SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of men in high heels strutted through downtown San Diego on Saturday morning to support victims of domestic violence. The 11th annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event started with the mile walk and ended with a family festival featuring face painting, live music and more.“It is a lighthearted way to bring awareness to domestic violence,” said Heather Frinlay, the Chief Operating Officer of the YWCA of San Diego County. The morning of family fun raised money for programs that provide victims of domestic violence resources like housing, counseling, and legal aid.“This is not a private issue; this is a community issue,” said Frinlay. “We still have one in four women, and now one in seven men experiencing domestic violence in their lifetimes.”San Diego County reported more than 17,000 incidents of domestic violence in 2017. 871

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Despite criticism, a spokesperson for the California Republican Party told ABC 10News on Tuesday that the party will continue placing unofficial ballot drop boxes around communities. They've popped up in Orange, Los Angeles, and Fresno counties, but so far none have been reported in San Diego. Several have been labeled "official", as confirmed by CA GOP spokesperson Hector Barajas. “We could've had better wording on the ballot boxes and so we changed some of the wording around already on the ballot boxes but the important thing to remember is that these ballot boxes are inside our campaign headquarters or inside of businesses or other organizations. It's not as though they're outside in front of a mailbox or outside a library or a secondhand store or another place of business,” he told ABC 10News.On Monday, California's Secretary of State and the State Attorney General sent a cease and desist to the GOP, calling the boxes illegal. Some argue that the boxes are deceptive and could lead to tampering. “These boxes are not the same as county election drop boxes that are required to meet state security standards,” said California Secretary of State Alex Padilla.Barajas told ABC 10News, “What is happening right now is the Secretary of State -- with this cease and desist -- is basically looking to engage in voter suppression [by] eliminating more options for individuals to be able to drop off their ballot.”Barajas said that "ballot harvesting" is a practice that allows a third party to collect voters' completed ballots and was legalized four years ago in a bill authored by San Diego Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez.A tweet Tuesday from one of Gonzalez’s accounts reads, "Apparently, Republicans in our legislature think that when I wrote that a voter could designate a 'person' to turn in their ballot, they thought I meant a fraudulently labeled box. I'm terribly sorry. I will define person next time.”When asked how many boxes the GOP has placed around the state, Barajas responded, “We're not giving an exact number but we will say that we've got them statewide and with the amount of press we've gotten on this we're considering maybe even doubling or tripling our efforts.”The San Diego County Registrar of Voters reports it has already received 175,000 completed ballots. A spokesperson said Tuesday that any reports of unofficial ballot boxes would be referred to the Secretary of State. 2440

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters were able to extinguish a brush fire they believe was sparked by an unknown group in City Heights Wednesday. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, the blaze started in a canyon on the 3200 block of 42nd Street around 1:30 p.m.Crews were quickly able to stop the fire’s forward rate of spread while firefighters remained on scene to ensure there were no hot spots. No one was injured and no structures damaged, but the blaze did scorch an acre of land. Video sent to 10News shows residents in the area spraying water throughout their yards as flames crept up the nearby canyon. The metro arson strike team ruled the fire arson after witnesses said "juveniles were seen in the canyon before the fire started." 746

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For some people who catch the coronavirus, their symptoms can last for months. Researchers are calling these patients who now test negative but still experience symptoms "long haulers." Doctors are calling the long hauler problem a big mystery. It's a new phenomenon of a new virus, stumping even the brightest researchers and doctors."I have to tell him, I don't know," Dr. Zehui Tan with Sharp Rees Stealy Rancho Bernardo said.Dr. Tan is treating an otherwise very healthy 24-year-old man who tested positive for COVID-19 in September. She says after he quarantined for 14 days, most of his symptoms went away. He retook the test, and it came back negative. But the good news was short-lived. A month later, he ended up in the ER once again."His blood test is normal, chest is fine, but they found an abnormality in the EKG -- an inflammation of the heart. It can be a complication after COVID," Dr. Tan said.Researchers believe about 10% of COVID-19 patients see a relapse in symptoms. These "long haulers" now test negative for COVID but still experience symptoms that include coughing, fatigue, body aches, shortness of breath, loss of taste and smell, and brain fog."Almost three months after the COVID infection, he's still not feeling right," Dr. Tan said.Researchers say there does not seem to be a consistent reason or type of patient who becomes long-haulers."We see people die long from COVID, and I have a 92-year-old just fully recovered, so you just never know what's going to happen in your body once you get this COVID," Dr. Tan said.So it could be a long road ahead until her patient feels like himself again."We don't know," Dr. Tan said. "The only thing we can give is offer lots of support, treat them symptomatically, and then just watch and wait."Experts say patients who had bad respiratory issues may develop permanent lung damage. However, those who lost their sense of taste and smell will likely get those senses back. 1973

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Heavy rain over the last few years has brought an unexpected splash of color to portions of San Diego. For the last month or so, Rainbow Eucalyptus trees have been shedding their bark, revealing a multi-colored trunk."It's outstanding," says Peter Fritsch, who walks by a handful of the trees along Sports Arena Boulevard. "I love the contrast between the gold and the red and the gray and sometimes blue."RELATED: Interactive map: Exploring San Diego's history, culture through street artHorticulture experts say the colors are more pronounced in tropical climates, but here in San Diego, you can still see a rainbow on the trees."As it ages, the stuff that doesn't look as colorful, has been oxidized somewhat, it peels off," says Bradley Brown, a Master Arborist with Tree Life Consulting. "Over time, the new bark will have those varying shades of color."According to the city, there are Rainbow Eucalyptus trees in Balboa Park, Sports Arena, the San Diego Zoo and parts of Mission Bay. There's no official count for how many exist in the city.Still, right now, they're easy to spot.RELATED: Mission Hills home transformed into whimsical topiary garden"It's amazing watching all the bark peel off and seeing the rainbow come alive in them," says Jason Sandoval, who owns a gas station that has several of the trees nearby.Eucalyptus trees have a rough reputation across San Diego. They grow fast and have a tendency to fall over in high wind and rain events. But Brown says they can be safe if they're well maintained. He'd like to see more planted throughout the city."It's something we should embrace. It's kind of San Diego's tree," he says. "You see pictures of LA and they have palm trees. Ours is the Eycalyptus. It's those Dr. Seuss forms along the freeway that's something we should embrace." 1829
