recognized the "blue pills." They were the same pills she confiscated from her son earlier this year. "I had to flush them down the toilet, and that was in January. They were those M-30's. The blue pills," Nava vividly remembered. Since then, the Nava family worked together to help Alex. They took him to the emergency room on multiple occasions. They sent him to a 30-day rehab facility. But Alex was too hooked. "He just made a wrong turn and couldn't turn around. He ran out of time," Nava said. His cause of death was 'Acute polydrug intoxication: Combined effects of acetaminophen and fentanyl-- The tiniest dose of one of the deadliest drugs."We thought he would be one of the lucky ones. But we didn't know that we were dealing with fentanyl," Nava cried.According to the Health and Human Services, around 130 people in America die of opioid overdoses every day. Alex is now one of them. But Nava says your loved one does not have to be if you are vigilant."You never know the last time you were going to see your child," Nava said. "Even the best most advantage children fall victim to these addictions. Check in on them. It's not anything to be casual about. FALLBROOK (CNS) - One person was killed on Interstate 15 near Fallbrook early Saturday morning in a single-vehicle crash that may have involved alcohol, authorities said.California Highway Patrol officers were first alerted to the crash shortly after 5 a.m. when a truck driver reported seeing a damaged car with an injured person inside stop momentarily at the truck scales in Rainbow before continuing on northbound I-15, CHP Officer Mark Latulippe said.Officers called hospitals in Temecula and Murrieta to check if there were any walk-in patients who could have been involved in the crash, and eventually were alerted that apparent victims had turned up at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta, according to a CHP incident log.One passenger involved in the crash, identified as a 20-year-old man from Winchester, was pronounced dead at the hospital, Latulippe said. Another passenger, a 21-year-old Torrance man, sustained moderate injuries and the driver, a 23-year-old man also from Torrance, was not injured.The driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, Latulippe said.Officers were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and determined it occurred on northbound I-15 past state Route 76.Evidence suggested that the car struck a call box, lost control toward the center divider and may have returned to the right shoulder before continuing on the freeway, Latulippe said.Officers asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the CHP Border Communications Center at (858) 637-3800. 1538
