BRUSSELS, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Wednesday that China and Belgium should enhance communication and cooperation in a variety of areas to deepen their bilateral relations.Based on the principle of equality and mutual benefit, China wishes to encourage mutual investment and broaden cooperation with Belgium in high-end manufacturing, biological technology, new material and agricultural products processing, Wen told Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme during a meeting.China attaches great importance to its friendly cooperative relations with Belgium, Wen said.Seizing the opportunity of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties in 2011, China wishes to make a joint effort with Belgium to inject new energy into their bilateral ties by enhancing all-level exchanges and make plans for cooperation, the premier said.Despite the global financial crisis, trade between China and Belgium has witnessed growing momentum with rocketing Belgian exports to China, Wen said. The two countries have made progress in cooperating on finance, nuclear energy, and communications, he said.Wen said both countries should oppose trade protectionism, counter global challenges and strengthen coordination and cooperation in the United Nations and the World Trade Organization.

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The United States has repeatedly blocked investment from Chinese companies on national security grounds, a protectionist move that will only harm its own interests, analysts say.Eight U.S. congressmen recently asked the Obama administration to scrutinize a deal between Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei and the American operator Sprint Nextel on national security grounds. It was not the first time Huawei's attempts to break into the U.S. market have been stymied. Earlier its buyout attempt of 3Com was summarily dismissed by the U.S. government.Citing national security concerns again, a bipartisan group of 50 lawmakers in July requested that the government investigate an investment project of China's Anshan Iron and Steel Group (Ansteel), China's fourth largest steelmaker, which plans to establish a joint rebar venture with a U.S. partner in Mississippi."It is inappropriate for some U.S. lawmakers to label regular business behavior as a move that threatens national security," Yao Jian, a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, recently said about Ansteel's investment plan."I hope the United States can create a better investment environment for Chinese enterprises," he said.Chinese analysts said the actions were sheer protectionism, adding that national security concerns is only a lame excuse by U.S. authorities, whose true intention is to protect the interests of domestic enterprises and industries. Moreover, standing up to China's allegedly unfair trade practices can easily earn the congressmen much needed political chips in the upcoming mid-term election in November, the analysts said. The setback that Huawei and Ansteel suffered is only the tip of the iceberg. Actually, blocking investment from Chinese companies in the name of national security has morphed into a knee-jerk reaction that could only harm America's own interests.Emcore Corporation, a U.S. fiber optics producer, announced in late June that it has abandoned a joint venture in partnership with China's Tangshan Caofeidian Investment Corporation because the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States "has certain regulatory concerns about the transaction."

BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- China's banking regulator will strictly implement the central government's macroeconomic policies that aim to curb soaring housing prices, an official said Tuesday.Ye Yanfei, deputy head of the Statistics Department of the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC), said the CBRC will restrain speculative property investment and support the building of affordable housing while controlling risk.China's housing market and lending to the property sector are crucial to the national economy and people's livelihood, as well as to the stable and steady development of the nation's banking sector, Ye said at a seminar in Beijing.Ye's remarks come after the banking regulator said it would further "instruct and monitor" commercial banks' efforts to strengthen the management of lending to home-buyers.Ye's comments echo those of Zhang Ping, director of the National Development and Reform Commission, who said last Thursday in a report to China's top legislature the government will "further implement the measures meant to curb excessive gains in housing prices and resolutely restrain speculative property investment in the second half the year."Ye also said the CBRC has pushed lenders to test the impact of falling house prices, although the regulator said earlier that hypothetical scenarios examined in stress tests do not herald any change in policyHousing prices in major Chinese cities rose 10.3 percent year on year in July, slower than the 11.4 percent growth rate in June, according to official figures. On a monthly basis, housing prices in June fell 0.1 percent from May and July prices were unchanged from June.

BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has urged accelerating research and development of low-carbon technology and mass participation to fulfill national energy saving and emission reduction targets."The global climate change is deeply affecting human beings' living and development. Our country, now in a stage of fast industrial and urban development, is facing obvious environmental pressure," Xi said here Saturday while attending activities to mark this year's National Science Popularization Day.The theme of Saturday's activities is "saving energy and resources, protecting ecological environment and ensuring safety and health."Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping (C) visits solar energy utilization technology while attending activities to mark the National Science Popularization Day in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 18, 2010.Xi urged the whole society to continue energy-saving and emission-reducing campaigns and support the country's policies on climate change. In addition, Xi urged the country's youth to put forward more ideas for low-carbon life style and contribute their own green inventions.
