BEIJING, March 6 (Xinhua) -- China aims to "basically eradicate poverty" by 2020 while greatly raise its poverty line, in order to help more people in need, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Sunday. The State Council is drafting a new ten-year poverty-reduction plan (2011-2020), in which the current poverty line of 1,196 yuan per year (about 0.5 U.S. dollars a day) will be greatly raised, Wen told a panel meeting of the ongoing session of the National People's Congress (NPC).The nation will intensify its poverty alleviation efforts through aids and development, focusing on large areas of destitute population, he said to a group of NPC deputies from Gansu, one of the poorest regions in China.According to the United Nations' standard of one dollar per person each day, China still has 150 million people under the poverty line.Wen said lack of water was the bottleneck for Gansu's social-economic development, urging the province to expand the use of water conservancy technology.Wen also urged the province to coordinate economic development with environmental protection, and reverse environmental degradation in Dunhuang, a historical city with world cultural heritage threatened by decertification.

LOS ANGELES, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Kids born in the spring and summer months might be more likely to develop celiac disease, U.S. researchers have found.Researchers from the Massachusetts General Hospital for Children drew the conclusion after examining data on 382 children diagnosed with celiac disease at between 11 months and 19 years of age, HealthDay News reported on Sunday. The study found that in the 15- to 19-year-old set, birth season appeared to make no difference, but among 317 children younger than 15 years of age, 57 percent were born in the "light" season of March through August, compared with 43 percent who were born in the "dark" season of September through February. The findings suggest that the higher incidence of this autoimmune disease may be related to a combination of seasonal and environmental factors, the report said.Celiac disease is a digestive disorder triggered by consuming the protein gluten, which is primarily found in bread and other foods containing wheat, barley or rye. It can damage the small intestine and make it difficult to absorb certain nutrients, causing problems ranging from abdominal pain to nerve damage.Even though the exact cause of celiac disease is unknown, potential triggers include the timing of infants' introduction to gluten, and viral infections contracted during the first year of life. The study's findings suggest the season of a child's birth is another potential risk factor for the disease. The researchers pointed out that infants are generally introduced to solid foods containing gluten at around six months of age, which for spring and summer babies would coincide with cold and flu season.Based on the findings, the age at which gluten is first offered to some babies may need to be altered, said the study's lead researcher, Dr. Pornthep Tanpowpong. "If you're born in the spring or the summer, it might not be appropriate to introduce gluten at the same point as someone born in the fall or winter," said Tanpowpong. "Although we need to further develop and test our hypothesis, we think it provides a helpful clue for ongoing efforts to prevent celiac disease."The study also noted that exposure to sunlight may also play a role in celiac disease, since vitamin D deficiency has been associated with the disease. The study was presented Sunday in Chicago during Digestive Disease Week, an international gathering sponsored by the American Gastroenterological Association and other organizations, HealthDay News said.Because the study was presented at a medical meeting and is small, its findings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal and confirmed in other research, the report said.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Officials from China and the United States on Thursday signed a new agreement to support panda breeding, research and conservation efforts by the two countries, an exciting news for numerous American fans of the cute animals.Zang Chunlin, Secretary General of the China Wildlife Conservation Association, and Dennis Kelly, Director of the U.S. Smithsonian's National Zoo, signed the Giant Panda Cooperative Research and Breeding Agreement.Under the agreement, a pair of giant pandas, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, will remain at the National Zoo in Washington D.C. for five more years. Also in attendance at the signing ceremony at the National Zoo was Chen Naiqing, wife of China's Ambassador to the U.S. Zhang Yesui, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Mary Kaye Huntsman, wife of U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman. On behalf of the Chinese embassy and Ambassador Zhang, Chen expressed appreciation to the National Zoo for taking care of these giant pandas and to all American people for their love for them."Although the weather is cold today, the friendship between our people keeps us warm," she said. "I am confident that through joint efforts, our cooperation will grow, our friendship will deepen, and the future will be even brighter."The first two years of the new agreement, effective immediately through Dec. 5, 2015, include a cooperative study involving reproductive experts from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong and the Smithsonian's Conservation Biology Institute to oversee the breeding of Mei Xiang and Tian Tian."I am proud that this agreement not only ensures that visitors to the zoo will continue to be able to visit and learn about these beautiful animals, but also provides a strong platform for improving the conservation of wild pandas and their habitat in China," said Salazar. He said those giant pandas have "long symbolized the close partnership the United States has with China as we work together to conserve and recover one of the world's most endangered species in the wild."Mei Xiang and Tian Tian have lived at the Smithsonian's National Zoo since Dec. 6, 2000. Both pandas were born in Wolong, China and had parents that were wild born. SAN FRANCISCO, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft Corp. on Monday said it will buy Internet communications company Skype for 8.5 billion U.S. dollars in cash, a bold move for the software giant to explore new business opportunities."Skype is a phenomenal service that is loved by millions of people around the world," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a statement."Together we will create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world," he added.Microsoft said it has agreed to buy Skype from the investor group led by Silver Lake, and the deal has been approved by the boards of directors of both companies.Skype will become a new business division within Microsoft, and Skype CEO Tony Bates will assume the title of president of the Microsoft Skype Division, reporting directly to Ballmer. The Skype deal ranks one of the biggest purchase in the 36-year history of Microsoft, which is struggling to compete in the fields of Internet and mobile phones beyond its dominance on personal computer software market.Founded in 2003 and based in Luxembourg, Skype offers a software application that allows users to make free or cheap phone calls and chats over the Internet with additional features including instant messaging and video conferencing.Numbers showed that Skype's 170 million connected users made over 207 billion minutes of voice and video conversations in 2010.Skype was acquired by eBay in September 2005, and then acquired by an investment group led by Silver Lake in November 2009.In a press release announcing the acquisition, Microsoft noted that the deal will increase the accessibility of real-time video and voice communications, generating significant new business and revenue opportunities, and enhancing its existing offerings of real-time communications products and services.Microsoft said Skype will support its devices like Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and a wide array of Windows devices, and it will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms. The acquisition is expected to obtain all required regulatory clearances within this calendar year, Microsoft said.

BOSTON, the United States, April 9 (Xinhua) -- China's clean energy market offers huge business opportunities, experts said at the Harvard China Forum here Saturday. In a panel discussion on clean energy, experts who have been keeping a close eye on China's renewable sectors evaluated its market size, development level and current challenges."No matter it comes to wind, solar or any other type of clean energy, the market capability in China is enormous," Peter Evans, GE Energy's global strategy and planning director said.Evans said he believed China has the need to develop all kinds of energy in order to meet its ever-growing appetite for energy, especially against the background of high oil price, which just surged to nearly 113 U.S. dollars a barrel. He also said China now has the capital needed to develop clean energy but lacked the technology, although that would not be a problem since "every abroad company related to clean energy wants to go to China and to grab something."Gong Li, chairman of Accenture Greater China, said that for a better development of China's renewable sectors, sustainable policy support is needed. On current challenges, Li said one big problem is the lack of network to turn clean energy into electricity. "Renewable energy such as solar and wind is intermediate energy that needs to be transmitted to the power grid, or else it will be garbage energy," Li said.
