Every year around this time, Marta Valenzuela Moreno puts together an altar to remember family members who have passed.“I have here to present my traditional family altar of Day of the Dead,” Valenzuela Moreno said.It’s part of her tradition for el Día de los Muertos. In English, Day of the Dead.Day of the Dead is recognized on November 2. Ann Macca runs the Day of the Dead program in her community.“El Día de los Muertos is an ancient holiday," Macca said. "It comes from Aztec traditions where way back hundreds of years ago, they would celebrate for a whole month in the summer, and they would honor their deceased loved ones. And when the Catholic church showed up in Mexico, they brought with them all their holidays and traditions. And so when the Catholic church met the Aztec traditions, they came together and Day of the Dead was born.”Families of Mexican and Guatemalan descent create an altar for their ancestors. They thoughtfully arrange photos of their loved ones who have passed and surrounding the photos, they place their relative’s favorite foods, along with other items that honor what they loved and did while on Earth.Even though they happen around the same time, el Día de los Muertos should not be confused with Halloween.“Day of the Dead is a celebration of joy and welcoming where Halloween -- all of those skeletons, ghosts and ghouls -- those are spirits that you want to scare away," Macca said. "So, Halloween those are scary things, but in Day of the Dead, they’re your friends and your family and you want to see them and bring them back.”“I can talk to them, sing to them and argue with them,” Valenzuela Moreno said.Valenzuela Moreno says she feels a full range of emotions as she spends time with her mother, brothers and sisters who have passed.“Sadness, happiness, rejoice... there are times to pray, to cry, because memories come back of all of them.”Memories we have of relatives and the passion that emerges from them are things we all have in common. Macca says that’s likely the reason why the holiday has now entered mainstream culture.“I think a lot of people who don’t come from a latinx tradition who don’t have Mexican or Guatemalan heritage are now starting to embrace day of the dead because it’s such a wonderful way to remember your loved ones,” Macca said.Valenzuela Moreno says she welcomes any and all cultures to adopt the tradition she holds near and dear to her heart.“The community needs to embrace this kind of celebration and feel part of it. And not be ashamed or scared.”Valenzuela Moreno says she hopes future generations in her family will continue building an altar every year on Día de los Muertos, so she too can visit when her time comes to fly away. 2728

FALLBROOK (CNS) - The San Diego County Sheriff's Department Saturday released the name of the man who was shot after he allegedly attacked a deputy with a baseball bat early Friday morning.The Sheriff's Department says a deputy was investigating reports of unprovoked assaults with a bat when he found himself under the same kind of attack from 30-year-old Jesus Cirilo Rodriguez.The deputy was sitting in an unmarked car around 4:30 a.m. Friday in the area of Reche and Ranger roads in Fallbrook when the attack happened, sheriff's Lt. Rich Williams said. Deputies had received three reports of unprovoked baseball bat attacks near the area in the last two days -- one on Wednesday evening and two on Thursday evening -- and were conducting surveillance, Williams said.RELATED: Bat-wielding man shot by sheriff's deputyDuring the surveillance, a man -- suspected to be Rodriguez -- walked up and smashed the window of the deputy's vehicle, shattering glass over the interior and prompting the deputy to open fire in self-defense, Williams said.The deputy shot the suspect multiple times, though the suspect was expected to survive.Rodriguez was being held under guard at a local hospital on suspicion of assault of a peace officer with a deadly weapon while his wounds were being treated, and his bail was set at 0,000. ERIE, Colo. — A woman says the man she met online and dated for a month-and-a-half robbed her of thousands of dollars worth of valuables, tried to pawn them for cash, and then disappeared. Police have now issued a warrant for his arrest.“I let him into my world completely and I was completely betrayed,” Michelle Cohagan said.She met Joshua Law on the site Plenty of Fish. They dated for a few weeks and became close, with Law spending a lot of time at her Erie home. One night, Cohagan noticed that two of her digital cameras and her roommate’s GoPro camera went missing. A few days later, Law disappeared.“I haven’t seen or heard from him,” she said.Law originally told her he had plans to close on a house nearby. Then he claimed he had to fly across the country for a family emergency. The realtor of the home was the one to tell Cohagan that Law wasn’t actually buying the home. That’s when she noticed even more things were gone.“My grandmother’s wedding ring, a mother’s ring, pearls my father had given me,” she said.“She had about ,500 worth of items between her and her roommate that had been stolen,” Erie Police Department Commander Michael Haefele said.Now Erie PD are involved. They’ve been able to track Law and the missing items to multiple local pawn shops.“We were able to get a signed arrest warrant for the suspect in the case,” Haefele said.“He had been taking and pawning my things since pretty much two weeks in,” Cohagan added. “I think he’s a sociopath. I think he’s a con artist.”She said that she’s spoken to at least two other women who say they dated Law. The stories of falling in love and being ripped off were similar.Police do not know where Law is at the moment. The warrant for his arrest is out, and local towns and law enforcement agencies are aware. Meanwhile, they have been able to locate some of Cohagan’s things including her cameras, expensive purses, and a watch.
