HONG KONG, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region held Friday a grand funeral ceremony to say goodbye to well-known businessman Tsui Tsin-tong, who was also a noted social activist, philanthropist and a close friend to the Communist Party of China.Tsui was also a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee before he died of an illness on April 2 this year in the Chinese capital of Beijing at the age of 69.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, the country's top advisory body, and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping had both sent messages of condolences to Tsui's family after Tsui's death.In their messages of condolences, Jia and Xi praised Tsui for his great contributions to Hong Kong's stable transition, smooth handover from Britain to China and Hong Kong's lasting prosperity, as well as Tsui's contributions to Chinese mainland's reform-and- opening-up drive and modernization.Tsui's funeral ceremony was held at Hong Kong's landmark Convention and Exhibition Center in the day. BRASILIA, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and the leaders of Brazil, Russia and India met in Brasilia on Thursday to discuss the world economic and financial situation and other important global issues.This was the second time the four leaders met formally for a summit.The first summit of Brazil, Russia, India and China, collectively known under their acronym BRIC, convened in Yekaterinburg, Russia, last year.At the Brasilia summit, leaders of the four countries were to exchange views on major global issues, such as the world economy and financial situation, reform of the international financial system, climate change and cooperation among the four countries, Chinese diplomats said.China hopes the summit participants could discuss global issues in the spirit of mutual benefit, so as to facilitate the recovery of the world economy, safeguard the four nations' common interests and advance their cooperation, Qin Gang, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, said at a regular press briefing on April 1.He said that China always adopted a "positive, pragmatic, open and transparent" attitude toward cooperation with other BRIC nations.Closer cooperation and exchanges among the four nations would be conducive to increasing the influence of emerging and developing countries, and promoting the development of multilateralism, he said.As major emerging markets, the BRIC countries account for 42 percent of the world's population and 15 percent of the world's GDP. BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Major indices of China's large ports mostly pointed to better performance in April with increasing cargo throughput and exports volume, the Ministry of Transport said Wednesday.According to latest figures posted on the ministry's website, China's large sea ports and river ports saw rapid throughput growth in cargo, exported goods volume and containers from January to April.Passenger throughput via large ports, however, fell 18.5 percent from a year earlier to 295 million in the first four months of 2010, the ministry said.Large ports are classified in China as sea ports with an annual cargo throughput above 15 million tonnes and river ports with an annual cargo throughput above 10 million tonnes.From January to April, cargo throughput in those large ports jumped 20.2 percent year on year to about 2.48 billion tonnes, the ministry said.About 206.5 million tonnes of goods were exported via the large ports during the January-April period, up 27.2 percent from a year ago.Container throughput rose 22.4 percent year on year to 436.81 million TEUs in the first four months, according to the ministry.
