A total of 61 trading partners had taken 160 trade protectionist measures against the world's third-largest economy between November 2008 and January 2010, Further 111 protectionist measures are in the pipeline.But China organized buying sprees to Europe and the United States amid the financial crisis, quite a stark contrast to the rising trade protectionism.Furthermore, China posted 7.24 billion U.S. dollars of trade deficit in March, the first monthly deficit in six years, the General Administration of Customs said Saturday.Long Yongtu, BFA's secretary-general, told Xinhua that the post-crisis period needed more unity and cooperation, but trade protectionism damaged the basis for unity and sent a wrong signal.Victor Fung, Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce, said that if the countries resort to protectionism, the economic recovery, already weak due to relatively high unemployment, would be further left in peril.The Group of 20 would continue to stay vigilant against trade protectionism as the global economy faced uncertainties on the road to recovery with high unemployment rate this year, according to a WTO report released in early March.Fung said most importantly nation leaders should be told not to abuse protectionism and to avoid trade frictions."The global economy would record solid recovery if no more protectionist measures were taken in the coming 12 months," he said.The promotion of Doha round of trade talks, stalled for years over differences in agricultural and services sectors, was an effective tool to curb all kinds of protectionism, Fung said."Free trade is very important to global economic recovery," said Yi. He added that the Doha round, if completed, would help create a large number of jobs and guarantee global economic recovery.Goh Chok Tong, Senior Minister and former Prime Minister of Singapore,also called to guard against trade protectionism under the green and environmental protection labels.The developed countries should help developing countries to upgrade technology rather than abusing protectionism, Goh said."We should work together to resist all kinds of trade protectionism, otherwise there will be no economic recovery and growth," Yi said.The three-day conference, under the theme of "Green Recovery: Asia's Realistic Choice for Sustainable Growth," will conclude on Sunday.The forum is committed to promoting regional economic integration and bringing Asian countries even closer to their development goals. WUHAN, March 26 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday started building a canal from the middle section of the Yangtze River to a tributary that connects with China's South-North Water Diversion project.Costing more than six billion yuan (880 million U.S. dollars), the 67.23 km project will divert 3.1 billion cubic meters of water every year from Yangtze's Jingjiang section to the Hanjiang River, one of the major sources of water for north China once the diversion project is complete.China's South-North Water Diversion project is designed to divert water from the water-rich south to the dry north.The central part of the project will divert water from Danjiangkou Reservoir on the Hanjiang River to north China cities like Beijing and Tianjin.According to research by Hubei provincial environmental protection bureau, without water from the canal the Hanjiang River would only have one third of its average runoff once water is diverted, and the water level of middle and lower reaches of Hanjiang would drop by 0.5 meter.The canal, which will be completed in 2014, will prevent problems arising such as algae pollution if water levels were decreased dramatically, said Shen Xiaoli, an engineer with the Hubei Environmental Sciences Institute.The canal is expected to benefit about 8.9 million people and 43,000 hectares of farmland in the lower reaches of Hanjiang.Once completed the five to six meters deep canal could be used by ships weighing more than 1,000 tonnes, facilitating transportation of coal from the north to the south, said Xu Shaojun, head of the Hubei Provincial Investigation and Design Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower.

BEIJING, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Residential land prices in 35 major Chinese cities grew 8.63 percent on average in 2009, a Ministry of Land and Resources report published Friday said.Land prices for commercial buildings grew at a slower rate, 5.54 percent, while industrial land prices rose 2.04 percent.The report's release comes after land plots in major Chinese cities sold for record prices at auction, adding to concern that increased land prices have driven up housing prices.The ministry said in March residential property prices rose an average 25.1 percent from a year ago to 4,474 yuan (655.6 U.S. dollars) per square meter nationwide last year.The report also said land sales climbed 63.4 percent from a year earlier to 1.59 trillion yuan in 2009.Land supply for construction increased 44.2 percent year on year to 319,000 hectares in 2009 as the government accelerated infrastructure and property construction to boost domestic demand and ensure economic growth, the report said.
