(KGTV) - Having healthy kids is important. But how do you know what kind of physical, social or emotional development your child may need? Here are some tips from some of our local experts. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BASICS OF CHILDHOOD WE CAN EASILY TAKE CARE OF?* Making sure your child is up to date with medical and dental check-ups; including immunizations.* Focusing on some issues you need to control and be firm about. Making sure there is no argument around safety issues like putting them in a car seat, using bike helmets or playing near traffic.* Create routines and keep them; set limits. This will in turn make your child feel secure and safe. HOW CAN WE RAISE STRONG AND INDEPENDENT KIDS?* Assign simple tasks such as feeding pets or putting toys away.* Allow your child to participate in decision making – let them pick out which vegetables to have for dinner; don’t give open ended. * Encourage independence in bathing and dressing; brushing their teeth or choosing to what shirt to wear or even learning to put their shoes on.* Give children their space to be creative, choosing activities and fail with support. HOW DOES THE YMCA HELP BUILD SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SKILLS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD?* 90% of brain development happens in first 5 years of life.* Children learn through play. Our programs support parents and early childhood educators.* Understand what is developmentally appropriate at various stages. Each child develops at different rate but know the stages of a 3-year old versus a 5-year old.* Set realistic expectations; remember they are still learning.* Spend quality one-on-one time with children by reading or playing games. (KGTV) - A group of San Diego lawmakers, water agencies and business leaders are joining forces in opposition of a possible new state tax on tap water.Under the proposed State Senate Bill 623, Californians would see an additional 95 cents per month on their water bills.SB623 is one of two articles of legislation being discussed by state lawmakers that could see residents’ water bills go up by more than per month. The goal of the tax would be to clean polluted groundwater around the state, particularly agricultural areas where water is considered undrinkable -- with arsenic, lead and nitrate levels that have been compared to Flint, Michigan’s crisis.State Sen. Bill Monning (D-Carmel), who authored the bill, said SB623 "will establish the Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund to provide an ongoing source of funding to finance water improvement projects throughout California. The USGS map below show various water sites around California. Click on the map for more information on the sites. Approximately 300 water systems in California currently have pollutant violations, such as arsenic, lead, nitrates, and uranium that have been linked to nausea and vomiting, cancer, reduced mental functioning in children, nervous system decline, miscarriages, and numerous other health issues.Support of the fund will come from a fertilizer mill fee, a fee on dairies, and a fee assessed on water bills of no more than a month per household, and is anticipated to generate 0 million a year. Low-income rate exemptions are provided for households under 200% of the federal poverty level."The State Water Resources Control Board created a map of water pollutant assessments throughout the state. Click on the map below for more data. Numerous agricultural groups and environmental organizations have come out in support of SB623, but many, including the San Diego County Taxpayers Association and other local groups, have said the bill is “counterproductive because it will make it harder for low-income residents to afford this necessity. A precedent-setting tax also could lead to additional taxes on water for a variety of project and programs.” 2175
(CNN) -- It takes four hands to open this new condom, created by an Argentine company in a bid to highlight the importance of consent. The "Consent Pack" of condoms was designed by ad agency BBDO Argentina for Tulipan, a company which sells adult toys and condoms."If it's not a yes, it's a no," and "Without consent there is no pleasure" says the tagline in the promotional video, along with the hashtag #PlacerConsentido, or "permitted pleasure."Another tagline reads: "Consent is the most important thing in sex."The pack's "unique system" requires four hands -- or two people -- to agree to open it, by clicking four buttons on the top and sides of the box at the same time.Executive creative directors of BBDO Argentina, Joaquin Campins and Christian Rosli, said in a statement to CNN: "Tulipan has always spoken of safe pleasure, but for this campaign we understood that we had to talk about the most important thing in every sexual relationship: pleasure is possible only if you both give your consent first."The condom is limited edition for now and being given to bar customers and attendees of events around Buenos Aires. But Tulipan plans to sell it online in the future. The pack comes after a survey of 30,000 people conducted by AHF Argentina, which campaigns for HIV treatment and services, revealed that 20.5% of Argentine men never use protection, 65% occasionally use condoms and only 14.5% regularly use them. 1434
