SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some local Uber customers got a major case of sticker shock when they see just how much they were being charged for their rides.On Wednesday afternoon, Kelley Rowe and two others were trying to get from the airport to the convention center to get her Comic-Con badges. Rowe, who flew in from Wisconsin, clicked and approved an Uber ride for .08. Not long after, she got an alarming message. "I got a text from my credit card company asking if it was fraud. Uber tried to charge ,308 to my credit car," said Rowe.The pending charge on her credit card was 100 times the actual cost. "It was huge sticker shock. I'm sure I swore immediately," said Rowe.Her bank put a hold on the charge and the ride never happened. Her credit card was now suspended during a week she needed to use it. "I'm very lucky I had credit card attached and not a debit card," said Rowe. Others may not have been so lucky. Some customers tweeted the ride drained their accounts. According to the Washington Post, an unknown amount of riders in San Diego and Washington D.C. experienced what Uber calls a glitch from a 'known' issue.Uber called it a system error in a message sent to Rowe. The company saying the overcharges will be reversed, but Rowe says needs to be more forthcoming and apologize. "They should be explicit about what the problem was, the scope and what they're doing to prevent it in the future. An apology would demonstrate some form of accountability and remorse," said Rowe. 10news reached out to Uber to find out if the problem has been corrected for good, but have not gotten a response. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Small businesses trying to stay afloat amid coronavirus restrictions can apply for up to million in forgivable low-interest loans to help them get by. The Federal Small Business Administration has opened its application site for businesses with fewer than 500 employees to apply for the loans, which would have an interest rate of no more than 4 percent. The loans are part of the stimulus package Congress and the President authorized last week. They are meant to help small businesses maintain payroll and meet essential obligations like rent, mortgages and utilities at a time social distancing has eliminated most consumer spending. "Forgiveness will be reduced if full-time headcount declines, or if salaries and wages decrease."Kelly DuFord Williams, a managing partner at Slate Law Group, says this is an unprecedented opportunity for small businesses, given the low interest loan offer and six months of deferred payments. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University has instituted new protocols to keep the coronavirus from spreading on campus.Dr. Luke Wood, Vice President of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity, said they hired security to patrol the campus from Thursday through Sunday after hours, document policy violations, and send reports to staff who handle disciplinary action."There are real consequences now of our COVID-19 policies, and that can range from a warning, to suspension to even in extreme cases, expulsion," Wood said.He said they also have a wellness ambassador program they hope to expand to 50 personnel, "so that when students come on campus physically they are being greeted and welcomed to the campus. They're reminded of our policies around wearing face-masks, around social distancing."Wood said he wants to make sure SDSU doesn't join the growing list of colleges with outbreaks."We're doing everything that's within our power to make sure that we don't follow in others' footsteps," he said. "It's demonstrating we take this very seriously."Only a third of students (about 2,600) are living on campus this year, according to Wood. In-person classes have been cut from thousands to 202. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego winemakers say business is picking up, and there's a new way to for locals to get their foot in the door. A new report by the San Diego County Vintners Association says there are now 116 wineries in the region, with sales nearly doubling in the last year. The industry now has about 700 workers in the county. Now, the association has teamed up with Cuyamaca College for a Viticulture Technician Apprenticeship program. Participants work 1,500 hours a year, learning the ins and outs of winemaking. They earn an hour the first year and the second, with opportunities to make more doing side jobs once they get enough experience. "You can't really sell wine unless you know where it's coming from and what goes into it, creating the story behind the wine itself," said Kaylan Wedemeyer, who is an apprentice for La Mesa's San Pasqual Winery.Linda McWilliams, who owns San Pasqual, said many local wineries are mom and pops, but that apprentices can also grow with them."I think we'll find places for the people who graduate, and then we'll build together," she said. The program is accepting applications ahead of interviews in December, and January starts.  1227
