(WKBW) — It’s a conversation no one wants to have, but for many it’s necessary.“You don’t know what’s going to happen if one of us is left alone,” said Amy Paoletti of Williamsville.Getting life insurance in a COVID-19 world has Paoletti and her husband looking at their options.“You see so many people of all ages dying and no one has anything covered because it just happened,” she said.Paoletti says with owning her own business, Amy’s Fine Jewelry in Williamsville, New York, and her husband working in healthcare, they’re both in contact with many people daily.They’re looking at their life insurance options in case something were to happen to either.“They look at your age, your health and your lifestyle,” said Demetrius Mack, owner of MackBarr Group. (KGTV) -- Authorities are asking for the public’s help identifying two women accused in a series of check frauds and commercial burglaries.On January 10, police say two women wearing scrubs targeted victims at several Bank of America locations in Carlsbad.The suspects reportedly asked victims in parking lots to cash checks for nearly ,000 promising to pay the victims for their help.After several days, the victims found out that the checks were returned as fraudulent.Investigators have determined that the total estimated loss was ,000.Anyone with information is asked to call the Carlsbad Police Department's Financial Crimes Unit at 760-931-2173 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. Crime Stoppers is offering up to a ,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to an arrest.  837

(KGTV) - A North County 7th grade teacher is the SDCCU Classroom Hero for the month of June.This social studies instructor has a knack for engaging students by asking them to step into the shoes of those they're learning about."Now, when we look at America, it's a little different here right?" Joe Heath queries his social studies class at Aviara Oaks Middle School in Carlsbad.Heath has been teaching for more than 30 years, and this day has his 7th graders focused on pre-20th century Japanese culture."Most of the marriages were actually arranged," Heath explains to one student. "Your Mom or your Dad choosing your spouse. How would you feel about that?" For Coach Heath, as his students like to call him, Social Studies is about connecting and empathizing with people who lived through a different time and culture - not simply memorizing abstract names and dates. "I don't take that approach." said Heath, "In large part because I don't remember those names or those dates. I'm really good with remembering concepts and how people dealt with difficulties historically....and those same difficulties we face today.""It's not just absorbing facts where you write it down and then say it later," said student Rylan Hoffius. "It's actually talking about it and understanding the deeper meanings of it." Coach Heath's lectures are like conversations as he prompts his students to take part. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - The sister of an Orange County teenager whose pleas for help on Interstate 5 prompted 911 calls is explaining the family’s efforts to take the girl to rehab. California Highway Patrol officials said other drivers reported seeing the girl with her hands and feet tied Monday about 7 p.m. Officers pulled over the Toyota Corolla at south I-5 and Cannon Road in Carlsbad and found the girl restrained with tape over her mouth. The girl’s father told the CHP he and his 21-year-old daughter were driving the girl to a drug rehab facility in Mexico. The sister told 10News the girl was bound because her family didn’t want her to escape. RELATED: Teen bound and gagged in car leads to 911 callsThe 17-year-old girl has been doing meth for the past year, dropped out of high school, and was trading sex for drugs, the sister said. The family was concerned the girl would end up dead. The sister also told 10News the teen wasn’t accepted into rehab in Orange County because she had escaped in the past. The family visited the clinic in Tijuana earlier this month to determine it was safe, the sister said. CHP public information officer Kevin Smale said the father and sister were arrested Monday but the district attorney’s office chose not to book them on kidnapping charges.
