Tattoos have been around for thousands of years, primarily as an artform. But what if they had a purpose, beyond just aesthetics? “I think that we can upgrade tattoo inks to give people new abilities,” says Carson Bruns, a mechanical engineer professor at the University of Colorado. Bruns is also a tattoo aficionado. "I got my first tattoo when I was 19 years old, and I’ve been addicted to tattoos ever since," Bruns says.He spends his days in a lab, working to bring an ancient artform into the 21st Century. "My idea is that, by adding new function, new properties to the tattoo inks, that tattoos could potentially be used for more than just art," he says. Bruns is focused on a specific type of tattoo ink, one that would embed tiny microcapsules filled with certain material underneath the skin. One of his most promising developments would fill those capsules with UV dye. It’d essentially be a tattoo that tells you when you need to apply sunscreen. "So our tattoo, anytime you can see it, anytime it's visible to you, that's a sign your skin is dangerously exposed to UV light and its increasing your risk to skin cancer,” Bruns explains. Other types of inks would be heat-sensitive, like the squares he's tested on his own skin. Those would only appear when your body reached a certain temperature. "A tattooable thermometer, made of these heat sensitive tattoo inks could be a way to make it more accessible for people to read their body temp and check up on their own health," he says. Bruns says the possibilities are endless. "I like to joke tattoos can give you superpowers,” he says. “They can give our skin new properties we don't currently have."Bruns hopes that one day, we might even be able to come up with tattoo inks that could conduct electricity or even tell us our blood sugar or blood alcohol levels. 1843

A former business manager for late Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee was arrested Saturday in Arizona on charges including elder abuse, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.Keya Morgan faces felony charges of false imprisonment and grand theft from an elder and a misdemeanor charge of elder abuse, police said in a news release.A warrant had been issued for Morgan's arrest earlier this month following an elder abuse estate investigation that began in March 2018.Bail has been set at 0,000 and Morgan is expected to be extradicted to Los Angeles, police said.CNN has reached out to an attorney for Morgan.Among other things, Morgan is accused of collecting money from business transactions -- like autograph signing sessions in May 2018 that totaled more than 2,000 -- and not transferring the money to Lee.Lee died in November 2018 at age 95.His estate was worth more than million, but no one had clear authority to act on Lee's behalf, police said."Morgan exerted his control and influence over Lee," police said in the news release.Morgan also is accused of falsely imprisoning Lee when he took Lee from his Hollywood Hills home to what police described as a "secured Beverly Hills condominium" in the late night hours in June 2018.Police said Lee was "removed from Morgan's control" later that month when he was arrested by LAPD for making fake 911 calls in May 2018. A federal judge on Monday dismissed a lawsuit brought by President Donald Trump in his effort to block a subpoena issued by the Manhattan district attorney's office for eight years of Trump's tax returns, rejecting the President's "extraordinary" claim that any occupant of the White House enjoys "absolute immunity from criminal process of any kind."Describing Trump's argument as a "categorical and limitless assertion of Presidential immunity," US District Court Judge Victor Marrero wrote in an opinion that it "would constitute an overreach of executive power."Lawyers for Trump have indicated they would appeal the ruling.In September, after the lawsuit was filed, the district attorney's office agreed not to enforce the subpoena for a period of time that was set to expire Monday at 1 p.m. ET.The Manhattan District Attorney's Office, led by Cyrus Vance Jr., is examining hush money paid to two women who, during the 2016 presidential campaign, alleged having affairs with Trump a decade ago. Researchers are trying to find out as much as they can about great white sharks.After a couple of attacks involving people last year, there are new efforts to learn more about these animals. It’s moments like the incident at Nauset Beach South that shark experts are studying more closely. Video taken of the beach shows white sharks feeding on seals close to the shore. Now, researchers are launching new studies, including one looking at the feeding habits and behaviors of these sharks. “We're essentially going to be giving iPhones to white sharks to track their activity in three dimensions at a really fine scale,” explains Megan Winton, a research scientist with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. Winton and other researchers will be tagging sharks with devices similar to what's in smartphones. “We'll be able to identify how often they're feeding on seals. We'll be able to look for relationships with feeding activity and environmental conditions,” Winton says. The data would be given to officials to use to provide better warnings on beaches. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is currently pouring over data on a population study they just finished. “Based on the video footage, we were able to identify every shark we saw to an individual level,” Winton says. So far, the researchers have identified more than 300 white sharks. Winton calls it a conservation success story, thanks to protections put in place over the last few decades. “So one thing I like to remind people is that these are large, amazing animals and they're very capable predators and they're certainly deserving of our respect,” Winton says. “But they're not monsters out there, lurking our coastline menacing our beaches. They're big fish out there eating their natural prey item.” White sharks are the only natural predator to seals in the Cape Cod area, which some residents and fisherman see as a nuisance.Researchers want to see how many seals the sharks are eating and if they can impact the seal population. 2023
